8 Books You Should Read To Save Society - Before It's To Late...
This new-themed 8-book reading series is going to cover the demise of education and how that leads to a lack of morals and eventually the road to totalitarianism and serfdom.
What happens when we move away from a classical education? What happens to society when morals are lost? These are some of the issues we will be covering in this reading series and we will also go over how society has been corrected and fixed in the past. These books below are not all-inclusive of the problems society faces and surely not the sole fix. Reading books and reading important books has never been more important than now. We must do our duty to safeguard the liberty we still exercise and push back against all the external forces closing in. No single person can stop the demise, but if we all educate ourselves and stand as a union again, we will at least have a chance. I hope you enjoy this reading series and I would love it if you would join me along this journey. The books are listed below in the order I will cover them.
Stay blessed!

I loved reading Hayek and various other authors on individual liberty back in the 90s. I devoured those books and they are great for exercising logical thinking. Sowell is probably the most well known among contemporary authors in that sphere.

Bought "A Defence of Classical Education" thanks to your recommendation. I had just finished "The Well-Educated Mind" and I am finding the beauty of the classics. I'm hoping to develop my character and thinking more through this journey and then to share it with my newborn twins.

Rob!! So glad RU-vid just randomly pushed me this video brother! I absolutely love this idea and everything it looks like you’re doing with this channel. Between the camo hat and the Harvard classic bookshelf in the background, I was on board in the first 10 seconds! Can’t wait to see all this vids man, and personally my vote for the next series would be American/French revolution - that has been a topic that has deeply interested me and I’d love to hear your take! Keep up the great work my man!

haha yes indeed! I am glad we bumped into each other in this virtual world as well. I truly appreciate you stopping by and the kind words mean a lot. Hey Rob! I found you a couple days ago through your "How to Read a Book" by Adler video- I myself am currently starting a multi-year project of reading through The Great Books of the Western World series. I, too, believe the West has fallen. Although I am Canadian, I can see the need for our countries to start promoting Western values once more. We need a just, principled, and honourable leadership to be brought back into power by the people of our respective governments. Our reading materials reflect just how far we have fallen- the general populace has forgotten where we've come from and the lessons learned over the past 26 centuries. I'm looking forward to your content immensely !
@The_Cause
@The_Cause Месяц назад
I agree with you whole heartedly. A force has crept in that has completely changed the West's trajectory and I am not even quite certain if I can put my finger on what the force actually is. I guess it is an amalgamation of things/ideas. I think the Great Books are a wonderful series and I can not wait to venture down them one day as well. It is nice to see the spark in others who value the same ideas. I do not know what the fix is but I know we would be closer to solving it if more people chose to read through that set. I truly appreciate you watching my friend and wish you the best on your journey that Adler went on. Stay blessed my friend!

@@The_Cause There is something to be said for the weak men creating hard times line of thinking but it feels like more. There have always been cycles throughout history but this feels different , as you have pointed out. I have a feeling it has something to do with the globalization of cultures over the past 50 years. During the last 20 especially. The instant communication of the internet and smart devices are the double edged sword; you and I can connect and share our budding knowledge and wisdom or we can watch shock pranks and performative outrage... This has increased the speed of decline to the point where people like you and I can actually feel it whereas the people of the past could not. It would take them decades, or even centuries, to see the decline we have seen IMO. I know the past has answers for us and we need them now. People like you broadcasting this type of knowledge and value may not aid in slowing the decline but will allow those who pay attention a choice cut guide for the best cuts of the beast that was the West to start anew. Well done. Looking forward to learning more from you; our modern day Enkidu (couldn't help it given your beard lol)

My vote is on revolutions for the next topic. You should consider running a “book club” of sorts (maybe even put it behind a premium subscriber paywall?). I’d be interested in having a reason to read these books myself and discussing with likeminded folks. If you haven’t yet, you should make a video on how you read and learn as I’m sure that skill is sorely lacking these days.
@The_Cause
@The_Cause Месяц назад
All great ideas and I am indeed leaning to the revolutions theme. My wife mentioned the book club and my only fear is committing to something and not being able to deliver 100%. @MrMattirving
@MrMattirving Месяц назад
I second the idea of a book club, of sorts. This, after all, is another kind of 'great conversation' and one that will help people get a better handle on the material in the books you've suggested we read. You could look at doing online meetings where we come together to discuss the ideas. Although I come from the UK, we share many common societal and political issues -- education being a primary one. It doesn't take long for identity politics that originated in the states to infest the UK educational system, and a conversation about what to do sounds necessary and healthy.

A large majority of Americans neither understand nor accept the social contract. They think they are entitled to everything and owe nothing. We are dominated by a culture of selfishness-that is, immorality.
@99balloons99

I think you'd enjoy Rawls, I'd admit to being more left of centre but I feel Rawls has stuff for everyone and aligns with a lot more classical views of just societies. As always loving your videos, they are a constant source of motivation to expand my horizons.
@hawkname1234
@hawkname1234 Месяц назад
@@The_Cause When you study Rawls, make sure you cover the "veil of ignorance" as it is instructive when combined with the concept of the social contract if you want to think in a sophisticated way about opportunity and morality. You have a LOT of weight pulling you towards believing that Selfishness is a virtue. Hayek and his disciples (Ayn Rand) will do that. There is a large fraction of the population that want you to believe that selfishness (or greed) is good. That efficiency is more important than humanity. That wealth is more important than broad prosperity. But you'll have to decide what your values are. If you decide to embrace selfishness and self-sufficiency as a virtue, there is a whole culture waiting to welcome you, and point out the people who don't deserve to live as well as you do.

I am not too familiar with the Peloponnesian War enough to speak on. I am listening to Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and it is very similar. I won't read alongside you. I have plenty of books on my bookshelf which also wait to be read. But I still look forward to your new series. You chose another great topic. I'm curious what you want to cover when you compare Islam and Christianity. I listened a bit into the Islam Christianity debate here on RU-vid. My favorite deepdiver into that topic is TooManyMaries on the Reasoned Answers channel. She diggs through all the academic works on the historical side of Islam, especially those parts which are during the early days of Mohammed and before. When it comes to the the revolutions, we only looked at the French one at school. And we also didn't look really deep into it. For example I didn't learn that there was the cult of reason which killed thousands of priests and nuns. I heard about that only years later. I asked the teacher why we learn about the French revolution and not the English one. After all shouldn't we learn how to do it without bloodshed? He gave some non-answer. But in my opinion the reason why we learn that is because the French revolution is the founding story of the Atheists who are our intellectual rulers in academia. One book I'm currently reading is _"The First Seven Ecumenical Councils (325-787): Their History and Theology"._ I'm only at the first of all the councils. As a protestant, it is surprising to read the history of it. When I read the old testament, God gave us laws to live by, and humans failed pretty quickly. When Jesus came, he fulfilled the law and gave us a stricter one. This is the sermon on the mount. But by the time of the first council, there is such a large ruleset again, it almost looks like the Christians invented the old law again. I'm curious what the rest of the book will bring.

I completely understand about the books on a shelf yet to be read. I am about to make a rule that for every one book I buy I have to read two I already have that have not been read. lol As for the islam/christianity debate it just fasinates me how two relgions can literally be at War with one another for over a millennia. Once I realized that only about a 1/3 of Christendom was left after the conquests of Islam it really made me want to research it more. As for the revolutions I think the success of the American Revolution is unique in that nothing in history really compares to it. From what it started as to what it became in less than 200 years is insane. Comparing it to the French Revolution is important because we are much closer to the culture of France in our modern times than America in 1776. I think it will be a fun journey. Sounds like the audience would like to go in that direction. As always, I truly appreciate you watching and stay blessed!

@@The_Cause When it comes to your fascination that two religions can be at war with each other then I have to say I understand it in case of Islam. After all the reason why Christianity was so long at war with Islam is because it didn't die even though Islam waged war with it for such a long time. I can recommend the book "The history of Jihad" to get one angle on this topic. I found the first half very depressing, because it was pure conquest without anyone managing to put a stop to it. The very same question, but between Catholics and Protestants is more curious to me. Unlike the Quran the Bible doesn't say we have to forcefully convert other people _(or in Muslim words, you have the choice between conversion, dhimmi status or death)._ The Christian theologians don't say any nation that is not Christian is per definition at war with the entire Christian world. But there was still plenty of blood shed between the Catholics and Protestants. Almost like a civil war that went on for a millennia. I recently finished Foxe's Book of Martyrs. Sure, from todays perspective that guys writing style seems to be very biased. But what he wrote is still mostly true. And there have been many Christians since long ago who were tortured, exiled, who's possession was stolen and who were killed by other Christians for not believing correctly. One reason why that may be of interest to me is that this is a somewhat recent thing from Swiss history too. For example my protestant grandparents were not allowed to play with catholic children when they were young. I think my parents generation is the first Swiss generation where this problem started to disappear. Today the sentiment ranges from _"You have some weird practices. I don't think that all of them are really Christian."_ to _"Let's do some ecumenical Sunday services together."_

Hello Rob, I've been watching your videos since day one. I've enjoyed them and learned a lot from them, I even bought a copy of the five foot shelf because of them. That alone will enrich my life in ways I can't express. I'm thankful for that. But, I am beginning to dislike how your commentary is drifting from that excellent academic analysis towards becoming more inflammatory towards those who are not classically minded. I've seen this fall happen to other channels, especially among those who were offered sponsorships from Conservative think tanks and it would be a shame to see the same happen to yourself, someone who is clearly articulate, intelligent and passionate about learning and teaching. I only make this comment, because learning ultimately involves being able to look at others who demonstrate actions one disagrees with, and then have the wisdom to accept them and their many flaws with the knowledge that you too are not faultless. Your opening phrases in this video are counter to this ideology, because they aggressively rhetorical rather than balanced and logical. This is very much unlike the 'you' you've shown us before. In fact, the general tone of what you are claiming about the 'Fall of the West' is no different from those rage-baiting, far-right fear-mongering channels which aim to grift and create an 'us vs them' mentality by claiming the barbarians are at the door and you and your viewers alone can be stalwart defender of the faith. If you're consuming such content, it's likely influencing you to a degree which isn't healthy. Similarly, if you intend to produce that same content, I won't be subscribing. Despite that, you've chosen some great books for this next venture, with one exception; after reading 'Dumbing us Down' by Gatto I was very disappointed to learn he endorsed Donald Trump in 2016 (per his blog) and that work along with all his others contained neither sources nor evidence for his claims, only conspiratorial speculation on his theories. In fact, his claims of 'an elite cabal aims to teach leadership to their own, whilst the masses are taught how to follow' was lacking such little evidence that he's been widely criticised by more rigorous classical education reformers. Given that, I feel it's best to re-consider that book for review. Thanks for taking the time to read these thoughts and I hope you take some time to consider them.

I truly appreciate your comment. It really means a lot to hear from those who may disagree with me or, I with them. There is a fine line between divisive rhetoric and surviving on RU-vid. RU-vid will literally not provide any impressions of content that does not "excite" at least some. I have chosen to keep it to a minimum as best I can. As far as the "decline of the West" it is not a question of whether it has occurred. We can all see that it is in process. I understand that we may disagree with this and I do not base my views on other channels or the news. I do not have FB or IG on my phone. Experiences at work, issues with our local schools, and the breakdown in my own community that I have witnessed are alarming to me personally. I am in my mid-30s so I remember a time that was not like what I am currently experiencing. This is not even turning on the news and witnessing the two presidential candidates that I get to choose between. The West is in decline. It was most definitely not just one side or one enemy or one group or however you want to define it. When I mention the enemy, it is not a side I am referring to. It is a force in society. I am sure if we sat down and had a coffee we would most likely be on the same page. If anything I will make that more clear in my future videos. My aim is not to pit me against you. But we need to band together and solve this problem before we no longer can. Again, thanks for the civil comment and I truly appreciate you taking the time to explain your point. Stay blessed my friend!

Your theme seems to be: Our Republic is in "trouble" because of a decline in education and morals and here is a way to restore the republic. I'm sure people have other reasons they think is causing our republic to be less than ideal. For example: I don't think the Founders wanted a two party system, yet we have it. Would having more than two viable parties restore some of the missing republic? Certainly today's educational system and our morals are different than the nation's founding. I do not want to adopt the educational system and beliefs of the 18th century.
@The_Cause
@The_Cause Месяц назад
The founders did not want a two party system but they were all well aware of human nature and a party system is what they would eventually get. The founders are the ones that created the parties while the government was being created with the Federalist and Antifederalist. To fix that would be to fix human nature’s tribal mentality and I do not believe the mass is capable of that, in my humble opinion. I do not want to adopt the past’s mistakes and faults either. What they had correct should be resurrected and parsed out from what we realize was a mistake or not desirable. All of these issues, I do believe, can only be solved by educating the public to think clearly and communicate ideas in such a way that we understand the needs of our current times and devote the energy necessary to solve the problems we face. I am glad you brought this up because I will try and address it the best I can in the series. But I also agree, education is not the end all be all fix. It is just one side of a many sided problem. Truly appreciate you watching and thanks so much for the feedback! Stay blessed!

@@The_Cause I don't think it's possible to ban political parties. It would be nice to dilute their influence, e.g. there seems too much loyalty to parties over what's best for the country as a whole. I'm not advocating for this but something like Ranked Choice voting may help. A healthy democracy must embrace compromise. Something that can be very hard to do. When people no longer compromise, a democracy breaks. Sadly, we are quickly losing our ability to compromise.

Hey Rob! I wanted to say, first of all, that I greatly appreciate you for reviving some interest in the classics on RU-vid, and for your often insightful discussions of those works. However, I've noticed some really incendiary rhetoric in some of your videos (like this one), and I wanted to bring it to your attention, and share my thoughts. Sure, to some it might feel like "Western culture is being demonized", but I think it would be hard to argue that Western culture at large is experiencing demonization--perhaps particular aspects that could be associated with it, and only in certain circles. I find this sort of alarmist rhetoric to be somewhat dangerous--though of course it's very watchable--because it appeals to the assumptions of people to either get them to instinctively react positively or negatively to the content, rather than interacting with it intellectually (as the rest of your channel seems to be aiming to do). This rhetoric also drives away potential viewers (those like myself), who find themselves more to the left politically and don't believe the claims about an attack on family and moral values (at least not in the same way that you seem to). I appreciate your perspective on these issues, but I would appreciate a more nuanced, and less incendiary, way of getting this across. I love reading, philosophy, and intellectual discussion, which I found your channel to provide, but this sort of talk does worry me. Best of luck, and I'm excited to see what this series has in store!

I appreciate you bringing up the matter in a civil way. Usually RU-vid comments do not trend in that direction. I agree with you that my rhetoric may be changing. That change is based on what I am experiencing. A wise man said “different men often see the same subject in different lights”. I see things differently. I look at the landscape of our country and I realize that it is broken and family is not at the heart of concern. How do we bring up the issues that many feel passionately about without offending? I don’t have the answers I admit. I read these old books to find them. I will do my best to dial back the incendiary aspects as much as possible as I do not want that to dominate the message. My goal is to just get people interested in a classical education and to explore the idea of reeducating themselves. It is becoming harder to go through life idle and not speak up about issues. I’m listening to the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbons and maybe that has me over thinking things right now. It’s a process I have to explore and go down. I will ponder on this comment for sure as I appreciate critique no matter good or bad. As long as I am growing and improving that is the focus. Thanks so much for watching and stay blessed my friend!

@@The_Cause Thank you for the reply. I enjoyed Gibbon's work and it caused me to enter into a period of deep introspection too. My follow-up question would be: is the landscape you see in your day to day life changing, or is the artificial landscape painted for you by the mass media suggesting that life is changing? If it's the former, then life is likely safe and sound. If it's the latter, then tune away from the TV, vox pops and social commentators, because your attention would be far better invested in your classic works which have stood the test of time, rather than a modern soundbite which will be forgotten tomorrow. When someone introduces a viewpoint that you find challenging or uncomfortable, and your first instinct is to dismiss it as AI, that’s a bright red warning sign that you do not have an open mind and you are not willing to engage with ideas in good faith. Having an open mind is one of the pillars of this channel’s content. By classifying people as “activists with a slant,” especially THIS particular person who left a very tame, thoughtful, and polite comment, you are revealing your own rather extreme slant.
