The only things us kiwis can hunt are all introduced 🤣🤣 the only natives we have are birds that are pretty harmless. No bears, no snakes, no mountain lions, no poisonous spiders/insects... the most dangerous thing is an angry pig or slipping down a bank

They are way overpopulated, an invasive & very destructive pest that is also valued by hunters.

Other sources can provide some facts before expressing strong opinions, repeating fabrications or ignorance isn't complimentary. There is a management plan for the species, mismanaged by most involved given the population has risen from the nominal 10,000 (there are specific area levels) in 1994 to between 30 & maybe 50 000. Shows most hunters are way out of their depth, not wanting'/able to contribute usefully. Misinformation by either liars or incompetents prevails, with extremist agenda influence from both environmental protection and hunting groups. Culling operators self interest (& egos) has contributed to the failure to meet the plan's standards (3-5x excess population isn't success, and their efforts have caused other major problems). Unlikely to change much either, egos and hunting can easily go hand in hand whether professional or recreational without sound oversight. Much room for improvement exists. And speculation, using selective information that is wildly inaccurate doesn't help. The culls are mostly leaving the trophy bulls except in the highest environmental valued areas, so those who will get off their snatch have plenty of scope. And you don't need a licence in NZ, just a free permit (or owners consent for private land) and firearms licence.

Simply asked if selling hunts at an affordable rate would help with population control and repairing habitat, as well as create local employment and revenue in local communities. As well I expressed that having a cull operation in the area you flew into Hunt would be very upsetting ( for the hunter ). Most of what I know of NZ hunting has come from videos produced by hunters from NZ and Australia hunting there so if I got my facts wrong you’ll have to take that up with the producers of these videos. So no speculation just repeating what has been produced by your fellow country men. Hell I’ve even seen Canadian Geese being shot in NZ with high power rifles. ( as they are a evasive species ). In Canada 🇨🇦 that is highly illegal and will land your ass in jail. Different laws different countries. So that’s why I asked. As well common sense tells us when you release animals into a food rich environment with no means of population control other then man the population is going to explode as man has a way of screwing shit up. I have seen examples of this here in my own country with the introduction of Moose into NFLD where there numbers are 3 to 1 moose population vs human population. Studies have shown that eventually there numbers will drop due to destruction of there own environment and food source. In other words they will starve to death. The same fate of death by starvation has already hit our woodland caribou population as they follow the same migration paths year after year and there food source takes decades to replenish itself and much has been destroyed by logging and oilfield production. We also have our own cull operations to control CWD however these are carried out in the off hunting season ( as we have set seasons to hunt ) and are performed based on head submissions sent in by hunters for testing. You call others ignorant when it’s your own ignorance that has lead to the release and over population of evasive animal populations as most all game was introduced to NZ and not native to your island. 😂😂. Yes our moose is native to Canada but was never native to the island of NFLD. It was introduced, left to populate with no natural predators ( all had been killed off in NFLD many years before ) by the time man stepped back into the pitcher the damage was already done. As is usually the case nothing is done till someone calls you out on the miss management. Now we hunt and eat them and sell expensive hunts to Americans that are interested in nothing more then a head to hang on there wall and bragging rights to a mostly BS story they tell there friends back home. 😂😂. Honestly my only concern would be for the hunter having his hunt destroyed by a cull operation. That’s ignorance at its highest level. Good day mate. 😂😂😂

Introduced mammals cause various environmental problems in NZ. Professional hunters were employed since protection was removed when the pest status of these pests was recognised (1930s) and hunters couldn't control their numbers. In the 1960s wild animal recovery for game meat export was developed (buy NZ venison!! it's eco friendly and quality), and this became lucrative and like the wild west due to open competition for the animals. Helicopters were introduced to access remote places and rapidly became used for shooting platforms and recovering the carcasses. And the pests (now valuable) were significantly reduced. The tahr favoured high open country, and were susceptible to this, being reduced dramatically (finding one was difficult in many places in the early 1980s). Those markets are limited now, and the Conservation authority (DoC) again use helicopters to reduce the numbers (hunters don't do this, how many videos can you find of most tahr seen being shot). Tahr can keep out of sight well, so when most hunters can even find them plenty exist, and they have been made warier by amateur shooters (including most aerial cullers and trophy hunters) doing their best. There is a Thar control plan (Department of Conservation website), it's failed to date and cost $millions and enabled tahr to devastate alpine vegetation in many areas.
