8 Great Hikes near Page, Arizona
We love northern Arizona. One of our favorite places to go is Page, Arizona. There are so many things to see up there. We've been going for years, and I don't feel like we've even scratched the surface.
Anyway, I get a lot of questions based on locations rather than specific hikes, so I wanted to start putting together some videos highlighting cool things to see in different areas. Page, AZ immediately came to mind.

Yes, I had to mention Antelope Canyon. Personally, I feel that Buckskin Gulch or even Waterholes Canyon are better alternatives though. But you can be the judge.

Jerry, thanks for your accurate description of trails and hikes. You are the real deal. I too am an avid hiker of the canyons in the SW (even though I live in Ohio). I've done all on this video except Spencer and Waterholes. The first two times i went to Horseshoe Bend, there was just a pull off the road and make your way thru the scrub brush over to the canyon rim. When I took my kids the last time, I was shocked by the parking lot, pay kiosks, paved sidewalks and crowds. Unfortunately, it's all due to the internet. It's a blessing and a curse. I hope to run into you on the trail some day. I'm heading to Moab in a few weeks for my 13th trip there. These hikes never get old. Keep up the good reporting and I'll keep taking notes from your videos. Thanks again.

Omg, Thank you Jerry I am 74, I hiked Mt. Everest base camp on my 72nd birthday but been stuck ever since bc. Covid. Now I feel I have no time to waiting around for anything positive for better out come with this pandemic, I decided to move on with in country hiking trips. I am grateful for your efforts to share your experiences with people like me as desperado, as I am getting older.... I been researching where I want to go next since my last trip to few spots in Easter Sierra, The Valley of Fire, Mt. Charleston, Death Valley and Salton Sea before new years, and I found your video, I said lucky me!!!

COVID definitely ruined some of our plans, but we still get out there. Luckily, there is plenty to do within driving distance of home for us. Everest Base Camp must have been amazing.

@@JerryArizona Yes, Mt. Everest was most beautiful place I ever been. It took 5 months gym training and hiking few local mountains near me plus plenty of researching for altitude sickness. I went alone and only hired a guide/porter for my back pack, whole trip took 8 days up, 5 days down. It was one of my most proud achievement and high of my life.

Valley of Fire is Awesome plenty of interesting places for photos as is Death Valley. If you are not afraid of the heat summer is great since the heat keeps people away but still some tour busses at the popular spots. If you have a 4X4 places like The Race Track and Eureka Sand Dunes are a must see. Also check out Escalante so much to see/hike there I have friends that own a resort there Wild West Retreat that is very reasonably priced but if you camp there are a lot of places to camp along Hole in the Rock Road

Great video. My wife and I backpacked Buckskin Gulch in 1989 and it's one of the highlights of my backpacking experiences. I've hiked other slot canyons, but Buckskin is in a league of its own. There had been a flash flood through the canyon two days before so we had to wade through many opaque pools. The variety of shapes of the canyon walls is astonishing. They range from the swoopy curvy shapes that overhang so much you can't see the sky above, to vertical flat faces that go straight up all the way to the rim. There was a vertical drop off that required belaying down to get past. I wonder if that's still there. The entire last mile and a half was under water because of the flash flood and there was quick sand in places which made things interesting. We continued down Pariah Canyon for two days and then hiked back out by Pariah Canyon to Hwy 89 and hitched a ride back to the Wire Pass trailhead. Fantastic experience. It's a shame about Antelope Canyon. We were there in 1988 and there were no permits and no guides. We had the canyon entirely to ourselves.

The drop was probably the "Rabbit Hole" area, about a mile before the campsites. We've backpacked Buckskin several times and it's one of our favorite trips. So many people are like "I went a mile in and got a feel for it." No. You didn't. It's mind blowing. Glad you got to experience it.

My back yard trails. Spencer trail is my favorite but not in the summer heat. Jackass canyon is also a favorite especially when we were kids. I no longer go to the horseshoe bend. And buckskin gulch and Paria is one of many on our list.

I did Paria Canyon /Buckskin Gulch I think in 1989. I saw one photo of the Narrows in Paria Canyon in Backpacker Mag. and I was hooked I wanted to go there. Spent 5 days there. No permits then. saw 2 people on the 1st day and a boy scout troop on the 5th day. Amazing trip.

Thanks! There is so much to do in that area. I purposefully left out a bunch of places up there because they aren't as well known and/or aren't protected by permits, but if you look around, you can find them. Hole in the Rock road is also a solid option relatively nearby. We went back up here recently and stayed at Under Canvas outside Page and that was a unique and interesting experience as well. Crazy that the lake is so low you can walk to Lone Rock now....

I was in Page, and did the kayaking to the Antelope canyons... it was really amazing experience, up until all of the boats got on the lake. The waves were just absolutely crazy and made it extremely difficult to kayak. Horseshoe Bend is a tourist trap!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Page a few years ago to visit Antelope Canyon. When I saw how insanely crowded it was and saw the mode of transport to the canyon and back on extremely dusty roads, I just left. I drove on to the next national park that I visited. I'll be going again soon, and am very grateful for this excellent video. I will definitely be spending some time in that area this time around. I highly recommend checking out the Mystical Canyon Antelope Canyon. Very private tour and worth every cent. We were the only ones in the canyon when we hiked it. There are about eleven ladders! I've also hiked Lower AC and Mystical is my favorite! Just amazing! Tell Roseann Wendy sent you! Oh thanks for the alcove info at Toadstools. Did that twice and didn't know about it. Also Cottonwood Canyon Road is very cool and the Cottonwood Narrows. Our last trip we discovered Catstair Canyon- a short and easy hike to a spot where they put old cars to help hold up the road (just past House Rock Valley Road) and just past this there's a short hike to some awesome petroglyphs! I love this area!

I was born and raised in Page. It's honestly sad to see these places being overcrowded nowadays. About 10 years ago I used to walk my dog to Horseshoe Bend and there would only be 5 vehicles in the parking lot. Now everywhere you go in Page there are tour buses. I fish Lee's Ferry alot too and I noticed theres lots of kayakers now. It's just mindblowing how things have changed, just look at Zion National Park now... that place is a mess haha. Antelope Canyon is something locals avoid now...haha

It's definitely crowded out there. I blame social med....oh. Wait. But I left several places off this specifically because a) they aren't protected by permits and b) I'd like to continue to enjoy them in solitude. Trying to be a little more careful when sharing. We just found several new, awesome and empty places up there a month or so ago, and they didn't make this (or any other) videos.

well , i made my debut on spencer trail ! beautiful drive in there and the campground looked nice, not very busy in early march . weather was sunny low 50s, good for hiking . i am an old runner and still fit, was not bothered by the exposure. but, i must admit i was looking for the top like the finish line in a race ! its a grunt ! but the views looking over colorado river and page are worth it. drove back over to cathedral wash with my 8 mos old border collie. he was on leash and when we got to the canyon spot where your 30 ft up, i had to turn around. the pup on a leash going through that spot would have been dangerous . i have driven by lees ferry many times leavin page and heading to fountain hills are to camp. i would not have stopped if i didnt see your video, thanks ! tommy montana

I would recommend doing Canyon X tours instead of Antelope if you hate crowds, like I do. I did a photo tour in Canyon X 3 years ago, and it was 3 hours for 4 of us to go through the 2 different canyons there. It is the same canyon system as Antelope, so similar pics, just way less crowded. There was about 10 minutes of mass chaos when they brought in a normal tour into the canyon, but other than that, we had the entire canyon to ourselves. I love the Page area and can't wait to go back someday.

Yeah, I haven't been to Canyon X yet, but keep getting recommendations about it. Personally I prefer technical canyons for real solitude. (Not to mention amazing scenery and a nice adrenaline boost.)

Glad I did Antelope canyon and Horsehoe Bend in 2014 and 2018 when they weren't so busy and "improved". Both times were in Feb and neither place was busy and it was easy to get a ticket for Antelope with only 1 group in the slot at a time. Now it sounds oversold and annoyingly crowded.

Having now done upper Antelope, I agree. That and Horseshoe Bend are definitely crowded. Worth a stop off, but not an entire trip to Page for me.

I hiked in and down to the confluence and back in a day, no permit required. It was a long day as started before sunrise and back as sun was setting but doable. I did it in March.

Another great video! Regarding Antelope Canyon: There's North and South Antelope - they're two separate tours. The North is more expensive and arguably more dramatic. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a Disneyland experience regarding crowds. There was/maybe is an exception to this ..maybe. Prior to Covid you could book what was called the photography tour. It was more expensive but the numbers of people was excellent. It did require that you carried a tripod. I'm not seeing this as an advertised option now but it's something worth looking into. Both slots are amazing.

I heard they recently stopped doing the photography tours. I think they just make more money cramming larger tours in, unfortunately.

So ironic that the upper Antelope canyon was a big party place back in high school. You could hike anytime you wanted as long as you had a decent 4x4. I remember hiking the lower end but you had to bring your own ropes before they installed the ladders. Page was a wonderful place to grow up in.

Some others I would add on the list (I know you like to research so if you haven't been check these out!): 1) Upper Cathedral Wash (not lower that you had) -- if you're adventurous you can get on top of the Vermillion Cliffs, but not for everyone (see Kelsey's book Non technical slot canyons of the CO plateau) 2) Ropes Trail (sometimes referred to as Fisherman's Trail) -- takes you down to CO river 3) Jackass Canyon 4) Rider Canyon 5) Blue Pools Slot/Wash. Yes you need a guide for Water Holes now so I've never done it (and the reason I won't ever do Antelope)

That 300' rappel will keep me out of Waterholes. Sundance taught me 180' is about as high as I want to go. I'll look into some of those other ones. There's SO MUCH in the area. I kinda wanted to touch more on the better known places for this vid.

It all depends on where you are. It's spotty reception and depends on the hike and any obstructions like slot canyon walls, etc. In Page or Kanab themselves, reception is fine. You get down into Buckskin Gulch and you won't get signal at all.

I would recommend going in Wire Pass. There is a ladder (if it hasn't washed away) that's about 6' tall, but otherwise it's flat. It puts you right into the slot canyon right off the bat. You then turn left (looking down canyon) where it joins Buckskin (after less than a mile or so). Go down buckskin as far as you want and turn around when you've had enough. I haven't gone in at the actual Buckskin trailhead, but think it's farther to get to the good stuff. And Wire Pass is really cool. If you go in at Lee's Ferry, it's maybe 30 miles to get to Buckskin. And Whitehouse is about 7, 5 miles of which aren't exceptionally interesting.

No problem. That's Alstrom Point. Take a dirt road out of Big Water, just outside Page. High(ish) clearance 4WD to get up to the point where that was shot, but in decent conditions you can get close with about anything if memory serves me correctly.

Did antelope circa 1992 93 and not that crowdy and I could stop the people by saying Nal Geographic when I was taking pictures . Around this area you have snake Canyon if I remember the name that is another slot one. I came back in2010 : "HELL", But i went back for a second time in early afternoon with Navajo family that I met and we could play hide & seek with the kids... The same time I went back to lower Antelope the one on the other side of the road, first time in the morning and at the gate. It was my second visit and a bit more crowded than the first time but still ok for photography and playing flute.

I need to go to Upper/Middle Antelope one of these days. I'm sure it's beautiful. Never heard of Snake Canyon. Only Waterholes and Canyon X.

Just went through Lower Antelope Slot Canyon. in Sept. You go with a guide and only 5 others in the group. Because of Covid they keep you in small groups and you have the place to yourself because the groups do not bump into each other. The best we have seen to get great photos. You did not mention Coyote Butte South where you have areas like the Wave and so much more.

I'm gonna have to check it out then. Smaller groups is my thing. They still have the sign up (as of a couple weeks ago) at Waterholes saying the reservation is closed to outsiders. I wondered if Antelope was still open.

@@JerryArizona We were just at Antelope the end of Sept. I tried to move up my reservation since we arrived early(they are on Mountain time). I was informed that no one walking up today will get in because each day is full with reservations. I think someone said they are at 50% capacity because of the smaller groups. Give it a try. We never had anyone around us except the 5 in our group.

Hey man, I asked this question on another one of your videos. If you could choose one activity would it be Cathedral Wash Hike or Sunset Volcano/Indian Ruins area? We only have time for 1. I have a 10 and 13 year old.

Personally, I liked Cathedral Wash better. But your kids might have more fun with the Sunset/Walnut Canyon. Depends on how adventurous they are. I like the scrambling at Cathedral (and it's not that hard) and the pay off of the Colorado River at the end.

When is off season to avoid crowds visit these areas especially the Wave?

There is no off season for the Wave. It sells out year round, regardless of season. During the winter, Page and Kanab do slow down a bit though, for the rest of the hikes.

how do you go about renting an appropriate vehicle to access some of these more challenging to access areas, eg White Pocket

Not sure about Kanab and Page, but I know places like Ouray and Moab have Jeep rental places. I'd just Google "Page, Arizona 4WD rentals" or even just call the local rental places to see. You'll want offroad tires, 4WD and a lift for something like Coyote Buttes South or White Pocket. Sand boards and an air compressor are a good idea too. We bought those off Amazon, but they probably rent them as well. Another idea would be to rent a side by side/OHV.

Spencer Trail & Cathedral Wash only require a day use fee you can pay at a kiosk when you drive in. Horseshoe Bend has a fee station you pay. But neither of those are required ahead of time and they're unlimited as far as I know. Toadstools & White Pocket do not require permits at all. I believe you can get a day pass for Wire Pass/Buckskin at the BLM office for free. (Permits are required for overnight stays and go up for sale in advance.) You used to just sign in at the trailhead, but I think they changed it.

another quick question, i bought a national geographic map of the san rafael swell , some people dont trust them, i am an old dinosaur, i like technolgy but i still like maps, any recomendations on paper maps ??

I mainly research online and use an app called Gaia on my iPhone for wayfinding. I do have several maps though; almost all from National Geographic. Those seem to be the best.

@@JerryArizona i will look into gaia , i use trail forks around here, i need to upgrade, and i have hiked and biked on the basic rim trail, next to the page airport with my grandson in past visits, will try to get him do cathedral wash with me ! leaving montana on march 5th, very excited !

My wife and I would like to do some of the shorter hikes in this beautiful area, but I am semi-disabled with a fused left knee and a thrashed right hip, but we still like to get out and move. Can you recommend which of these are realisiticly do-able for my condition? A 15 mile rough climbing terrain is out. We would just like your advice.

I would recommend starting with Horseshoe Bend. Definitely the easiest trail out there. If you are OK with that, you might try Toadstools. Not sure what Antelope Canyon is like, but if those first two are OK, that might be worth trying. If you have a decent vehicle, driving Cottonwood Road from Big Water to Kodachrome Basin gives some beautiful scenery. Plenty of hiking options (like Grosvenors Arch) along the way you might try. If you have a serious 4WD, you can also try Smokey Mountain Road from Big Water to Hole in the Rock Road. It gets dicey at the end going down to Hole in the Rock (don't try it unless it's dry), but it's an adventure.

@@markporter6933 for paper maps, I usually get National Geographic. But the roads I recommended are pretty long and probably span a few. I typically use Gaia, an app on my iPhone for wayfinding on trips like that. I just tried Google Maps and they don't show either of those roads. If you are uncomfortable with that type of wayfinding, I would not recommend Smokey Mountain Road. Cottonwood Road is much more mellow though. Horseshoe Bend and Toadstools both can be found just using Google Maps on your phone.

I've camped and hiked trails at Lee's Ferry 4 times, the first time was in 1992 through to 2003. None of those occasions was there a kiosk where I had to pay a fee to enter. The last time I visited, 2012 there was a kiosk why, other than to sqeeze money out of folk ? That's called progress ??

Jerry, I really enjoyed your video but one thing you did made me cringe every time it happened. The highway is NOT I-89! Interstate freeways are 4-lane divided highways and have a blue and red shield to mark them. Also, I-89 is in New England, part of the freeway connection from Boston to Montreal. Go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_89?wprov=sfla1 for more information. The road you were speaking of is US-89 and it's only 2-lanes (mostly) and is not a divided highway. Sorry, I'm a road geek and former traffic reporter, and that's just one of those things that gets under my skin.

Ironically, I got a Civil Engineering degree with an emphasis on highway design. Guess it’s been a couple years since school. I find that I pay attention to the details I’m interested in and ignore the ones I’m not interested in.

I used to live in Las Vegas, and we had a bunch of commercials there that said they were located "just off I-95." I always asked what state they were in, 'cause it sure wasn't Nevada, since I-95 goes along the East Coast!
