Of course, imho your reviews are best-of-the-best, no doubt about that. How many weeks took you to complete all those tests? Monumental amount of work for a youtube channel, this is a pro level review way beyond the wildest dreams of any gear magazine.
@MaxSoloMusic
@MaxSoloMusic 7 лет назад
Thanks! It actually took about an hour and a half to film each test. But I played it in my head over and over for months trying to find the right approach for each one. Many ideas didn't work first but eventually I found solutions to all topics I wanted to cover. Actually, it worked as soon as I put everything into practical context, like stiffness

Next on the agenda: Guitar Cables? Also, do you think that is would be safe to say that investing in Long (high capacity), but sturdy cables AND a good Buffer will solve most of the problems?
@MaxSoloMusic
@MaxSoloMusic 7 лет назад
Maybe :) something like that. I guess it really depends on how you gonna use it. For recording i'd better go for a short cable, like 1.5 meters or something. For live, chances are, no one in the audience will hear any difference. I'd go for wireless anyway :) But long cable + buffer is a good question. I'll make some tests!

Nick Humphrey hey, thanks for feedback. I figured it's really important how cables are used, not only the quality of isolation. Before overdrive or basically any gain stage isolation is essential. But once the signal passed that point, isolation is not that critical and EBS and others will do just fine most of the times

Great video and comparison, thanks! I will have to say though I own flat cables (EBS and Rockboard) and never had a sound issue neither on stage nor at home. On the other hand 3 of my sommer cables broke for no reason. And my old planet waves cables always seemed to push themselves out of the jack. So I will still go for the flat ones, simply because they are saving the most space and thus making your pedalboard easy to organize.
@FreckleFoxShow
@FreckleFoxShow 3 года назад
Nice to hear! I am planning on doing my first board using EBS PG patches only. These test seemed to only show that if you run cables with other noise on top on them or hit them with a fan that they would suck. I don't plan on doing either of those.

Very good test! Next, I'd like to see you do one on 1/4"-to--1/4" studio or instrument interconnect cables ( -since just about every musician and recording enthusiast uses them ) and there aren't many tests of them on RU-vid. However, this time I'd like to actually HEAR what music sounds like through the cables ( -in addition to the measurements ). Overall, great job! Really enjoyed watching this video.

Very thorough and useful. I’ve been looking into getting new patch cables and this was in valuable for seeing which ones to avoid or consider. I really liked the ergonomics of flat cables but it seems that they Can get more noise do to less isolation. I’m going to go back over the lists and determine what’s the best balance of profile, and flexibility versus noise. You just saved a lot of people I ton off frustrated purchasing and re-purchasing. Thanks!

My takeaways ~ (price estimates are in $AUD; I'm Australian, but from a 'worldwide' eBay search) Budget options: HOSA IRG 100.5 - 4 for $15 on eBay (have some noise and diffusion issues but not heaps) Old-Style Ernie Balls - 3 for $25 on eBay (quite reliable for the price) Medium price: Mooer PC-6 - $17.42 each Mooer FC-6 are also an okay option if you can't find any PC-6s (crosstalk, but low cap) High price: Ibanez PA105 - $89.02 each! (I believe they're discontinued) Providence V206 - $don't even bother Funny (but need a buffer right-before them in order to combat the high capacitance): Lava Mini Coil - $40 each "The Lava Retro Coil™ passes signal better than all other coils because the tone choking effects of high capacitance are minimized by using a 99.99% pure oxygen free copper low-strand count conductor and spiral shield as well as a nitrogen-injected FPE dielectric to dial in the capacitance to a sweet spot so this cable sounds just right - not too dark and not too bright." - Hahaha, YEAH, RIGHT!

The problem with low noise cables is it looks great in a test but when you start playing the guitar is noticeably quieter and those important nuances and frequencies are being removed from your signal, I would have thought its best to have a noisy cable and a noise suppressor that kills the noise when you stop playing.

Mooer PC-6 also a contender for best all-rounder, Providence V206 great too (but way too expensive!) Mooer FC-6 are quite good too if you can bare the possibility of a little crosstalk interference. HOSA IRG 100.5 are bit better with crosstalk, but worse with groundloop noise (not that there should be much of that in a proper set-up anyway). They are only $15-30 for a bundle of them though, so they make a great affordable, lightweight option. Alongside the somewhat meatier, but more reliable Ernie Ball 3-packs for about $25. These are all low capacitance for boards with lots of true bypass pedals, but a decent buffer at the start of the pedal chain would probably match them in performance anyway. Great info on buffers to be found here: All Things Buffers! - RU-vid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xPLVZOnKyso.html Not All Buffers Are Created Equal - RU-vid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KafO8IP6vEY.html

@@fuckenps3 The problem with the mooer pc 6 is the connector : the round end that plugs the connector/crimps the cable can "break" off. I've had to blue back multiple ones. I don't use a pedalboard though, if they are fixed in one position it should be ok

GREAT TIMING! Just found this video and your channel and this is the info I needed right now. I just purchased my first analog synth, the Behringer Model D. I’ve been producing Drum & Bass and electronic music in Reason & Ableton for 17+ years but I’m totally new to physical analog gear. Since the Model D is semi-modular and I have plans to build DIY synth modules and purchase a Neutron very soon, I’ve been reading articles and asking for advice on quality yet inexpensive patch cables to purchase. I was leaning towards modular addict which had patch cables for $0.99 for 6” straight plugs and goes up about $0.05 per cables length thereafter. Then about $3.00 for starting price for stackable cables. No idea the actual brand because I just found the website yesterday. Let’s see how I feel about those after your video. Because the only other name I recognized was ‘Hosa’ from seeing them on Amazon for about $20 for 6 x 6” cables. Then ‘Tendrils’ were recommended to me as quality cables as well, but those are roughly $13 per cable... kind of expensive for me starting out, and in using these only for synths; no pedals for me. Cheers! -H.B.

Never played through anything but Monster Cable which I know was quite expensive 22 years ago, so I'm sure there's some overly expensive replacement. Now if I need a cable my dad makes one for me out of decent instrument cable he has & gets some 90 right angle ends, solders them onto the cable & lets me know what the ends costs.

Great video. Still I will use my small fortune in EBS PG cables. The saving on space is what I like. Helped to know about pwr feedback now.

The ultra-cheap Joyo cables *easily* met your criteria for "Safe to Use" at 31:15 (very low capacitance, and low noise in the diffusion test and mechanical test), but for some reason you didn't put them on the slide. It might also be good to add cost to the ranking, as value definitely plays into the decision for most non-professional musicians. I mean really, I'd way rather use a $3 patch cable than a $25 cable if the more expensive one is equal in other aspects, or even if it is only marginally better. Great work! Thanks for this!

Thanks for pointing that out. I've just checked the results once again and yes, it fits the criteria. But at the same time it's in the red zone in the 'Trial by stone'. Therefore I couldn't put it onto the safe list.

Ernie ball flat patch cables are top on my list

Interesting. Thanks for all the work. I do very high end audio for a living and am friends with one of the more gifted cable designers around although he doesn't do instrument cables. There's more to sound than measurements but if the measurements are bad there's a problem. Unfortunately it looks like the Providence stuff, at least most of it, is no longer distributed in the U.S. Too bad. Thanks again for all your time and effort.

Hey Rick. Thanks for your comment. Take a look at www.providence-ltd.com/dealer.html - there has to be a way to get them in the US

Interesting video and I applaud your time and work. My only comment has nothing to do with the video itself but more with the "isolation noise" stuff. The diffusion and mechanical noises for most people aren't going to be a factor. Nobody (or at least any guitarist with some knowledge and common sense) would run a large power cable directly under or along side their cables and no one is going to have a fan (or mechanical noise) that close to their cables where it would actually pickup the noise. Most people in a live situation have their stuff mounted on pedalboards and there is nothing around close enough to cause that much interference. I've used most of the cables mentioned at one time or another including the EBS PG-10 Gold Flat cables which I see mentioned in another comment with absolutely no issues regarding noise of any kind. The bigger factor to me is capacitance and things like high end roll off, etc. Although some guys like Jimi Hendrix and Brian May used 100ft cables because they wanted that high end roll off...to each his own.

Great work. So going from memory, the mogami would have probably made the top ten but it’s shockingly bad capacitance results dropped it out of the running.

So from what I'm seeing, those Ibanez PA0105 for weight and the Providence V206 seem to offer the best results, overall. Of course, I can't find a supplier in the USA...
@MaxSoloMusic
@MaxSoloMusic 6 лет назад
Exactly! It looks like EMG is the official distributor for Providence products in the US. I'm surprised that there are no cables even at the Ibanez USA website. Didn't see this coming. you know what, i'll address this question to Ibanez
@MaxSoloMusic
@MaxSoloMusic 6 лет назад
Ok, here's what I found out. For some reason Ibanez really didn't bring any cables to the US market. More than that, the PA series is completely sold out in Europe and there's no more of it in stock. It may be coming back some time soon though
@bobisadrummer
@bobisadrummer 6 лет назад
They'd be sold out in the States too! From the performance, to the size, those things are really awesome, Ibanez isnmissing out on easy money. Thanks for looking into them!

This was a really great review and very scientific. The only one I've seen of its kind, going above and beyond. Could you do a review like this but with XLRs to see the difference between different XLR cables?
@MaxSoloMusic

I might do some more cable videos but nothing is planned for XLRs

Would like to see new version of video. And don’t forget tone check (with EQ, I suppose). Please, include 1 m/3m/ 7m cables. Personally, would happy to see your tests at fender festival hemp series, providence (especially E-series) cables, Ernie ball cables. Best.
