Our latest project bike, now up for auction on ebay. We bought this bike at Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival in Leeds, AL in October. It was in questionable shape, and had a lot of enhancements done to it. We wanted to recover the bike's dignity while keeping that vintage drag bike feel.

I had a 74 for MANY years, had Akront wheels w stainless steel spokes, bored to 1015 CC, Megacycle 417 cams, 29 smooth bores, head ported, Manley SS oversized valves, head and cylinder decked at least .030, undercut trans. electronic ignition, etccccc Cams gave full power to just over 10 grand but had to wait until about 5500 to get the power, bike now is a toy compared to new bikes. I had a 2005 ZX 10 and that bike would walk on the old Z-1, I lowered mine too about an inch, fork tubes bottomed against the handle bars and rear I moved the shock mounts, also had the frame gusseted, lowering really improved the handling- in its day it was a fast and sharp looking machine.

I purchased a brand new Kawasaki Z1 900 back in the Spring of 1975 from Ricks Cycle Center in Bound Brook.NJ. It was the fastest and best Motor Cycle I owned to date. I don’t ride anymore. Back in 1975 I was 24 years old. Before then I owned a Triumph 650 Bonneville with the 750 kit on it and a couple of Honda’s before that. In 1975 you only had 2 choices of colors on the Z1 either Dark Blue or Dark Maroon. I chose the dark blue. I put a Black Yoshimura Header on it right away and what a bike. To this day when I speak about my old Z1 I tell people when they asked what it was like and I tell them that driving it and nailing the throttle it gave you the feeling like you were being shot out of a Canon it was so fast. What a rush and you better hold on because the factory seat they gave you back then in 1975 did not hold you in place.
@mikekennedy5470

If you thought it shot you outta a canon you need to try a 2007 zrx 1200.

@@mikekennedy5470 At 70 years old today I stay on 4 wheels these days happy to still drive one of my Muscle Cars. I could never handle today what I did back in the day on a Motorcycle during the Mid to late 60’s through the 70’s. I gave it all up in 1981. Too many nuts on the road. There wasn’t a day on the road where some nut almost took me out while driving my bike.

In regards to the header... if the head pipes are all equal length, it is probably a Bill Wirges made header. The gear in the megaphone is someone's afterthought. Bill was more famous for is expansion chambers. The collector design for that header was better suited for a lowered bike. It also compared well to a Kerker or Hooker. His dyno proved it...

The price initially asked for is an indication of how much they have gone up, obviously what you paid for it doesn't matter as the resurrection of these timeless classics outweighs that. But they are getting harder to find. There are many overseas buyers that go to the US so slowly opportunities will dry up sadly

I HOPE YOU CAN REPLY TO MY COMMENT. I’ve got a REALLY nice 75’ Z1b. I’d grade it an 8/10. Unfortunately not original paint, but nothing is missing. Besides that, it has a 4/1 header which is what I would want anyway. Would love to have your shop go thru the bike and sort out the few blemishes it has like a few slightly pitted chrome pieces, but still shiny bits and fasteners. Could you give me a wild guess how much it would cost to get it up to snuff.

We put a different body set on it that we had in stock. Our procedure for restoring the inside of a rusty tank is shown in our "Metal Rescue" demo: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fBQX5v4FmzI.html

@@Johnnysvintage Oh yes, I watched that video. I just don't see how you can keep the tank from rusting after using any rust remover if you don't line it (which has its own problems.) I've read that the tanks were (are?) plated with a lead/zinc/tin mixture at the factory. Too bad nobody can do that here.

Not knocking the meticulous detailed work that goes on in your shop by any means ! My question is why put those k&n air filters on ! Had a 78 Z1R the guy I bought it from had laid it down somehow the air box got busted ! So he put the k&n filters on it ! The guy said that the bike ran a lot better with the stock air box ! Stock jet like 1.07 and with the k&n filters was like 1.21s get the right air fuel mixture ! Not 100% on the numbers but close i think ,been 20 some years ago !
