2a03 + MMC5 cover of Bakamitai from the Yakuza series.
A few days ago I made this as a birthday gift for Gabe Fern, an amazing pixel artist and dear friend. He got me into the Yakuza games, and it's been a blast playing through 0 and Kiwami!
I tried making this a 2a03-only cover, but I struggled to make the chorus stand out, so I decided to add the MMC5 to power it up.

Yeah, The Famicom (NES) had little to no DAC so thats why every waveform that the Famicom produces is just pure square waves and that's also why it's possible to change the pitch and volume of the triangle channel with the DPCM Delta values!

@@wawan8759 The noise channel is secretly just a bunch of square waves being modulated by a transistor (Correct me if I'm worng) in the Famicom. The noise channel also has the same exact DAC problems as the triangle wave (The noise channel's volume can also be changed using the delta value from the DPCM channel)

It wasn't until I watched a video on how they created the sound of the original pokemon cry sounds that I realized how much work and craft went into the sound production of the older games like on the NES and Gameboy. It's amazing.

This is pretty much the tone of Yakuza in a single remix. Rather uppity and fun-sounding on the surface, but a heartbreaking adventure when you look into it.

So on point, this version of the song really says it all lol. I think of the fun tone of 24 hour Cinderella Majima sings as an example in zero contrasting with his story over all.

This was my childhood. My best friend used to visit me a lot. I would turn on the NES and put this game on. But, of course, everybody grows up. Times were simple back then. Yakuza was (and still is) the best NES fighting game.

Incredible remix!!! It took me too long to realize that the visualization consists of the literal waveforms of the instruments (probably should've read the description haha). I can't stop rewatching to appreciate all the changes in amplitude, wavelength, and wave shape. The vibrato and slides are particularly satisfying, as well as the arpeggios in the bottom left instrument that comes in at "Dame da ne."
