Jetstar has announced a massive expansion in New Zealand, with enhanced domestic flights and new flights to Australian cities. Meanwhile, Qantas has announced plans to grow its turboprop fleet across QantasLink by adding 14 mid-life Q400s and retiring ageing Q200s and Q300s. Lastly, FedEx has retired 22 of its Boeing 757 Freighters to improve efficiency and move towards younger freight aircraft for its flying.

Just to clarify; Fedex is NOT retiring its 757 fleet. It is retiring 22 aircraft - a fifth of the fleet - after losing a contract. Fedex is also in the process of retiring its A300s (to be replaced by 767F) and MD-11F (with 777F). It will became an all Boeing operator.

Fedex bought some from Delta so what sense would it make for Delta to buy back planes that have been reconfigurated into cargo planes 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

What are they going to use on the Lord Howe Is service as only the Dash8-200 can operate into that airport?

@michaelhayden725 The Lord Howe Island Board is aware of this. It has looked at a 500m runway extension, a different operator (the ATR42 can also use the existing airport), and ceasing RPT. When I flew there in the 1980s, it was on a Super King Air. Accommodation is limited and may not justify the Q400 anyway. The airport receives only 8 or so airline flights a week.

@@davidcarter4247 thanks. I am aware of the limits on accommodation but had not heard about any runway extension. Not sure what the locals or greenies would say about any encroachment either into the lagoon beach area or into the ocean. Either way it will be a big issue. As for alternative aircraft I agree ATR42 or ATR72 can do the job, but again these are “old” aeroplanes. What is required is 40 seat modern turbo-prop aircraft, maybe something from Embraer?

@@michaelhayden725 All these issues were covered in a 2017 report commissioned by the Lord Howe Island Board because of the limited life of the -200s (assessed as 10 years in the report). The report merely set out the options without making recommendations. The runway is not only short, it is low strength and the Dash 8-200s operate under an exemption. The Q400 would struggle to meet that even with a longer runway. The taxiway might also be be too narrow as the Q400 needs 22m and the island is 18m. Skytrans is mentioned in the report as offering to operate ATR42s on the route. It has Dash 8-100s at present. I expect Qantaslink, for reasons of fleet compatibility, will quit the route (most likely) or contract it to another operator. The ATR42 is still in production so low time aircraft are available and the -600S will handle the runway easily . I understand the Saab 340 is OK for pavement strength but runway length is the issue. Embraer has nothing to offer.

The full fleet isnt being retired, just a contractor who operators 22 of them for FedEx

Will any of the new Q400s be based in WA, and especially Perth? All QantasLink Q400s are based in the Eastern States and rarely visit Perth when Network’s Fokker 100s and Airbus A319/A320s are undergoing maintenance, so it would be nice to see or fly on some of these aircraft on short-haul routes like Kalgoorlie, Busselton and Geraldton

Careful using carrier’s 757 fleet age of airframes alone to judge individual FedEx (& UPS) 757s, especially those originally built as 757PFs and not conversions from pax service.

fedex bastard 757 fleet are all converted from pax, ups 757 fleet is all production(factory) freighters, ups slowly reactivating a300s and 757s to fulfill the postal contract

ATRs have a more pleasant cabin, but they're slower. Fine for short routes (eg Canberra to Sydney). I know people in Queensland complained the ATR took an extra half-hour over Dash-8. I love the SAAB 340s Virgin has through Link Airways for this route. So much fun! Just wear hearing protection.

ATR are a terrible aircraft. They are slow ugly and have very underwhelming performance. They also have a serious icing problem. I sincerely hope that we don't see anymore back in Australia.

Fedex has only operated the 757s since 2008 so yea their retiring them pretty early on I'll say 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

Only a fifth of the fleet are being retired. The newest aircraft in the fleet was delivered to BA in 1998 so is 26 years old. One is over 40 years old, The Fedex 757F is likely to still be in service long after the A300Fs and MD11Fs are gone.

Jetstar is disliked in NZ. Right from the moment they launched they alienated NZ customers. The airline I love to hate. Because of mis-steps by Air New Zealand they should have an easy ride, but no, Jetstar made even more mis-steps . Definitely a sub brand

The Q200 was the only QantasLink aircraft that could operate to and from Lord Howe Island and even then it operated with reduced capacity. There is no scope to lengthen the Island's airstrip. What is the planned alternative?
