Ya think? Try using Windows 10 on the Insider Programme. You can't alter some of the telemetry settings if you have agreed to get freebies from Microsoft. Every so often you get a message saying something like "The settings on this PC are controlled by an Administrator. Contact your Administrator for detail on how to change settings." That Administrator is Microsoft.

After a couple repeats I gave up Windows altogether; and since I had already a nicely running Linux on my other HD I decided to unplug my Windows drive. Fifteen months ago, I had never even opened up a computer case... technology scared the crap out of me... but I loved what it could do! Now, I've built two brand new Linux computers from scratch, regularly install new operating systems onto a hard drive just to check them out... and I'm having a ball learning to do everything! Once I actually started using Linux, I hardly ever went back to my Windows computer except to use one program that I hadn't quite managed to replicate well enough in Linux (I have now though lol). When I put Mint Cinnamon on my first new computer mid 2018 and realized it was a keeper as a daily driver, I stripped down my old Windows computer and modernized it up with a nice Linux distro and gave it to my brother to use and have fun with. Windows sucks... long live Linux lol.

Microsoft treats your computer as theirs. I use to have a computer repair shop, and #8 Viruses was my bread and butter, and these were people with anti-virus running. One thing you didn't cover is that Microsoft restricts the owner of their own computer from hidden directories and files, like these files belong to Microsoft. They also tell you to get a hold of your administrator, when it is your machine. I get that Microsoft might not know this, but at that point you are normally locked out of taking care of the problem. Linux on the other hand doesn't do any of this, and in root you have full access to your OWN computer.

@nmeunier I agree with you. My uncle bought a brand new Windows 10 computer, and I removed as much of the spyware and other crap as possible. I even set up the MVPS HOSTS file for him. Within months his fast computer was slower than the crappy laptop he replaced. It was ridiculous. He eventually had to take it for service because Windows 10 became unusable. (I am done wasting my time on that piece of crap OS.) I used Windows XP and Windows 7 since they were released, and loved Windows 7 (at least until they started trying to force Windows 10 upgrades.) I was a huge fan, but now I am done with Microsoft forever. Microsoft is no longer trustworthy with all their Windows 10 shenanigans, and obviously don't care at all about their customers. Linux on the other hand is awesome - especially Linux Mint and Peppermint OS - but there are tons of fantastic distros and very easy to find one that suits you. I love how incredibly fast, stable and customizable it is. I occasionally have to startup my Windows 7 laptop to find an old file or something, and I just dread it. Thank God (and Linus, the developers, and all the generous people who help newbies switch over) for Linux!

Yup. Standard fresh install procedure: Fire up Edge and download Chrome. Microsoft are hip to this nowadays and Edge practically begs you to give it a try and not set Chrome as your default browser. Earlier versions of Edge made it very hard to even get to the Chrome download site and then would deliberately get in the way of you changing the default settings. Isn't that typical of the mentality at Microsoft?

Steve Jobs once said to Bill Gates that Apple OS is the best operating system (between Windows and Mac OS). Gates replied "Windows doesn't have to be" (the best, since I've got all these contracts with IBM PC clone makers and thus will dominate the market). This was basically true at the time and obviously Gates took this idea to heart by being OK with producing a significantly inferior product ever since. I rationalized moving to 7 since it was about as close to an intuitive OS as Msft had put out only to watch them scrap it and sabotage it for 10. On a scale of 10 to the worst mess posing as an OS it is properly named. One note about the virus issue; I consider W10 itself to be a virus.

I switched a couple of years ago and although I keep having issues with Linux mint it remains far better than windows 10. Issue 1: Games. But with WINE, now proton it's going better. Issue 2: lack of drivers for older Radeon graphics cards. I am on R5 m330, no driver. Issue 3: few tweaks are required for Linux, like tuning down swappiness, get some package so Libre Office can read MS fonts, and set a shortcut to switch keyboard language. Issue 4: I believe it was Linux Mint 19 (maybe 18.3 I don't remember exactly) that asked for EFI Bios to allow installing it in dual boot. I had to use AOMEI partition to translate legacy bios installation of windows to EFI. Before said version it never mandated it. Issue 5: important programs like AutoDesk Maya, Photoshop, Quickbooks still do not have a Linux port. You have to learn alternative open source software. (Blender, Gimp). Even with these issues with Linux, Windows is still inferior and frustrating. It started once an update when the working day was over while I had to take my laptop home. Worst experience ever!

I solved most of the issues but not all of them but over time some issues will be solved or you will simply adapt not to have that feature. Also you will be slightly less productive in Linux due to the fact of having less apps or inferior quality apps and not fully utilizing the hardware capabilities because of not optimized drivers. Microsoft is herding people slowly toward a full subscription environment which will be their new cash cow. In a few years Windows will be subscription only with various packages like: Windows + Office 365, Windows + Office 365 + Defender, Windows + Office 365 + Defender + IT Help Desk Support....Microsoft is also slowly preparing Windows to eventually be cloud based like Chromebook. This will give Microsoft central control over everything like: purchased software, data, security, IT support, etc.... I need not mention how this will destroy private sector IT as it will be replaced with the "Get Help" app that is already on Windows 10 computers today. They are already incorporating the Linux command line into their PowerShell which should alert everyone as to what their plans are with Linux as a whole. This should be a big concern to everyone because if Microsoft controls the standard then all privacy and choice is gone and subscription prices will only increase and increase and increase...
@tylercgarrison
@tylercgarrison 5 лет назад
THIS THIS THIS. I have been ranting and raving about this for a while. We are slowly losing control over the things we pay for. When everything is subscription-based, we lose all rights to use it and to our own information and privacy. The mobile device takeover isnt helping either. Everyone is so excited for the possibility of an ARM centered future, but I think it's going to be terrible. Less control, less say, less choice, less privacy. Pretty soon, we won't even own the rights to our own fucking information.

Yea to hell with the cloud. I like to store my data on my computer. I like downloads over streaming. I want programs not apps and I don't want to have to be online to use the software that has always been on my computer. Adobe started making Photoshop and Lightroom subscription based. I have Photoshop cs5 on my windows 7 desktop and I use it often. But if for some reason my desk top was physically destroyed along with all of my software and I had to build a new one I would probably have to stop using Adobe products because I don't see my self ever upgrading to any subscription based rental software. As it is my desktop is stripped of all it's networking and sharing applications, has no anti-virus software installed on it. The only time it has ever been online was during the initial setup/OS installation and once everything was installed I took her offline and that's the way I keep it. It's stable, reliable and agile. I can't remember the last time it crashed. It never really needs to be updated because it runs all of my programs just fine the way it is. I have no need for all of the work arounds and piece meal system patch's that Microsoft comes up with to secure there software from attacks commonly referred to as "updates". So my desktop spins like a top. I have a win 8.1 ACER laptop for rummaging around the web that I don't use for much of anything else but I can't stand 8.1. They took a major step backward with 8.1. It's worse than Vista.

The mere idea of stopping Windows version at 10, is so horrible and utterly stupid. The incremental numbering of the "external" version and innovative naming conventions (XP, Vista, Seven, etc) worked marvelously for Microsoft for ages. It gave a "false" sensation of something new, evolving, and hopefully magically better. I bet their new marketing team has no idea what they're doing "put a cut-away scene from Family Guy here".

@Вероника Заглотова It's rather a marketing trick to attract new customers and force old ones to upgrade. I don't think it has to do with the quality. And of course important for Microsoft to listen to those with good points.

Viruses - My brother bought a computer with Windows 7 years ago and while it is a good version of Windows it is still susceptible to viruses. He is not that tech oriented so I end up as the person he calls for computer problems. His installs never lasted for more than 3 months even with the best anti programs I could find. I would then spend a few hours wiping and reinstalling everything. The constant reboots after installing were aggravating. About the 6th or 7th time doing a wipe and reinstall I suggested setting up his computer as a dual boot with Linux Mint. I told him I would repair the Linux install but if Windows failed he would have to do it himself next time. He gave Linux a try! About 6 months later he called be and asked me to delete Windows. He said Linux was faster (no anti programs likely helped) and that it was as fast as the day I installed it. I have had to get some hardware working for him over the last few years, but he has even done Mint version updates by himself.

More reasons: I'll never forget seeing files on my old Windows installation using an Ubuntu livedisk in 2007. Files you can't ever see from Windows unless you're a very clever guy... and everyone who uses windows develops an amazing level of expertise very quickly. It must become an obsession really, otherwise nobody can survive. Over a few years I developed intuitive keyboard/mouse control. So try this: install 'easygesture' and if you have a mouse that has thumb buttons, moap them to 'ctrl' and 'alt'. Now you can move, resize, open, close, do anything with your apps with mouse gestures (instead of only having the keyboard maps). So you can write a script to check if guayadeque is running, and if not start it up to play music etc. I do that drawing a 'g'. Wait until you check out all the shortcuts for Vivaldi, then wonder at how easy it is to define and map those functions (hide UI - quick squiggle). I very rarely EVER need to use a menu. For the rare occasion I'm launching something I can't quite remember, I use 'uLauncher'. The convenience is so incredible, if I load up windows I complain 'oh my god, I actually need to start aiming and clicking stuff here'. So for the OS, Windows hasn't got a hope - but the real f*kker is the software people can't use, partly due to ignorance (not being aware that you can use your computer) but sometimes things you just can't do with your Linux laptop - the company forcing using Outlook etc.

Microsoft trends... 3.11 for workgroups, 98SE, XP, and 7. Perhaps NT and a server version or two. Basically years between gems and turds, with the crown jewel ending up being a giant fake cubic zirconia (win 10). Linux trends... slow march forward and upward. I remember having to recompile the whole kernel just to add a new driver, breaking my entire system just trying to add something (granted I'm a forever n00b), etc. and now most distributions have their own package managers, any software you can possibly imagine is at your fingertips, and gaming is becoming more and more available. I'm so impressed with Linux growth these last few years. It's insane.

The other point about viruses, don't forget if Microsoft clean up the act and make the core more secure then it's going to put a lot of people out of work, there is a whole cottage industry around protecting Windows using third party resources. All the computers in our household now use Linux, my wife is pretty computer illiterate, but she just uses it without any problems, I would hate to inflict Windows 10 onto her, I know I'll end up wearing the bloody computer around my neck as a bit of bling. I too was absolutely sick of windows! I use to use windows 7 all the time but there's always some BS you have to deal with. Then I switched to LINUX! I LOVE LINUX!!! Wanna know why? Okay here we go! I was looking to see if they put out a new Linux Mint yet? What I found AMAZED ME! Some how I bumped into Distrowatch.com I was like a kid in a candy store from that point on! You see Linux is kicking the living SH!T out of windows! Not only did I find linux Mint BUT OVER 100 other Operating Systems! Linux is NOT the old Linux you use to know way back when NOT EVEN CLOSE! There's certain Linux OS's "Specifically" for gaming, hacking, protection, every day use, servers, media & studio! It was like I drifted away from Linux next thing you know their kicking everyone's tail around! Here's why Linux OS's are "Truly Special" 1 They're Fresh OS's! 2 They connect to wifi way better than any windows OS. 3 They're NOT extremely vulnerable like windows. 4 Software is FREE! Almost like every software for Linux is Free! 5 There's NO Threat of your system locking up because Linux wants to know if your Linux is "Genuine Linux" BS you know like windows does. 6 The absolute variety of Linux OS's is mind boggling! 7 LIVE CD's! I LOVE THIS FEATURE! Live CD's simply means burn a OS of your choice to a DVD pop it in your computer and watch it boot up and work beautifully! There's no need to install it unless you want to. 8 Linux is NOT nearly as frustrating as windows. I think windows has a lot of bugs intentionally! You know so Microsoft can scam you out of your money type of thing. It's completely different when your OS is designed by independent companies and individuals. I even converse with Warith Maawali from time to time. He's the creator of perhaps the finest Linux Distro/ OS named Kodachi. Kodachi is my favorite! There's too many reasons why. Go and download it and you'll understand. Linux is the future and I strongly believe it's because of some seriously creative people like Warith Maawali who let his imagination run wild. He also said something about have to upgrade a node? I believe it was. Anyway, People who don't have any desire to use Linux seriously it's their Loss! You also stated "it's NOT going to change because I want it to" My response: I could care less if people switch over or not. What I'm doing is simply trying to give people a heads up on a way better product. Whether they want to switch or not is simply up to them. If you want to be a stick stuck in the mud that's fine. However, there's TONs OF People who have made the change because Linux has become Fun & Exciting! Not to mention seriously adventurous! I actually went to distrowatch to see how many Operating Systems they offer I counted over 300! 302 to be exact. Now you may not know this but Chris the guy in the video use to a Microsoft Windows Technician and has many degrees to prove it. Think about this Chris Titus made the switch from Microsoft to Linux! Think about that! Think about this too YOU NEVER OWN WINDOWS Operating System on your computer!!! NOPE! Which is why they can and often do check to see if your "Windows Is Authentic! You don't have that problem with Linux! You own it! It's yours! There's NEVER a check to see if your Linux is Authentic! You're right though you ought to NOT try Linux! Why? Okay, i noticed that there is a lot of misconceptions about windows on the internet, powered by the hate (and fear) people have towards windows, so i will try to clarify some of these topics. 1-*Telemetry makes you computer slow* So, first things first telemetry is the analysis and monitoring of anonymous data from a given software with the goal of identify and solve errors and bugs, and improve the product. All the data being sent by windows to Microsoft consists of small archives containing information including but not limited to: What keys you type the most on your keyboard to improve "Autocomplete" in Edge; your current location (IP address) to improve several services, including the news feed on Microsoft Edge, weather, Cortana, etc. Examples of Apps and services that use telemetry include: Android, IOS, MacOS, ALL internet browsers, ALL anti-viruses and anti-malwares, Adobe, Oracle, IBM. That being said, is safe to say that almost every software that is connected to the internet is sending information from your computer. Saying that only the data sent to Microsoft causes your computer to slow down just doesn't make sense; as a proof, here's a link to a post made by David Tomaschik, a Security Engineer at Google, on his own blog, testing the claims of a Czech news site about privacy on windows: systemoverlord.com/2015/08/16/so-is-windows-10-spying-on-you/ on which you can conclude that no Large volume of data was being sent to Microsoft during his tests. If what you say is true and this service made your computer slow down significantly, it certainly have nothing to do with the amount of data being sent. There is a rather common bug on windows on which the Hard Disk usage stays constantly at 100%, you might have experienced something similar. If turning off telemetry worked for you then that's great! but it definitely wasn't putting your privacy at risk. 2-*Cortana, and other "useless" windows services waste too much resources* The Windows Enterprise LTSB was released with computers that run only a single software 24hrs a day in mind, and since these machines do not need these services or any update that is not related to security, this version does not come with any of those making it the "fastest" windows version if the statement above is true. That is not true, even Cortana when not in use enters in a low consumption state; in my computer while idle it consumes only 3.4 MB of RAM of the 4GB total, which is just insignificant for the performance of the system. The insignificant difference of the performance between both LTSB and Pro versions of windows was proven on this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yj5hmVovfAM.html, by Baboo (the test is made at 8:14, Pro on the left and LTSB on the right); after 5 minutes in idle, the LTSB version consumed only 14% less than the Pro version. The exact difference was of 22MB, that is only 1% of 2GB of RAM installed on that system, which is already a low amount of RAM by modern standards. 3-*Viruses* Yes, Windows is not a no-brainer. Sincerely I think everyone should use the OS they think suits their needs the most, and thus i will not force anyone to use Windows, but we got to separate facts from fantasy.

What I like about this channel is that he can say "I used to use this OS, but now I use this other OS, here's some of my reasons for making that choice". It's not the usual new-convert zealotry or half-incoherent hate rants, not the usual linux-pwns-windows tough talk, not even trashing (too much) on Microsoft. He's only saying that WinOS has certain flaws and issues he doesn't want to live with and linux offers him an alternative which doesn't have those flaws and issues. I've used all sorts of linux over the years. I still do. But the sad truth is I wouldn't install a linux on grandma's computer - not even a "friendly" one like Mint - because I already know it just wouldn't work for her. And the other sad truth is that sometimes I can't get away from running a WinOS myself ... not all hardware is linux compatible, not all software is linux-compatible, most of the computers I touch which are owned by others are going to have factory-installed Windows ... it ain't a perfect world.

Hi Chris I just finished utilizing the script from your how to De-bloat Windows 10 video it worked great so I thought I would subscribe to your channel! I just installed Linux Mint 19.1 on a new computer I built from spare parts from my recent upgrade of my gaming computer (that is still running Win7). I am very impressed with Linux Mint it was very easy to install and I find it very easy to use, plus the Linux forums community is very helpful and friendly. With the Death clock for Windows 7 at less than a year away I wanted an option to Windows 10 which I DESPISE. I bought a new laptop last fall with Win10 on it because my wife and I were traveling for 5 months over last winter and dragging my PC around wasn't real practical. That is when I realized I had to come up with another option and so far I am very happy with the Linux option! I am posting this on my Linux machine! : ) I was going to build a new gaming computer this winter but with the present state of the gaming industry I decided to hold off for another year. The only area where I may still need to deal with windows is going to be gaming. Linux is getting much better but it's not quite there yet I am hoping the gaming industry gets serious about supporting Linux gaming. If I do build a new high end gaming PC next year I am thinking if I have to install Windows 10 to play games I plan to use it primarily for gaming and not much else so I would want to strip it down to what I need for gaming such as the fire fox browser, drop box , etc. and turn it into primarily a gaming PC (at least until the game support on Linux gets a little better). Thanks for the videos they have been very helpful. I am watching your vids on switching to Linux!

@mitchelvalentino1569
@mitchelvalentino1569 5 лет назад
Drumpf_4_All Correct. You can’t turn it off completely. Windows Enterprise LTSB, which isn’t cheap or available for home use, can lessen telemetry, but its still lurking in the background waiting to phone home when you schedule security updates, the definition of which Microsoft isn’t consistent on. Wrestling with Windows 10 telemetry isn’t worth it. Best to ditch it completely.
@ChrisTitusTech
@ChrisTitusTech 5 лет назад
You can strip out a ton of registry entries and services using powershell which pretty much "turns it off", but it is a massive beast that will "reinfect" your PC on the next update. I typically keep my GPO of telemetry at "security" level and then run my powershell script to disable it when it comes back. You are correct that it just never goes away... its AIDS.
@mitchelvalentino1569
@mitchelvalentino1569 5 лет назад
Chris Titus Tech I don’t have much experience with Windows 10 beyond helping some helpless family members, but this is exactly my experience. I thought I killed the telemetry by performing surgery on the registry, but next update comes along and took me back to square one. It’s a shame, because windows could be a decent enough normie OS if Microsoft wasn’t so invasive and incorrigible.

My last straw with windows 10 was when I found my case fan running at or near full almost the whole time. I also had all of your reasons, but having to listen to that fan I decided it was finally time for the switch. My system went from Windows (with a Xubuntu VM) to the total reverse. That fan is now nearly silent most of the time. And I only need to use the VM for instances where websites absolutely require IE to function or to run a Windows only program.

I've used CentOS then Ubuntu then Linux Mint for various things but never left Windows on my critical work system. After watching some of your challenge videos, I tried OpenSuse but didn't really like it. I guess I'm too accustomed to the Ubuntu way of doing things. My current strategy to get away from Windows is to set up a separate desktop system running Mint at work and see if I can wean myself from my last couple of Windows only applications.

The big advantage (downfall) of Centos is that it is Redhat(made from Redhat's source code). Basically any book on Redhat is a book on Centos. Redhat has always been extremely stable but that also means that their packages are really dated. RHEL 8 is supposed to have the best of both worlds (stable and current). What Windows apps do you still need to replace?

Another thing that bugs me about Windows 10. Non-Microsoft applications break alot! I constantly find applications that you install and are working fine. Then you don't use them for a few weeks and when you go to use the app it is either broken or missing. You clink on the icon and get a file not found and you have to reinstall the app. Come back in a few weeks and the app is gone again.

You can disable all telemetry at install. My network has 4 machines all sharing files. Never had to reconfigure any once setup. One machine is running a game server. Absolutely no issues of any kind. Cpu usage is never close to max. I am constantly monitoring temps, voltages, etc just in case . Just never experienced any of these issues, even with constant daily use of windows 10.

I stopped using Windows because of the forced Updates that Borked my system one too many times. I am technically still in their Insider Program on both the Xbox and Windows. Like I have said before, I havent really booted into Windows in about 9 months. I have actually taken my 3tb Gaming drive for my Windows drive (I use 2 removable trays, 1 for SSDs (boot), and 1 for 3.5" standard HDs) and but it as my new Arch install (went back to Gnome after getting irritated with some Plasma issues). There are still at least 1 game that I need Windows for so far, Space Engineers, but since I bought a AMD 980 Nitro GPU Windows would probably be borged anyways. And I think you are wrong about Windows going completely away. 1. M$ is doing the best to destroy it. 2. Like you said more and more people are going to Chromebooks, phone, tablets and not using computers at all. ( I feel like a Chromebook is nothing more than a glorified tablet). Most other things will go web based, Linux, or OSX (But Apple is doing pretty bad things to their computers too).

Got a Win 7 machine about 4 years ago. About 3 months after all drivers and updates were installed and it was all stable, then I disabled them. Still heaven. I use only Malwarebytes Premium and don't go on porn, gambling, sharing, etc, but MWB catches the odd inadvertent site and warns me. I use imaging (Acronis), so even if I were to be infected with something intractable, I could quite happily bin the entire system and start over. Microsoft and Apple both have had their time and have become too arrogant and greedy to be allowed to continue. Those in the development community should step up to make Linux become the undisputed leader - make it free, make it BETTER FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE and they won't have a choice. The only reason that people choose the products from these massive old corporations, is fear of the unknown and pretty much everyone outside of the 'IT Community' knows nothing of what an OS is and why, etc, apart from enthusiasts. It needs to become, "It's free. It's got your back (privacy). It runs any program that you have - even the old ones. It''s fast." Even the most 'tech-averse' person is going to see the logic of that. Take the browser away from Google (and try to hold on to Net Neutrality) and the people have the computer as their tool again, as opposed to the use of a machine that runs only corporate spy software.

I finally switched to Windows 8.1 and later upgraded to Windows 10 am never going back. I simply got tired of updating system literally every day and those updates often breaking something. You can say whatever you want about Windows 10, but I appreciate when everything is easy and just works. I occasionally install Archlinux or Ubuntu on another HDD and play with them for a while, but I have no use for them. I have tried installing Archlinux on my 2015 HP laptop with SSD and 12 GB RAM, but it just feels way slower than Windows 10.

Apparently chocolatey is quite a viable package manager, though of course it's not part of the OS so still not as seamless as apt, dnf, etc. It's a shame that Microsoft can make very good tools like VS Code, Visual Studio, etc. (anything .NET development related) and yet the core OS just can't get to a level where users ENJOY using instead of getting stuck with (because of business use)

M$ has shown that their more concerned with the "user being the product" by serving us up the "malware " that windows 11 really is, justified by the fact that W11 functions as if it's nothing more than a "shell or wrapper" around W10 but with refinements in it's telemetry and data collection abilities.
