It's amazing when you look at what is out there in the world at how little that museums actually have. I never would have knew about these.

That Brunswick bag is pretty neat, at least to me, because the drug store (and city) mentioned on it is about 40 miles away from me. I may have even seen a couple of embossed drug store prescription bottles from that drug store as well.

what would you say counts as a "shopping bag"? i have a couple record sleeves(with one even including a receipt from 1974) that are from a (seemingly now defunct) "Kings of the music world" record store

My personal definition: 1. The purchased records (which would have already been in sleeves) went inside it to protect it on the ride home. 2. It was printed by the record company with record company information on it. There were a lot of bags (and sleeves) printed by the record stores (especially in England and Europe) with store information but no record company info. I didn't count those. 3. I just included early 78rpm stuff. I don't think I have any from after WWII. There were probably some made, but I haven't seen them.

Haven't seen a shopping bag advertising Baseball related records, but I'm pretty sure I know a guy who has a shopping bag from an "Authorized Paramount Dealer". I'll check with him next time we meet up for a swap, and see if I can't get a nice photo of it.

That would be AWESOME! I really enjoy the odds and ends from Paramount. I have managed a few needle packages and a couple of print ads from the Chicago Defender newspaper, but that is about it. i have never heard of a Paramount Dealer bag. My guess is that it would have to be from either Wisconsin, Chicago or KC?

@@MarkAtnip If I remember right, it was somewhere in Northern Michigan (maybe Traverse city?). I'm hoping to see him in a couple of months, I'll see if I can get a scan!

I believe that the only way to listen to music pre 1949 is only with 78rpm records... or vinyl records that has been mastered from the original acetate discs with absolutely no digital compression or multiple generations of transfers. CD's suck, digital audio-files are even worse, cassettes can be acceptable.

There are a lot of people that agree. (and of course, plenty who don't) I prefer to play 78's or recordings made from my 78's before I play anything that has been remastered or re-recorded. Remastering is both an art form and a way to completely anger about 50% of the listening audience. I prefer more treble in my reissues (meaning a bit more hiss) while others prefer the hiss taken out (often resulting in a more muffled sound). There are suggested processes but there is no "right" way to please the ear of anyone other than the person making the transfer or remaster.

@@MarkAtnip I generally prefer vinyl over shellac.

Light Ray is such an iconic sound, despite its Distortion, it makes the Hot Jazz sound hotter.

Very interesting! I only have one shopping bag by the Clangor Schallplatten GmbH from around 1931. Is the paper quality of the Challenge shopping bag as bad as their sleeves? In my experience the cheaper American labels (Banner, Challenge, etc.) mostly used very thin and brittle paper.

The paper is a little better than they used for their sleeves. It's smoother and a little crisper, but not by much.

@@MarkAtnip So they knew how to do it better but they probably just didn't care. To be fair, they also couldn't foresee that some people would be collecting them a century later.

Never seen one from the pre-LP era in person. But I would grab any that I did find.

Keep looking! It was probably 5 years before I found my first one. They show up every now and then!
