John Prophet lol Well it’s just an opinion but it was also the most deadly sniper in US Military history, Chris Kyle, preferred round (being the 300 Win Mag) reason being is that it was way cheaper than the 338 per shot but still had amazing knock down power at crazy ranges like 1 mile +. But that Chris Kyle reference wasn’t just a counter argument to what you said about a round out performing another round...it’s not the round homie, it’s the shooter...the round only really matters when it comes to power, speed as well as utility for things like armor piercing application...

Excellent shooting Mark, very informative, you touched on something I have never heard anyone ever mention in distance shooting was how the bullet behaved when travelling at supersonic speed and the effect of vibration when slowing down. Don't know if the 7mm got there more quickly unless you timed it and know for sure. The 7mm required 4 more elevation clicks than the 300... It starts faster but the heavy 300 retains velocity a bit better at that range.

The 300 win mag is more versatile round lighter grain bullets Have been known to go fast enough from that rifle to spin the jacket off of them ! But that will do you very much good long distance . You need the weight of the Bullard to carry speed downrange . The notary was just testing this two rounds .

Thanks Man, as for the 300 Norma, well it good round, nothing much more or less than it neighbors, but not that many around the place, the SOCOM choice may have some sound logic that is not obvious in real world performance, but some of these decisions defiantly fuel the need for more sales to get the new cool round in their possession, 6.5 Creedmoor for example. Great shooting. I used your data, guessing at some, and plugged both cartridges into the JBM online ballistics program. It appears that the program doesn't quite agree with your drops. This is not too surprising considering the range. The program had the 300 dropping 110.8 moa and the 7 dropping 123.5 moa. A little surprising was the point at which they went subsonic 1750 for the 7 and 1900 for the 300, considering they only differed by 50fps at the target. Great fun once again.

Hi Mark and Sam, great shooting and spectacular shooting range you have there. Being from Vic im jealous of the open ranges you westralians have at your beck and call. As a person who is looking to get his first long range rifle, i have looked many times at the APRS rifles. Seeing you shoot just as good with a modified stock rem, i beg to ask you, how much approx did the rem cost you after modifying against an APRS which i know is worth over $6500 AUD .
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 7 лет назад
Hi Glen, depends how much you do, cost would be similar for similar results, and doing your self you can spend even more if you take a couple of cracks at it. The factory Rem LR is great bang for the buck and a great place to start, but if you plan to go all the way as we have or even further with the likes of a heavy barrel, would be cheaper to start with the APRS, all the best bits from the start, Cheers

I've hunted with both and found the 7mm Remington to be much easier to deal with on all levels. I have a 6.5 Creedmore Bergara. Im thinking about a 300 WM by Christensen (Mesa Long Range). We have a 1,000 year range. Which is better at long range and does the 300 WM have too much recoil. I'm turning 70 this year
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 4 года назад
Hi Fred, lots of videos on our channel to help with that sort decision, but I do not offer personal recommendations, maybe ask a few of the guys at your range, but if only 1000 yards the 6.5cm will do that very easily and be nicer to shoot, Cheers

All things being equal I'm wondering if rifle twist makes any difference. Because they make 300 Win Mag in one in ten and one in eleven. But I believe 7 mm Remington mag is 1 in 9.45 in. I have shot 1 in 10 twist 300 Win Mag and 1 in 11 twist 300 Win Mag same barrel length and surprising difference of about 8% more energy with the faster twist.
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 5 лет назад
From what I have seen, the twist makes little difference, just need the right twist for the bullet weight your running, Cheers

I built me a custom wild cat hunting rifle that is a balance between your two rifles..... it is a blown out 7mm weatherby cartridge with a 37 degree shoulder and 91 grain capacity shooting the 195 grain berger hybrids with a bc1 of .755.... It shoots them with a velocity of 2970 with an extreme spread of 5 shots of only 5 ft/sec. I never calculated the sd's but it is very good. a lot of brass prep, weight sorted brass, powder charge less than .02 grains variation, bullet length of ogive sorted and by weight..... It has a custum cut single point barrel with a 1.3 inch diameter 4 inch long shank that tapers to .8 at muzzle.... no muzzle break, a lot of fun to shoot and a good long range gun for windy conditions for deer.....

What is your twist on the 7mm rem mag? I’m working on a custom 700 in 7mm rem mag. And my twist is 9.5. I don’t know if that’s enough to stabilize the burger 180. If it’s not I’m thinking of the hornady 168

2342 yards, wow that's beyond impressive. I do have a .300 Winchester magnum hunting rifle and it can shoot .25" to .50" inch groups at 200 yards using Hornady 168 grain bullets. I have always been told 165 grain is the best for 7mm. I shoot winchester Ballistic Silvertip 140 grain. One reason is the health of my shoulder. The other is the speed of the 7mm does tend to shoot clean through without expanding. Ballistic tip helps with that. And i feel 140 grain is all that's needed for white tail. I did shoot a 30 lb pig once at 200 yards behind the shoulder with this round. Bullet never touched a bone. Just poked a hole clean through. He squealed and ran 15 yards before bleeding out. But man what a flat shooting round.
