Appreciate the great bullet selection & real life #s for data. Both are simply excellent options for anything & everything in North America. I chose 7 mag back in the mid 80s as my choice for magnum rifle. I have no regrets. Many family and friends have great reasons for choosing the 300 Win Mag & a few opted for the 300 Weatherby. Your 7 results are pretty optimal IMO. You might pick up another 40-50 without problems using a bit slower magnum powder. We rarely get 3000fps out of our 180 handloads using a variety of magnum powders & 24" barrels. I think you have a better 300 load here than you think. Thanks again for great content. Enjoy.

Hey Chuck, great video thanks. I am slightly more in favour of 7MM mag than 300 mag due to ease of getting a good BC with the former. However both excellent calibres and hard to beat. Although a 7MM fan my favourite rifle is a 3006AI which is close to what your 300 mag did in velocity. In bear country I would rather have the 300. Both awesome calibres and I personally believe they are both ideal ‘one cartridge’ calibres for hunting in New Zealand. God Bless Dave

Both are excellent cartridges. I own one of each, but they see limited action these days. My .300 Weatherby, .340 Weatherby, and .28 Nosler are usually on first call when it comes to hunting out west. They'll probably get called up when I finalize my African plains game hunt next year as well. Last time I used my 7 Mag was ten years ago. Took two Texas whitetails with it. The .300 Win Mag last saw action about eight years ago in Wyoming, on a successful mule deer hunt. Incidentally, Bergara offers some well made, accurate rifles, and usually at a very price friendly waypoint, for the average Joe DeerTag. I handload the 7 Mag with 140 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips atop Reloader 19. For the .300 Win Mag, I shoot 180 grain Nosler AccuBond bullets over H1000. Both are spot-on, point-of-aim accurate, and the game always drops where it stood. I just prefer the extra velocity I can safely coax out of the Weatherby cartridges, while gaining flatter shot trajectories, and maintaining consistent accuracy. That .28 Nosler is a waaaay downrange bolt of lightning! I stoke it with 168 grain Nosler AccuBond LR bullets and Retumbo magnum powder. It's going with me to Wyoming and Colorado next month, along with my .340. Funny thing, when hunting the Midwest, all I ever use is my Remington 7400 semi-auto .30-06., see-thru scope mounts, with open iron sights, and a 3x9 fixed Redfield scope. Never shot one past seventy-five yards here at home. Most were like about twenty-five to fifty.

I am pretty biased towards the 7mm's. I own a 7mm Rem Mag, 280AI, 7 SAUM, and not to long ago I added the 28 Nosler. I'll probably have a 7mm PRC built once things start coming out for them to add to the arsenal. I really like tinkering with different cartridges and when it comes to the 6mm's, 6.5mm's, and 7mm's I have a really good selection just because I can do everything from long range plinking, compete, and comfortably hunt everything on this continent. That said if all I did was hunt big brown bears, shoot out past say 1500ish yards or maybe did the Africa hunting thing I'd have something bigger but other then an old 30-30 and 30-06 I inherited I don't use or own anything bigger then a 7mm.

$50 a box ammo? I wish. I'm in B.C. I went to The Great Satan's Store (Cabela's) today to get some H4350 and thought I'd get some .308 and .300WM. I like 165grn Nosler AB's for my .308 and wanted 200grn Federal Terminal Ascent for the .300. $99CDN for each!!! Just about burst a blood vessel when I saw that!!! I can get both alot cheaper elsewhere. After 12% tax, it would be $110.98 for .308!!! Lord Thunderin'. I can place an order with an outdoor store in the next province over that sells that same Federal ammo for $80 and does NOT have the Provincial sales tax that we do here. Guess where I'm getting my factory ammo from? Not the mark up kings, Cabela's. They have really gone downhill in a serious way since Bass Pro took over. Sad. Anyway, I like both but like the 7mmRm a little better.

Great job comparing bullets with similar "form factors" where the sectional density is the common denominator. Well done Chuck !! As far as speeds are concerned, as much as I like and use Reloader 22, it isn't the one yielding the fastest speed in the 300 Win Mag. Try Reloader 17, and at the other end of the spectrum , Reloader 26. With your longer barrel, you'll get close to 3100 fps and more, you may match the speed of the 145 grain LRX in the 7 Rem Mag. Rel 17 gave me good results with close to a maximum load for the 168 grains TTSX. a bit above 3220 fps with excellent S.D, less than 10 fps consistently and good groups ! With that combination on two separate occasions... I haven't tried the 175 LRX yet. With Hornady's 165 grains GMX (not CX) using Reloader 17, I got off the chart speeds but big discrepancy in S.D. and the groups were not good while the Superformance loaded rounds from Hornady with that particular bullet gave exceptional speed and accuracy. I'd try the Barnes bullets with that powder.

I like both but I like the 7mmRm just a wee bit more. Just wondering... have you ever tried 9.3X62 Mauser? I'd like to see you do a video on that caliber. Including testing penetration. I think 170 grain and 200 grain bullets respectively take a good bit more advantage of the cartridges potential. Going lighter with magnum cartridges has such diminishing returns in velocity. The actual energy and especially momentum at the muzzle (not to mention lower BC) with middle weight bullets no longer seems like a proper magnum but closer a hot .270 and 30-06. Good test though.

I load them long, with a COAL of 3.640" which allows for more power than loading them at the 3.340" COAL. I'm getting 3,074 fps with the 208gr and 2875 fps with the 225gr. Both are excellent 1-mile steel-bangers. Shooting 175s in a 300 Win Mag strikes me the same as shooting 110s in a 7mm Win Mag...Sure you can do it, but why? I have long been biased against 7mm Rem Mag. Over promoted and under performing in so many combos of factory rifles and ammo. Custom and full 26" barrels and handloads can change it to what most people think it always was. Performance doesn't just happen. You have to make the effort and see to it that it happens.

I had an early SS rem 700 24" 7 mag, liked it, bot my pretty wife a 270 (22") to have a kinda matching long range rifle. Oehler 33... 7 mag 160's - 3000 f/s Dont remember, 4831 or RL 22. 270 130's also 3000f/s, same powders. Hmmm... only 30 grains difference, 2.5 lb lighter rifle, 2" shorter, way less recoil... Nosler partitions - any REAL difference? Sold the 7 Mag. I did later come by a new 700 in 300 WM... 180's - 3000 - 3050 f/s. Now GO FIGURE THIS! I consistently got Better pressure /velocities with 4350 in the 300, while my 30-06 got the same with Norma 205. I could not make 2700 with any other powder in my '06, 205 consistently gives me 2730. Not max, either! Counter intuitive, eh? I also do better with 4350 and 200 gr partitions in that 300 WM. Case geometry? The gun? Work up some loads with H4350 (temp stable) and play around. I guess I'm an iDio+. Sectional density is the most BS waste of time POS term still used in hunting. Sectional density is the weight of a stationary bullet divided by its cross sectional area before it expands. I've never killed a deer with a stationary bullet that didn't expand! It has absolutely ZERO effect on game or terminal performance. It can be correlated to BC but nothing else. A monolithic bullet with the same SD as a lead bullet will perform drastically differently and both will depend on their velocity. The rest of the video is great! My suggestion to you is when using monolithic bullets, drop the weights by 20% +/- because they maintain their weights so well after impact they don't need to be heavy. So try a 110 gr TTSX or LR-X in the 7mm and maybe 130 gr TTSX or LR-X in the 30 cal. The speeds will go way up and the terminal performance will improve drastically, and so will your point blank range.
