The main customers for SP were “Pan Am, Iran Air” and later Saudia. Pan Am and Iran Air ordered this aircraft to be specially made for one reason only, Tehran to JFK direct flights. Yes, you read that right. Before the revolution in Iran, the two countries were super friendly.

Thinking of photoshops, the thumbnail of this video looked like a 747-SP with winglets and -400-style engines. A 747-SP upgraded with -400 tech. This was something Boeing actually considered, calling it the ASB - Advanced Short Body - but never built. Instead they made the 777. The 747-SP was actually regarded as a moderate success by Boeing even though they didn't sell very many, because the development costs were pretty minimal. They'd considered building a trijet version of the 747 - would have looked like an L1011 with 747-SP fuselage, but feared the market wouldn't be big enough to support the much higher development costs. History tells us this was a good move, as the widebody trijet market was barely big enough to support one entrant, the DC-10/MD-11, the L1011 didn't do well at all. Boeing was always good at knowing what the market would and wouldn't want, and I'm not aware of them ever building anything that didn't sell enough to offset the development costs. Some things didn't sell well, but they were versions of existing more popular models that didn't require a ton of development work, thus still paying off. They also made great products - until they bought McDonnell Douglas, and their "cut costs and quality" mindset infected Boeing's management.

This is my favorite of the 747 line. Used to fly an old Pan Am 747SP on United between GMP-MNL back in the 90s. Business class upstairs was nice and roomy and the lavatory upstairs was huge.

It wasn’t made for the “Asian Market.” It was built so South African airlines would have a plane they could fly direct to Europe. B/c of Apartheid they couldn’t stop anywhere on the continent so they needed an extra long haul airplane. The 747SP was Boeing’s solution.
