There are 8 essential books for building business systems that I find myself recommending again and again to business owners, ops managers, and systems service providers who are looking to build business systems.

Rather than just reading you what could be a blog post, I'll also give you my "two cents" on why the best business books in this category are still not perfect. I'll share:
#1 - What is each book about? (I'll give you the "long story short" version.)
#2 - What is imperfect about each book? (We've all read "those" business books. I'll try to warn you about the less-than-perfect aspects of each of my favorite books to help you decide before you buy.)
#3 - Which should you read next? (I'll share when in your journey should you read this book. There's an easier order of operations than what I originally did!)

I have run large factories, and processes are everything - the book The Goal changed my life when it came out. This list and video materially elevated you in my mind from a skilled process thinker to someone deep in your craft. Your other videos are great; I watch them all. But this one shared how you are a student of business processes and demonstrated you know the history of this craft: a big thumbs up and my deep respect.

As a bookkeeper, one of my first business books was profit first which lead me through all of mike michalowicz including clockwork. I loved the idea. Since reading about 18 business books since (one a month) I have learned and grown a lot since. September through December of 2022 I am focusing emyth revisited, emyth bookkeeper, and systemology. I want to focus and do the work! I'm going to put Boss Life on my list for January!

Just finished Boss Life this morning which I absolutely loved. I was getting into the story at some points, thinking the helper they had to let go must have stolen their bank account logins or something when Paul was having trouble accessing their accounts! My business I very different from Paul's, but I did love his realisations about ignoring certain departments because the people in them are too hard to deal with, or just trusting that someone will know what to do. I've managed people before when working in corporate jobs and I could totally relate. Don't manage anyone but myself now, but that will change soon. Just started Built To Sell this afternoon. I'm not enjoying it as much, it's very simple and maybe a bit waa-waa for me(your term, just guessing what you mean by it :P). But I do think some of the lessons around scalability and productising are worth reinforcing. I'm not sure how much we can or should productise our business, but if we at least systemise it further it is easier to scale beyond the two of us.

Loved this Layla, thank you. I liked Profit First and the 12 week year. They aren't process but they are business books. I would love to know your thoughts on these two books actually. I'm trying out the 12 week year and think it's a really good concept 👌
