I spent a short time on remand at HMP Birmingham in 2013. In the queue for food I noticed a sign that read "Food may have traces of Genetically Modified Organisms". I suspect they are testing this Franken-Food on prisoners who have no choice but to eat it.

Pretty similar routine everywhere. The times in the Cat Bs I was in (Lewes, Canterbury, Winchester, Highdown) were about the same, except Friday afternoon was early bang up, basically no evening association, and same at the weekend. Effectively after you collected your dinner at 5ish that was it till 9.30 the next morning, unless you went to church. The regime, naturally, is more punitive in segregation. I spent my first 4 months in Canterbury without a T.V or a radio, no work, no kettle, with association only 3 times a week...and that was the normal (Standard) regime, because you only got a T.V if you were enhanced. It was virtually 23 hour bang up and it was hard going at times. Luckily I had been transferred there with a mate from the street so we played chess, worked out, read and slept a lot. I'm glad to see you had not returned after your incarceration, as recidivism is very common...as I'm sure you know?

A thing to point out about cat B prisons is that inner city Cat B remand prisons are a strange security level in themselves. The UK sort of has 5 prison security categories instead of 4. Cat A, B remand, B, C and D going down in that order of security. While Cat A always usually deals with the nastier types Cat B remand deals with all types from serial killers to shop lifters but everyone enters as Cat B until being properly classified. The closest example is US jails but much, much higher security. In a way local remand Cat B's are very similar to Cat A prisons in that they are designed to hold the worst of the worst but usually not for to long while trying to keep safer prisoners out of harms way. I had a Category A remanded prisoner as my cell neighbour and had been in the Remand Cat B for a long time however. I'm hoping they divide the local Cat B remand prisons up into different security categories one day so the majority of prisoners are not kept under excessively restricted and monitored regimes. Keeping shoplifters surrounded by 20 foot walls, razor wire, flood lights, CCTV, and bulkheads is over the top at the best of times.

Not always the case. You can be provisional Cat A whilst on remand. This is not often done because there aren't a huge amount of prisons which can accommodate Cat A inmates, for example in the Midlands a lot of Cat A provisionals are held at Woodhill (near Milton Keynes, so quite a distance when court starts at 10am!) rather than Winson Green- the usual remand prison for Birmingham CC. Within Cat A there are even higher levels of security, usually related to escape risk (I forget the specifics- but I know Dale Cregan was held on the highest of the highest Cat A risk, due to paranoia after John Anslow's escape in 2012).

Hey jack! Just wondered about a few things, like why was the punishment system like for prisoners after they misbehaved, what was the effect on the skrews as apposed to the prisoners. Also what precautions did you take to stay out of trouble apart from attending classes and actives E.G the social aspects and relations between people be it prisoners and cops.
@JackHill1
@JackHill1 10 лет назад
Hey Josh, Ok I will break down your questions : 1. Punishment for misbehavior, I will talk about this at some point, but briefly : Your can get your status down graded to Basic (which means you get your TV removed, have lots of privaledges removed and cant work, you just get put in your cell all day - in a Cat B at least). You can also be put in the block if you fight or do anything really bad, or if your about to be shipped out and are kicking off, there are a few reasons for the block. Its solitary confinement in a smaller, less comfortable space. You have almost no social time or interaction with other people in general, its why it can be so psychologically damaging. I only know a tiny bit about the block as I never had the pleasure of frequenting it. You can also simply get 'shipped out' (be moved from one prison to another one), they can punish you by sending you to a worse prison, or higher category if your causing enough problems. Your last question is a longer one to answer, but I was basically just myself and adapted as best I could to the social red buttons and avoid them. As well as directing conversations another way if it was ever going in a dangerous direction. It didn't always work. Some people are just insane or angry in prison. Take care dude, keep up the shares and likes, I massively appreciate it :) You da boss! p.s. I want to have a go at making cartoons I think, fancy having a chat about modelling, writing, making stuff at some point? Peace dude

@mrdojob

I remember asking the screw down in the basement of the court what kind of people I'd be thrown in with at Pentonville, hoping that I'd be on some special wing for people on remand only. As if lifers were going to be the scarier of the two to be on the wing with lol. Remand is much worse than being settled.

I came across your videos today and it's cool to have an insight into the UK prision life. I like to watch Prison documentary's but they all seem to be in america and very over the top talking about people being killed and all that. So my question is can you tell us some stories about fights youve seen or 'beef' you heard about when you where in there. Was anything serious? Thanks :) keep the videos coming! :D

Hey Jack Nice videos ☺️👍 I'm facing 4-7 yay 🙄 It'll probably take a year till I start so I've got a year to save get back in the gym. So couple questions What kinda food can I buy to aid training 🙄 Are cells locked or left open once we leave them.... I'm wondering how safe personal effects are in a building full of undesirables 😯 Last question ☺️ Upon arrival how soon can I start a course say bricklaying And can I do an open university course at the same time 🤔 Any information your able to share is greatly appreciated 🙂👍 Many thanks Ted

My advice: 1. On day one go up to the biggest toughest guy in the prison. Get on your knees and immediately start giving him a BJ to show submission this will earn you respect. 2. When using toilet in a cell with a cellmate make eye contact the whole time and smile. 3. Make sure to slap the arses of the prison officers they will love that. Good luck!

Hi jack! Nice name dude First off want to say thanks. Only seen up to this point of your videos now and you've helped me a lot. Been struggling with my degree recently (2nd year) and been down. And you've shown me that if you can do it while inside a jail cell, I can do it from the comfort of my own home (or as comfy as my student accommodation can be) so thanks a lot mate. Anyway my question - did you often encounter people who struggled with life in prison? Crying every day, begging with the guards etc? I don't know why but I can imagine for people not used to be locked up, it would be such a shock being inside! Thanks for the uploads they're very informative Jack
@JackHill1
@JackHill1 9 лет назад
Jack J Hey dude, you have a fantastic name ;) I'm really happy that I could influence your university experience in a positive way and you found some perspective in my prison experiences. Great question, yes there were people like that (maybe not crying every day), but certainly people who struggled, but humans are incredibly adaptive, and rarely do people stay in that condition for the entirety of their sentence. It's a good question though, I'm tempted to do a full video on "The Worst Reactions to Prison" or something similar. Thoughts? :)

+Jack Hill hey once again Mr man with a great name! I passed second year and am track to getting my degree with flying colours, so thanks again! might not seem like much but you really put it into perspective, so thanks! to your question. I think a 'worst reaction to prison' video would be great! as I said, I can imagine some people just breaking down, I know I would! I'd really enjoy that video to be honest... and seeing how prisoners you met/know reacted to being 'banged' up! Apologies for the late reply. I didn't get a notification -.-

Sorry Jack but out of date now. I was in cat b for 21/2 years - no breakfast just 'breakfast packs'. Banged up 23 hours a day except for lunch, tea a lot of the time. Didn't even have enough jobs to keep people occupied. Things seem to have gone down significantly since your days. The only bright times were visits and books (if you can read that is). Education cut to the bone - basic maths and English - no art, music or poetry (at least where I was).

Do the other inmates know what you were sent down for? Or do they only go off what you tell them unless it's reported in the press? Might be a daft question but you say there's a sort of hierarchy based upon what your offence is. However what's to stop someone in for say, fraud or some white collar shit making out he's the latest mcvicar. Dumb question I know but curiousity begs me to ask
@joshuabradbury431
@joshuabradbury431 7 лет назад
People convicted of fraud would probably not be in a Cat B holding prison for very long for a start. Unless they have previous drug or violent offences they would be earmarked for an open prison as soon as possible. At any rate, I don't know where fraudsters rank in the prison heirachy (anecdotally armed robbers are at the top and, obviously, sex offenders are at the bottom) but I suspect it would have to do with the scale of their offending; I know the LIBOR fraudster was writing letters saying he was getting a lot of attention in Wandsworth due to a [fictitious] rumour that he had made a trillion £ out of it.

Hello Jack, ill be going to prison for robbery soon so i will definitely be going to Cat B, the only thing is im a huge heavy metal fan and im pretty sure that most people in prison will think it's noise or whatever or think im a satanist for listening to it, Is their any point of taking some metal CD's in? Will there ever be times where my cellmate is out for a little while where i can just sit back and listen to it quietly?
@mrdojob
@mrdojob 9 лет назад
Unfortunately I think you might have some difficulty with both taking CD's in and being able to listen to them on your own. It depends on the prison though. My cell mate asked for his CD's and was unable to get them because of some security risk bollocks and that was in a cat B. Best bet would be to take them with you at sentencing and ask while the go through your stuff. You'll also need to get a prison radio but they seemed to be pretty common.
@prophetascending9021
@prophetascending9021 9 лет назад
If you are banged up with someone already settled they will likely work or go to education so you will have time on your own till you yourself start work. If you are both new bods then it will be a case of flexibility...though as mrdojob said you may have to find out if you can take them for definite or they will just go in your property and you won't get them. However, many prison libraries allow you to borrow DVDs, CDs etc...or order them from other prisons if they don't have it.

Hi Jack - Very interested in your vid's. I will be going to prison myself in a few months for growing cannabis. I am 52 and this will be my first time in prison and hope you can answer a few questions for me. 1, If you know your going to prison when you go to court, should you take a bag of things that you might need in prison with you; such as clothes and toiletries. If so could you give me a comprehensive list of the items that you think I should take. 2, What personal possessions can you have in side; i.e. nail clippers/file, writing pad & pens, etc. 3, Do you wear your own underwear and footwear or are these prison issue. 4, Is there a lot of theft of personal possessions out of the cells and also trouble caused between inmates because of possessions and would you advise keeping possessions to a minimum.
@JackHill1
@JackHill1 10 лет назад
Hey David Churchill . Thanks for your comments. 1. Depending on what country your in, different prison systems and prisons will allow you to take in certain things and have certain things in your possession. Your best off speaking with your solicitor about what you are allowed. I would recommend some good books, some writing pads, sudoku books. 2. Its dependant on the prison of course, but you were allowed a finite amount of things, so 1 radio or cd player, a certain amount of t-shirts, I think 12. You can have nail clippers. You can get Bic razors as well. Only 3 or 4 sets of footwear. etc etc. 3. You wear your own underwear and socks, but if your at a HMP you will probably wear work clothes during the day. Which will be prison issue. Could be green jeans and whatever colour tops. I saw a lot of green jeans inside. Also, if you are running out of your own clothes or don't have any. 4. I wouldn't say there is "a lot", but prison theft is common. Well, I would advise to consider the value of your personal belongings. If you have lots of incredibly expensive clothes and haven't been to prison before, I would probably choose a different set of clothes to take. It depends on how you want to represent yourself in prison. There was fights over possessions, but only over theft. On some wings there is a wing understanding that everyone persecutes the thieves, this stops thieves for the most part - but not all wings are like that. I was lucky enough to be on a few like that and know some big guys. I hope that answered some of your questions. good luck with your stretch dude, you probably wont get any problems :) Just keep your head down and remember that they can lock the lock but they cant stop the clock :) Peace

I been in prison not so long ago and I would recomend above all others keeping some money in your pocked during sentencing which will get put on your prison account. Most of the stuff I took in got taken off me including clothes and deodorants. I would take like £20 with you until you can get someone to send a postal order with more money to you.

As long as you make sure you have it put in your account it will be available for you at your first canteen...though you may only be able to spend a small amount, depending on your circumstances. I believe remand prisoners can spend what they want, so you could max out and spend it all. Convicted, however, is a lot less...maybe £7-10 plus any wages you get from education or work (which won't apply to you initially). My advice is if you smoke get plenty of snout, as it is "double bubble" (pay back double) to borrow baccy. It can quickly wipe you out if you don't keep it in check. Otherwise toiletries and/or food treats are the usual suspects when you first arrive. Be wary of being scrounging. It is okay to help someone occasionally, but don't leave yourself short. Be too stingy and you might piss people off, but be too generous and you could run out before next canteen and then you are having to scrounge. The day before canteen everyone, nearly everyone, is on the arse with no baccy...so try not to show it off on that day as you will be swamped by desperate nicotine addicts. Anyway, just thought I'd reach out and hope you don't need this information anyway...

+Somer Taylor-Haines That may or may not be the case, it still seems a little sentence for his crime, I'm glad he only did a short stint, I have known people to do far less for their first crime and get a higher sentence. All cases are individual, but when you get a lad defending his gf and her friend from a gang of idiots, and that person gets IPP, the most unjust sentencing ever, it truly beggers belief, hence why I'm interested in this person's case.

Thanks for all the info provided! You're a star mate ! I might end up in prison for an assault charge even if i only and exclusively acted in self defence as i was attacked with a knife; long story, but in a few words i "woke up" at the police station with an assault charge because i exaggerated with my self defence ending up wounding the guy. I was release on Bail and have to "surrender to police station" in three weeks. What does that mean? Will i go straight to prison ? Do i have to explicitly press charges against that guy or was it enough to tell police what happen and automatically they will do everything ? First statement at hospital i told what happened. At the police station on record i was advised by the solicitor to only say that i acted in self defence and "no comment" to all the other questions, which i did, but now i doubt it was the best thing to do as i wasted the opportunity to tell my side of the story and explain what happened, as from outside it may seem that i was the one that attacked him, even if my wounds are clearly defensive. At this point ill get a solicitor. Like always in life so far i'm fking unlucky, all odds against me. Never had problems with the law, never ever, does this count? I mean, it has to, i think, have a positive impact on the final outcome. If you have time and can please give me a bit of advice; i'm losing my mind and can't actually believe this is happening to me, that self defence could lead me to possible life imprisonment; in that moment i couldn't think straight and not react. I was just afraid and that pushed me to wound him after i managed to disarm him., which scared him off when he realised he was injured. Also there was no place to run away as he was standing between me and the door. Thanks for taking the time to read this (if you did) and thanks for anything you will advise me (or anyone else that reads and can help me with a piece of advice or anything, i'm simply desperate) Can you advise anything regarding the matter? Cos i'm facing a serious charge of which i'm only guilty for defending my life at all cost, maybe a bit too much but only because i was so scared that i thought i was about to die and did everything i could not to. In any case great job with the videos, it's a pleasure listening to you. Wish you a nice weekend! Take care ! Wish you all guys (whoever reads this) a nice weekend! Stay outta trouble! And if you're assaulted, take the hit because if you fight back you'll end up like me, facing a GBH charge And i'm absolutely not a fighter, i'm just fast. And on one side i'm lucky to be alive. Injured but alive. On the other hand it's messed up that things are going sideways like this. And i have no experience with Law, solicitors and these things, so i really don't know what to do. I will get a solicitor and hopefully everything should be ok. Thanks y'all! Bless ya!

Hey diamondRings1 :) I have done ok so far, but it has limited my future options and it is still an issue if I get contractual office style jobs or jobs that do CRB checks (I'm in an office job where I had to explain myself, luckily it was a friend who got me the job, so I had a good recommendation to back me up and hence got the job :) . I have to declare it whilst im on license. I am hoping to do more freelance stuff with production work and various other little projects to go self employed again. I enjoy that freedom :) How are you doing? Thanks for the comments.

lol - indeed- besides the lack of personal freedom, privacy, no control over your life, risk of violence, and little potential for any kind of career progression or financial stability. The guitar was un-expectedly awesome though I agree :-)

5a1tY When in jail you can't "play music/read all day" very few jails have facilities for any music at all and whilst you're on remand the libraries often have a limit on the number of books you can take at any one time (four or five for the week). Jail is not good my friend. You are away from family and friends. There is a lot of bullying. A high percentage of prisoners have mental health problems. If you do have a problem then you can't get away from it. Then when you come out everyone you know has moved on with their lives.
