8 EASY Solutions for Mealy Bugs! | How to Get Rid of Mealy Bugs on Houseplants!
Today I talk about 8 methods for getting rid of & killing mealy bug infestations from indoor plants. Mealybugs can really harm houseplants because they suck sap from plant leaves, stems, & roots which can cause dehydration & a lack of energy in the plant.

I spritz my plants weekly with 91% rubbing alcohol weekly and have never had a pest! My grandpa owned a nursery and taught me this. We spray the greenhouse as well! Mealy bugs attack the roots too. Those you wont know they are there until it's too late. You need to uproot your succulents and inspect the roots. If you don't see any, you're ok. However, if they are on the roots, just cut the roots off and keep cutting until you see only healthy flesh. Then let the plant air out and callous over. Then wash the pot really well with soap and water, and then repot with fresh dirt. The plant will re-root & be fine.

Thank you for this video! I am relatively new to owning succulents (about a year ago I bought my first one) and a couple months ago I noticed one of my succulents had little white specs on it and idk why I just ignored it, and only now after that plant is doing terribly did I think that the white specs could be the problem. I googled it and it said to look under the leaves and oh my god, they are EVERYWHERE! And now all 10 of my other succulents have them too because they all shared an outdoor table. I just bought Garden Safe insecticidal soap and drenched all of them, so fingers crossed they will go away after a couple more weeks of treatment!

Just an FYI for the dust: it is ruined by water. You have to re-apply if it gets wet. Also a side note: if you have any ants in your home you need to exterminate them as well: they carry the mealys from plant to plant. spreading an infestation. If you release predatory bugs, the ants will defend them from those bugs.

I have introduced beneficial insects into my home. Because I have so many large plants and trees that are difficult to place in the shower, this has been the most effective method. I spray with neem and then the following week release the bugs.
@HarliG
@HarliG 4 года назад
I’ve really been wanting to try beneficial insects more frequently in my home. Maybe every 6 months or so? The one thing I dislike about it is finding dead bugs once their life cycle ends. Do you have roommates? How do they feel about it?

Harli G I live with my SO and he was not sure what to think before I started but now he’s totally fine with it. I have a cordless vacuum that I go around the house with often, sometimes daily, and clean up after the bugs, plants like the ferns, and my two huskies. Honestly, compared to the huskies and the ferns, the bugs aren’t so bad.

I got a new plant almost 2 weeks ago... and didn't water it until 2 days ago. Yesterday I found a random mealy on a leaf. I found another tiny one in a sheath covering... but that's all I found. Then looked later that day and found spider mite webbing close to the soil! I've never had either of these pests.... Will a hydrogen peroxide rinse take care of both of them? I was also wondering if I need the plant to dry out again before doing that, or if it's ok to do the flush now. I hope someone sees this and can help!

I just recently got mealy bugs on my succulents outside in a oblong planter pot...I've never had them before...one day I went outside on my balcony just to check on the plants and I seen this white stuff I said to myself what is this...so I got my tweezers because they were in the crevices of the succulents flowers buds and took one out... Again I said what is this and there was also sticky stuff on the leaves. I went to the computer to check what pests looked like that and it was a mealy. I was freaking out I started spraying with neem oil over the place. Then I didn't see them going away so I sprayed again and again. Now I told my husband throw them to dumpster...especially if they are spreading. I was checking more about them and found this page and it really helps me understand more about them.

Hi Harli, great video, I have only had mealy bugs a very long time ago, and to be honest with you, I don't know what causes them, I have noticed that if I keep my plants from getting too wet then I have a less chance of those pests. My best friend had mealy bugs on her Schefflera and sent the plant home with me to get rid of them, and I used the Q-tip and rubbing alcohol method, and then I hosed the plant down outside and then kept a close eye on the plant for a couple of weeks or so, I had another larger Schefflera that really enjoyed this smaller ones company. When it was healthy and putting out new growth I gave the plant back to her. I have that plant now and it's doing great, and the reason I have it is another story, that we talked about when we meant in Utah, Thanks Harli for all of the great solutions to getting rid of these little buggers, I just never realized there were so many things to use. I hope you have an awesome week and I will see you soon, bye for now.

I found mealybugs on almost all of my pothos (and a few other plants) about a week ago and quarantined the infested plants right away. I’ve been pretty diligent about inspecting the infested plants at least twice a day, and I’ve been spraying them with just water focusing mostly on the stem joints, because that’s where I’ve found the most bugs/eggs. I think the combination of picking off the visible bugs and eggs and spraying water has been super effective because mealybugs won’t like humidity. Also from what I understand, male mealybugs don’t look anything like the females. They basically just look like fruit flies. Looking back, I could’ve caught the infestation a few weeks sooner had I known that the bugs flying around my house weren’t fruit flies lol.
@HarliG

Thankfully it was a baby plant and I hadn't put him in by my other plants. I mixed Dawn dish soap to water combo to spray the leaves and also the Alcohol q-tip method I think I found ten total on it in 2 days. When I found no more I also did a hydrogen peroxide / water rinse through on it's soil just to treat the soil and let it dry out and watched it for two weeks just to make sure everything was dead before I replanted it. Never tried neem oil but I wonder if I should pick some up just to have onhand. :)

I just saw one of those bugs in my croton pictum plant but only one I picked it off with tweezers I use for my fish tank and came here to see what to do. Ugh does this mean I have babies if I found a single one 🙄

Awesome video and hoping this isnt an issue I face anytime soon. I've dealt with them small scale but my issue has always been with spidermites, they're so annoying to get rid of.

I know it’s considered gauche among houseplant people to use insecticides, but systemic houseplant insecticides work really well. If you only use them on plants you won’t be putting outside, they won’t hurt any beneficial insects and imidacloprid in particular is very safe for humans. It’s the active ingredient in K9 advantix. You can buy it in granular form so there’s no messy spray or dust to inhale. Mix it into your plant’s soil. Or if it’s not time to repot, just scratch a little bit of it into the top couple inches of your plant’s soil. The plant’s roots will absorb it when you water and any bugs that try to feed on your plant will die. It will not work on spider mites. Those are a special kind of evil. It works on aphids, mealies, scale, thrips, most bugs that are a problem for houseplants.

I'm glad you said this. I know it's not an option for everyone (I totally get being wary if you have kids or pets that might nibble/handle treated plants) but I'm beginning to think the thrips I've been battling have become resistant to the neem oil solution I use. It still kills on contact of course, but it's just not having the long-term effects I'm used to seeing with neem treatments. At the very least, it's good to know that if I run out of other options there is something else to try.
@Rena-ej7vv
@Rena-ej7vv 4 года назад
Primal in Pink I highly recommend it if the plants are not edible and won't be living outside or within reach of pets and kids. It's a tidy process and the granules last for a month or two so the bugs go through several life cycles while the treatment is still effective. I still use neem sprays and an organic miticide spray that's safe on edibles, but some plants are magnets and are really difficult to clean. I hate using sprays that ruin the farina on my succulents so the granules keep them healthy and looking good.

Thrips will kill a plant fast . Rinse the plant every 3 days . And use plant spray or a soap rinse. I use Ivory bar soap because it really is soap and won’t burn the leaves like a beauty bar or detergents do

I have one question I can't find the answer to on google ... How far away should you isolate a plant with mealy bugs or pests ? If they are like in the same room but on the opposite side of the room (5-6meters) is it enough or not ? So afraid for my other plants :(

I have noticed this white fuzzy stuff growing all over my Kalanchoe for the last month or so. I didn't have a clue what it was. I kept researching and finally came across the words 'Mealybugs! I have ordered some Isopropyl Alcohol, so will treat the plant with that when it arrives. All the leaves are wilting, so it's not in good shape at all! Is there a chance it can be saved or does it sound like it's at the point of no return?

I like Southern Ag Triple-Action Neem Oil. All my plants get a dose soon as I bring them home. When new leaves stout they get a watering with the neem. It helps with fungal disease and pest control. Smelly kinda but I works and safe for bees and even can use on orchids.

I think it’s smelly too! A lot of people tell me they think it smells nice though 😋 that’s smart to just give them a dose of it upon first bringing them home! I may have to start doing that.
