Episode 3 of my SOBO thru hike of the Pacific Crest Trail takes me through 108 miles of a mixture of old growth forests and stunning alpine here in Washington state. This is the first section I've hiked with new trail friends and I have a wonderful time experiencing social connection on trail.
On one of my favourite days so far I am moved to tears by the beauty of the alpine meadow. And then this day shows me how quickly I can experience highs and then lows on trail when my left knee starts to really bother me on my final descent of the day.
My goal is always to share as much of the authentic experience as I can, so I hope you enjoy riding the rollercoaster ride with me!
Thank you for joining me on this section of the pacific Crest Trail from Stehekin to Stevens Pass!

Opened up this video about an hour after you posted it and it already had 350+ views and 60+ likes. The ratio of likes to views is about double for an average RU-vid video and I think that reflects just how well you've adapted your long form video content. The time, effort and quality of these videos and your willingness to openly discuss the highs and lows as you experience them is really striking a cord with viewers. Well done and can't wait for your next creation!

Enjoying your videos so much, loved watching you everyday while you were hiking, too. You are so talented, the videos are very well produced, love the music you use. We live in the PNW and hiked a lot when we first arrived 16 years ago. Although age has slowed us down a bit, your videos are the “push” we need to get out there this summer. Watching your beautiful videos reminds me of how grateful I am to live in one of the most beautiful places on this earth. You are AMAZING!!!

So awesome that you were so overcome with emotion in Glacier Peak Wilderness! That is, for me, the best wilderness area in WA State. I had a very similar crying experience as I climbed Glacier Peak a couple years ago. Mountain goats are my favorite animal! Excited for your next episode!

This episode was special for me. I climbed Glacier Peak in mid July of 2023 and crossed the PCT at White Pass (I think that was the name) and it was the most beautiful alpine meadow I have seen. It is fun to see the different views of Glacier Peak. Climbing it it seems we hiked forever before seeing it where you seemingly saw it up close for a while. I love the format. I will do WA and OR PCT sometime soon I hope.

This was an epic hike! You can tell you are a very creative and artistic person in how you film, the views you capture, and how you approach the project. The episode format is excellent. I teared up when you were, I'm sure film cannot do justice to the actual scenery. Oh, by the way, I love your studio apartment! Anxious to see the next episode!

You actually did the trail one and a half times. By the time you set up your camera and go back to get it! Thats a lot of extra work and it's such a treat to see it all. Those massive trees would have been tooo hard for me to leave. I miss Washington so much. Moved to the Dakotas for love many years ag but this trees have never left my soul. This was moving. Ty

I too was going to say, can we appreciate the back tracking to set up or retrieve the camera for some of your walking shots! It’s a lot extra but it is very appreciated. I too, find descent harder on the knees and feet than climbing. I don’t do thru hikes, but I day hike.

Last summer I heard countless beetle killed spruce coming down in the woods all around me on a rainy weekend camping trip. I saw about ten of them fall. It was nuts! The trees have been dead for about 6 years and are getting pretty rotten. Now any rain or wind storm brings many of them down. Most are small but there are some mid size ones.

As always, great video. I have one small suggestion: Maybe, if possible, you could also include the ascent/descent per day in your videos besides the distance? I always wonder about that, since 20 miles with 200 meter ascent is so much different from 20 miles with 1200 meter ascent. Greetings from Germany!
@KrystaNorwick
@KrystaNorwick 5 месяцев назад
Glad you enjoyed!! That's a good suggestion! I will try to document that for next time. I didn't keep a record of it on this hike unfortunately. But I do start talking about elevation changes quite a bit once I hit the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Just want to leave you a comment about your “later than others” morning times. No doubt, there are others who are not the 0-dark-:30 types that HAVE to set a early alarm and bolt outa’ camp like a lion-flushed gazelle. This is a early episode so I am curious (as you mention of yourself) if your morning schedule evolves because simply put, there are always later-goers out there and that’s just fine. You seemed to be covering the ground you’d hoped to.

Very interesting watching your SOBO. I noticed in your gear video, you mentioned 25 lbs total with food for two days and water. Wonder what impact that extra weight had on your knees. Also interesting you were carrying more food than you needed, so that could’ve been an easy fix (which I assume you adjusted as you go forward). I’m sure you’ll give us more gear reviews/insight, but always looking for how i can cut pack weight so wondering what changes we’ll see there. About the knees…downhill walking form is tricky and proper use of poles is tricky. I don’t think I’m optimal the way i do it, but something to be mindful of. Also, you mentioned toe blisters - any blister tends to alter how you walk, and that can contribute to knee pain or shin splints and other issues. Wonder how that developed. 1) What’s the average # of days of food carry you needed ? (‘Need’, not ‘have’ - just wondering for myself, if i do about the same miles per day as you). 2) what’s the max # of days of food carry you needed for the whole trip? Very nice footage and insight into the trail. Look forward to the rest of the series.

Great questions!! I am definitely not an ultralight hiker, but I did lighten up some things along the way. I hope to go lighter next hike I do. It's a work in progress for me. And yes I did adapt how much food I carried as I went and learned my eating habits. The number of days per carry ranged from 2-7 days, so it fluctuated a lot.
