Overall the video wasn't bad but one of the biggest things that most people overlook as did this video is the cooling capability of the laptop. After you're set on a specific gpu and processor, the immediate next thing you should look at is whether the laptop can cool those components. If it can't, then youll get thermal throttling and performance issues and you won't get the performance that you paid for. Look for the number of heat pipes, fans, and exhaust ports. Also worrying about the loudness of fans is pretty silly in gaming laptops.
@stephanieb7330
@stephanieb7330 4 года назад
Yeah 100% agree. My dell xps 15 is _the worst_ . It is so loud after doing five mimutes of web browsing and just when opening games 😫
@sajalpatil6592
@sajalpatil6592 4 года назад
Agreed. I mean my gaming laptop is silent when i need it and i have power when i need it. How does someone buy a gaming laptop and bitch about fan noise is beyond me. If anything, that noise under load gives me assurance that my thermals are being taken good care of.
@Name548
@Name548 4 года назад
@@stephanieb7330 I know its common for people to not like the loudness if fans but with laptops more oriented towards gaming (I believe yours has a 1650ti graphics card) there is no way around fan noise. A more work oriented laptop i agree should prioritize fan noise level more, but I wouldn't expect a work computer to have the same hardware as a gaming laptop. Components need to be cooled, otherwise you'll get the thermal throtting and problems that I mentioned in my previous comment. Back when I used a laptop for gaming, I would use MSI's fan boost setting to kick the fans into a higher rpm than they would automatically go. Was is loud? Yeah, but the cooling was very impressive for a modern gaming laptop. Any quality pair of headphones will also make the fan noise disappear. These days I have my pc that I built with a total of 12 fans all running about 85% speed. Its pretty loud, but even with open back headphones, you cant even hear it. In the end, theres no way around fans unless you sacrifice performance and as long as they're cooling things properly, i say you should embrace the cooling power lol
@sajalpatil6592
@sajalpatil6592 4 года назад
@@Name548 nah mine just has a plain 1650. I am actually a student and i really wanted to not spend a lot of my parents money. So yeah for the college i just put it on silent mode (i mean we don't really need the power there). Then when i want to game i just put it on performance and m good to go. Btw i too want to build a pc one day by myself(couldn't do it rn bcz being a student portability is a must for me)
@stephanieb7330
@stephanieb7330 4 года назад
@@sajalpatil6592its same for me. Plus it isn't really a gaming laptop. It has the pieces and hardware for it but it just... isn't? Like more intensive games will lag and won't perform as well. Also, the fans would just go off after a few minutes of jist browsing the web. The cores would also reach 100+ degrees without doing anything so I'd say the cooling system was rubbish anyway

Never really owned a laptop before tho, especially a gaming one at that, and looking at the prices i'm just in shock, i could get a gaming pc and a regular laptop for the price of one of these laptop beasts. I'm currently split between getting a full size PC or getting a mid range laptop, do you think a midrange laptop would do well in some csgo, maybe AutoCAD and some other programs? At so many corners of the internet people are saying, “DONT BUY GAMING LAPTOP, BUILD PC”. The truth is, you’re going to find a way to justify your purchase whatever it is you buy. I had an Acer Aspire 750g for 8 years- not exactly the best laptop, even at the time but it lasted me until 2020 thanks to my ssd upgrade- It’s still a fast computer, good for school, browsing and light programming. I’ve built 2 gaming PC’s since then and love having them, but being able to untether yourself is a HUGE perk. If gaming is the only thing you want to do, sure. Build a PC and save the money, or buy a console if you’re that strapped for cash, but You can do so much more than just game. Think of it as a tool and invest wisely. People spend upwards $600-$1100 on a smartphone with a fraction of the capability, but the same people think twice before buying a laptop. Do your own research and stop trusting the tech you tubers blindly.

My ROG needed numerous items replaced under warranty: screen, speakers, cord receptacle, etc. which were all physical items, no software issues. I had to follow strict rules to send it back, having to create a custom box and I had to pay the $35 for shipping!! When I got it back, absolutely nothing on my list had been repaired. Not only that, my computer was scratched, the stickers half peeled off that say Microsoft, Intel, etc., it was put back together with the components not lined, up, so you see the insides of the computer on one side, it had the black screen of death and would not function, the cord was wound so up tight that it was broken and caused a short, the battery no longer charged, and they deleted everything from my computer, which was completely unnecessary, and they didn't back anything up. So I lost all my info, and ASUS broke my computer! ASUS told me they don't have a repair center, so they hire out repairs. Since they had many complaints about that center, they would no longer use them. ASUS has never, ever replaced or repaired my laptop that they damaged and also failed to repair it under warranty, as they agreed to. I have spoken to them and filed claims numerous times. They failed to give me an RMA# and failed to send me a shipping label. When I call them, they say they don't pay for shipping, and its out of warranty, as if I'm calling them for the first time. They have absolutely ignored all responsibility for essentially destroying my computer.

I think the number one biggest mistake buying a laptop you did not even mention. Always buy laptops around black Friday/Cyber Monday. I purchased a few weeks ago an Omen 15" 8gb gtx1660ti 4800H for $849. Upgraded to 16gb 3200mhz CL22 ram for 50 bucks. I am a happy camper. The money I save goes to my next laptop. Instead of getting the latest and greatest and spending an arm and a leg, buy trailing edge technology at black Friday and use the hundreds of dollars towards your next upgrade that will also be trailing edge instead of bleeding edge.

Tbh even in 2021 getting a laptop with parts considered "last gen" at the time of this video's upload is still a very decent option! In 2019 as a Christmas present i got a Dell G7 7588 laptop which has both a GTX 1060 Max Q and an Intel core i7-8750H and it's still Very serviceable to this day for gaming, at least. I'm not so sure about the more workstation related stuff though as that's not really my focus lol. Plus, there are still very few games, at least from what I've seen so far, that require anything above older components like GTX 900 series gpus, so really older hardware like this shouldn't be much of a problem for at least another good couple of years or so from the looks of it. So yeah in these current times this older hardware is still Very viable for regular use, especially as a budget option for those who still may need a laptop, and it'll likely last you quite a while as well :)

The legion is the only one of those that has a mux switch. Omen has quality control problems and is more expensive. As for the screen, it seems to vary. I’ve seen some competitive gamers say low response panels like the A15 don’t bother them, other said it was horrible.

There are no mistakes in buying a laptop. People stay within their means and Laptops cost money! Those who want all the best GPU and CPU - let them send their money! I never use my laptops outside the home and I have 10 of them. 6 are mining - the others are for gaming. The batteries are never used - they are always plugged in - so all batters have either been removed or unplug from the inside to save the life of the batteries.

I currently own an Acer Predator “laptop” (desktop replacement) that is absolutely amazing. It’s great quality, it’s VERY powerful, with awesome specs, and lots of upgradability. Yet I likely won’t buy another Acer. Why?? Acer have shown with this model that they have HORRIBLE support for their products. This model is especially unique because it’s honestly desktop parts that have been custom shaped to fit in a mobile case, yet they aren’t providing any of the same support their desktops are receiving, let alone even any support for over a year now, and are treating it like some $200 chrome book and not the $2400 beast it is. While every B450 motherboard received AGESA code that added optimizations and faster speed RAM support even prior to Zen 2’s releasing, they never provided these updates for this model and haven’t given a single BIOS update with any B450 improvements in the lifespan so far of the system. Why release a desktop fitted in a laptop if you don’t provide any of the advantages desktops enjoy that would factor into the customer’s decision to purchase this model vs a standard laptop?? And because the BIOS is locked AND encrypted, owners are prevented from being able to take matters into their own hands and make the updates themselves. There is a 15” desktop replacement Zen laptop from Clevo with near identical components that has enjoyed ALL the updates and improvements since it released and Clevo is even going to attempt to add Zen 3 upgrade capability if they can find a solution that works with their 16mb ROM size, but even if it doesn’t happen, they’ve already demonstrated proper support for this system is possible and already exists, but not with Acer. Even if the unique qualities are removed from the picture, there have been numerous driver and software issues that Acer still has yet to address despite their message forums FULL of stories of calls to customer care and complaints of Acer doing nothing and requests for help from others! Unacceptable for a $2500 product still under warranty! I will say, owners of this model are a close knit bunch simply because we have to help each other to find methods to fix our problems since Acer doesn’t. Acer’s engineering and hardware design team did a phenomenal job designing and building a remarkable machine with no other to compare it to, but the software choices to lock and encrypt the BIOS, to lock or omit common desktop settings normally on every desktop BIOS, not providing the same desktop BIOS updates when they release for all the rest, all make this a powerful example of wasted potential. There is nothing other than software locks that are keeping this machine from being capable of gaining a good 20% or more performance simply if it received system optimizations. If it were to also receive the code enabling an upgrade to a newer AM4 socket CPU, it could potentially be up to 80% MORE POWERFUL than its original capability! Likely more since it’s cooling solution is somehow better than most desktop liquid coolers and easily handles overclocking temps without thermal throttling. It’s sad to see that the design team provided the company with a system capable of still so much more, yet isn’t being taken advantage of.
