Book 7 was not my favorite but book 8 was pretty dang good! I hope you enjoy this video! If you want to sip some amazing coffee as you read through some old books try out the coffee that I roast here. www.cedarotacoffee.com Stay blessed!
I have not yet made it this far on my read through(s) of Paradise Lost, yet I find myself fascinated on account of the fact that I am reading through Genisis....for the first time....at the age of 36. Look, I was not raised by church-goers, nd am not what one would call a religious man or even a "believer". But I recognized that I was missing vast swaths of the foundational myths that generated all these great works. It so happened that some door-to-door bible thumpers stopped by my house, and I have since had several long theological discussions with them. I promised to make it at least through Genisis as soon as I had finished Montaigne, and so that is what I am doing. This is great timeing on account of that!
Hey man I just wanted to let you know that I bought your coffee recently and its awesome! Also wanted to go ahead and thank you for what you are doing on here. I am currently going through your collection of videos and reading along with some of them. Your videos have been the final push that I needed to better educate myself with the classics and I cannot wait to further broaden my knowledge. Keep up the great work here and with your coffee!
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it! Roasting has been a fun journey to go down. Reading through the classics and creating these videos has been just as rewarding of an experience. I have learned more in the past year than the previous decade which is kind of embarrassing. Glad these videos have helped you along your journey. We have a long way to go my friend before we get to the end of this pilgrimage! Stay blessed buddy!
Thanks again for this series, Rob. In addition to the podcast format would you consider making the audio only versions available on iTunes too? The versatility would be worth the outlay!
Hey! Thanks so much for the kindness! It’s truly appreciated. I also upload these to all the podcast platform such as Spotify and ITunes. Link below is for ITunes. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-cause-rob-pirie/id1705460825?i=1000661921507 I truly am happy to hear you enjoy this series and thanks so much for watching! Stay blessed my friend!
Rob, so much for this vid. I wondered how your PL reading was going. I greatly appreciate the depth and thoughtfulness you share. I found it fascinating that Milton’s Adam engaged in conjugal love BEFORE the Fall. There are a couple of other verses regarding God the Son’s subordance to God the Father that explain why Milton was considered a non-conformist in his time. After PL, I decided to read Pilgrim’s Progress. (For some reason I’ve been drawn to reading works I learned about in high school English Literature). Bunyon’s allegories in the first part are very powerful, but the writing not nearly as masterful as Milton’s. It’s amazing to think how these classics (a generation, or so, ago) were considered essential to being a well-educated person. Very best wishes to you! Mike
Hey Mike! I am slowly making my way through it. The video portion has taken longer than planned but it has really made me dive into the material more. I can’t wait to finally get to Pilgrim’s Progress which is in volume 15. Just going to be a bit before I finally reach it. lol Milton’s writing has really opened my eyes to what good writing is. Blows my mind how someone can think the way he does and find the words to articulate it. Truly appreciate you watching my friend and stay blessed!
I can't help thinking that for all our modern cleverness we have totally forgotten what it is to be human, and that Satan really does have the upper hand right now. Wouldn't it be great if Milton could add some final books to describe our current predicament.
I am sure you have probably read it, or at least hear of it, but there is a book called Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill. Very good book that kind of mentions how Satan has infused himself into all the pleasure we consume and the task of making us immoral is just becoming easier and easier. It is an old book but it is crazy how relevant it is. But I agree, I wish Milton would have wrote a follow up essay or something explaining all his hidden items and meanings in the poem and how it relates to life. Truly appreciate you watching my friend and stay blessed!
We get our fair share here in Louisiana we just don't have beaches to watch them from. haha Hope you are enjoying the summer my friend. We need to catch up soon!
Thank you for exposing me to Milton with your beautiful narration, well edited and beautifully illustrated video. This inspires me to keep learning and exploring the classical world…. Just a question though; why wear a heavy flannel shirt? It’s mid July and I’m having a pretty hot summer. 😎
I am glad it helps inspire. Creating these videos keeps me inspired as well. I usually shoot these videos in my little Roastery late at night so the air conditioner was kicking. It’s a light flannel but I keep it pretty cool in here. Truly appreciate you watching and stay blessed my friend!
