I sit at brewster's bar, and stare at my cup of coffee. It's cold. Colder than the air conditioner in its vain attempt at beating back the raging summer heat outside. I know the old bird is looking at me. His face is stone, but I can feel the heat from the glare behind those dark shades of his. I take the brunt of his stare: a bastard like me can endure that much at least. Finally, the guitarist finishes his song and ask for requests. I raise my hand and while I can't see him, I know he's nodding. He gets it. The song is slow, and morose, and brings back memories. Memories I had hoped to keep buried like I currently was, under this mountain of debt that damned raccoon swindled me into. You never realize what you miss until it's gone. Never truly get to appreciate what you have until you can no longer take it for granted. I reach into my jacket's breast pocket and pull out a photograph. It's old and faded with time, but the smiles captured in it shine as bright as the day it was taken. It brings back a warmth in my chest that I can't bear to face at that moment, so I drown it out in cold coffee. It's cold, dark, and bitter, and was ignored for too long. I add this part of me back to myself as I continue to look at the picture. In the background the guitarist reaches the song's peak, and the patrons around clap at the frankly spectacular performance. Had I not been so trapped in memory, I would have tossed him a bell or two, or even bothered to take the cassette he offered. But...It wasn't for me. I had already lost so much because I was so foolish. And before I even knew it, my love had been left behind. I miss you, Durians.
