In my teens I went to friends who lived in the bush, clearing their land for their farm. I wandered off into the surrounding bush and heard movement. It was an old fellow with a bullock team. He was a quiet man, spoke softly to his animals and also never swore. He had some hooks made up just like those but without replaceable tips, he would turn to smithing and reshape the point. One idea that he used was to have a disc of steel with a whey cut near an edge, with a reinforced rim on that hole. The chain that connected to the tongs was fed through that hole and it slid under the leading edge of the log being pulled. It stopped them jamming onto roots and rocks. It may be something you could knock up and save you a lot of grief. This is the first time I have watched, great jod and I have subscribed. Looking forward to more

Just a note, when cutting raises logs, make a bottom cut first then from the top and your saw won't get trapped by the pressure. Enjoying the channel😊

Homesteading with the Skinners uses tongs, winch and arm to load logs for dimensional lumber all the time. Matt Cremona uses chains 'cuz most of his logs are massive, so he can cut slabs

Great to see you and your family out working together in the forestry, but get yourself a pair of chaps cause one little bite from that chainsaw is going to put you out of action for a long time. Believe me, New Zealand has a lot of forester,s and it is compulsory to wear them chaps. A chainsaw bite is never a clean cut it’s more of a cut and rip, and takes a very long time to heal. Chaps my man save your legs and also makes it a little easier moving thru the scrub and undergrowth.. Kiwi Dave New Zealand

Those logs that are partially rotted can still be used for your cement forms. You don/t want to use up the good framing lumber on the forms.

In general, the USDA Forest Service allows everyone to collect deadwood from fallen trees as long as they’ll use it to build a campfire. No license or prior consent is required for such an act. However, if you want to take the deadwood off the site of the national park or forest, that requires permission from the forest service itself.

About the rotten log... for structural framing, no. But it could be used for concrete forms, dunnage to stack good wood, even lay down inch live-edge planks to keep you out of the mud working this winter.

Hey, if you hook those tongs to your foot bucket, you wouldn’t need a second person you just operate the tractor by hooking up automatically by drop in the bucket over the long I’m gonna pick the lock up and drive away with it. You don’t need unhook it with the backhoe part and have a second person.

It might be interesting to track the amount of wood you use on the house and at some point compare what it would have cost to purchase it. It’s great to know that you have enough free wood for years to come! And not that you don’t have enough to do but what about a zip line to go with that tire swing? 😍🇨🇦

Beautiful forest. It seems like that big questionable tree may be good further up to the point that you could salvage one or two good sections. The tongs really seem like a good investment. Such great trees 🌲Your kids are so helpful...you're doing something right! Another great video, fun with the swing and campfire. Thanks

@dionh70 10 месяцев назад
I think I asked you folks previously, but I'll ask again. Do you plan to build any sort of lean-to or wood shed to protect what you mill up? Obviously you'll be tarping off the pile of un-milled logs to keep the snow off of them this winter. You did say you're going to invest in a jackhammer. Have you looked at feather&wedge technique for breaking up large rocks? Just use a standard hammer drill to punch some holes, set the feather&wedge, then have the kids bang on them until the boulder fractures. You can easily break off slabs of the biggest boulders without excavating the entire beast, too. Thanks for listening to us armchair experts.

Dear dionh 👍👌👏 Exactly. I was astonished to read this because I wanted to comment similar. Yes, they should have a wood shed and also a roof over the sawmill. And yes, drilling and splitting boulders instead of constantly overstressing the bucket teeth and the backhoe is the right thing to do. Work smart not hard. Hope that they took the big cut off tree pieces with them for making firewood. Best regards, luck and health in particular. Post Scriptum: I'm not an arm chair expert, I'm a real one. 😁 ;-)

We plan to build lots of things. As you know, time is the enemy. We have thought of lots of ways to get the rocks out, including expansion demolition morter (I think that's what it's called). Appreciate the ideas. Thanks
@dionh70
@dionh70 10 месяцев назад
@@aboulderlifeoffgrid It's demolition grout. The orange home improvement store carries a brand known as Dexpan. I've seen miners use it instead of blasting, but it does require lots of time. Heavy tarps with suitably heavy objects to hold them down will suffice until you can get stuff built.

Blown Away, “national forest” as much wood as you can fit on your trailer! So cool, we just don’t have personal or family saw mills as every scrap of land is owned, and even the forestry commission land and trees although publicly owned are not available to the public?We do have 3 different woodpeckers though and they sound just the same when drumming! Great to see your well into double figures with the subs, so will grow rapidly now, great family, great channel! Andy, Southern England.

That isn’t a very good log for building and you are correct. But you can use lessor grade wood for constructing forms for concrete because you typically throw those in the burn pile anyway after you use them once the concrete dries.

Down south in the swamps of LA they drag up cypress logs sunken in the swamps for many years and they are fine, different wood absorbs different, but there is still a lot of boards to cut out of those logs, and burn the rest, why waste them ???
