I was rhe same way, getting nervous and angry all the time. I still get very excited when they play playoff games. But what the heck is the point if I’m not having fun watching it?
Not sure that I've said this before, and I don't know if it will make sense, but I LOVE the fact that Shannon TALKS to US in the video and that it is clear that he is talking to us and not just talking to a camera recording stuff. The whole presentation and casual feel of each video has been just a pleasure to watch. EDIT: Oh wow. Thanks for all the likes...I think this is most I've ever gotten for a comment, but it is sincere admiration. Shannon and UT are among the best and most complete hockey youtubers on the platform.
Well said! I've often wondered why I enjoy watching Shannon's videos over anyone else's and I think you just answered that for me. THG never change! We appreciate you.
It feels like you are having a conversation w/ an old friend, someone that you'd like to hang out with, maybe catch a game on TV sharing some chips and dips (or what ever is around)
When Shannon gets to about 10 million subs, I predict he will reveal that the whole channel was started as a means to sell a warehouse full of old CCM jerseys he bought on eBay.
I'm so impressed by Shannon's humble approach to his videos. It makes me hopeful about the world and the internet. It shows that he is a true fan of the sport!
Believe it or not, an American NHL Hockey fan in Compton. Gave 'The Hockey Guy' a shout out on a WWE Wrestling podcast. That how I came to know this channel....
Speaking of Tree and friends, I don't know if Hiei 2k7 likes hockey, but he should do a video with Shannon. Both have cats. And Tree have recognized THG in one of his videos
My biggest thing that has changed is.. players dont always fit in coaches systems. Its true that a different scenery or system will help that player have success. It didnt think that when I was younger
@cdfmmcc Yeah Bennett is showing why the Flames were so afraid of trading him, but at the same time it just never worked for him in Calgary. This is a weird sport sometime.
One of the many things that separates his channel from others is the lack of negativity while others will dedicate a myriad of episodes on who and what teams "suck" in the ever so tired list format. Also many of the opinions are immature and premature and there is rarely an episode that these channels upload to rectify past judgements.
Also: No completely Hot Takes, without commitment. There are so many channels where the general structure of every argument is: "This gut is an absolute bust and should be allowed near a rink. I'm not saying that he might never become a great player, but his numbers are slightly below what was expected from him". If you have an opinion you believe in, stick up for it. If you already know it's blown way out of proportion, just don't blow it out of proportion. Shannon understands that, but it is surprising how many other channels don't.
I want to add to your point that players don't suck: You always have to keep in mind that they are competing against other pro players. If a turnover happens it often happens because another player was just doing his job extremely well.
This. People only see these guys compared to other elite players. In Columbus, you see guys like Jody Shelly or Jared Boll around the ice rinks now and then if you are there enough. Whenever he actually laces up, he makes literally everyone look like school children, despite being a "low skill goon" who's been retired for a while. Up close, it's unreal how skilled even the "lowliest" guys in the NHL truly are.
My god parents bought me a original style green Minnesota Wild jersey and had my name and the number I wore when I first started playing hockey on it and some people still see it and say "oh I never heard of Bruessel he must have sucked" and then I have to explain why I have the name and number on the back lol.
This approach is much more common in Europe (at least in Sweden) where you get your name and number. Its way more common than to see a player name on a fans jersey.
Can’t believe it’s been FOUR YEARS since I found your channel. Love just playing your videos while cleaning or relaxing. I chuckle a lot at your jokes, made me love hockey to it’s fullest
I think the regret is when this or that guy isn't good. Many players will not be around a team for their whole career. Gretzky did not play his whole career for Edmonton. But the history stays, and when it's good, no harm. And it reminds of a good player for your team during some years
I used to get into the whole oh this player sucks thing too but in the last 5 years or so I've become fascinated in just how good professionals are, and not just hockey, it could be anything. The greatness that anyone who has made it to the highest level compared to average Joe's is beyond fascinating, it could be hockey, painting, cooking, skateboarding you name it I'm intrigued by those at the top
love Cliff Ronning. he's such a nice guy. used to always see my uncle training at eight rinks and Ronning would always come help out and give him tips.
Love that Ronning jersey. I had a Reebok back when he was on the Canucks I sadly lost in a house fire years back. It's about time I get a replacement for one of my fav Canuck players.
If you think this is good on his channel he has lots of playlists dedicated to videos solely on jerseys. He got me into collecting and I have about 32 jerseys now from 16 different teams
You are so genuine, Shannon. I can tell by how you carry yourself. It's a real delight to listen to your insights on the daily. I appreciate your measured, unbiased approach and how you respect the idea of the professional player.
You've changed my interest in Hockey. I used to only watch content about my team. We are talking 35 years of Leafs and only Leafs. Maybe game 6 or 7 of the cup, or the odd Lemieux or Gretzky playoff game other than that. You've made other hockey stories interesting and now I have a major interest in the league, prospects and everything about hockey thanks to you. :) Except Jerseys. Not yet anyway!
tbh what my thought is that you’re one of my fave people to listen to, and I just really enjoy putting your videos on when I’m reading or writing. you’re very passionate and I always tune into your videos.
I always preferred my jerseys with players names. For me it’s a time stamp of the era it comes from. Plus my ducks seem to change every 10 years anyways
Honestly cannot think of another person I could listen to for 25 minutes talking about random opinions. Shannon's traditional style of presentation is so easy to listen to
Now I low key want a collection of jersey fouls just to mess with people. Imagine a Montreal Canadiens jersey with Mats Sundin. Or Philadelphia Flyers Crosby jersey.
@@petrograd4068 now I want a Leafs Jersey with 97 on the back, but instead of McDavid on the name plate, it would say "keep dreaming". I would wear that around Toronto all day!
I've changed my mind about wearing a jersey to a game in which neither team is repped by your jersey. Jerseys are expensive and if you only have one, where is it more apropos to wear than a hockey game?? To that point, I've started wearing my Crosby jersey when I'm out and about. So far, I only wear my Stars jersey to games, but I go to enough of them that I've gotten my money's worth out of it. Sadly, my Nate Schmidt/Golden Knights jersey just hangs in the closet--but I will start wearing it out and about as well...
My wife’s uncle has a Wayne Gretzky Canucks jersey. He was so sure it was going to happen. I don’t think he ever wore it, when he showed me it was basically brand new.
The number 1 opinion of mine that has changed over the years... I no longer HATE any teams. There are teams that I don't really pay too much attention to. But there are no longer any teams that I hate.
@@rollo3417 a mixture of a number of things. The way the landscape of the NHL is changing. New rookies coming up. Friends and family cheering for teams. Taking them off the hated list. Maturity plays a big part. Players that you like, being traded to teams that you don't like. And kinda not being able to help but cheer for them. (Example: Pageau on the NYI) Just a laundry list of things.
Yeah, at this point I've realized that I lowkey like a thing or two about each team. The worse it gets for me is that I feel very "meh" towards a team, but that's it.
A lot of my tendencies changed (mellowed) after the Blues won the Cup. Before, I hated teams, accused fans of being bandwagoners, lived and died with the team, etc. Now, while some teams’ fans might annoy me online, and I might get mad at the Blues for underachieving this game or that game, it doesn’t ruin my night.
You're awesome Shannon... been following you since you humble beginnings. You deserve the attention and recognition for your dedication, hard work and quality product.
Call me young, but I legit don't know if that's a made up name or not. Sounds like one of those "definitely real" wingers that put up 90 points and 30 goals one season playing on Crosby's wing.
@@zacharyomalley355 he played in the early stages of the league. In 1918 he put up 44 goals in 20 games that year which I believe is the highest goals per game ever with someone with a considerable amount of games played
@@zacharyomalley355 Yeah, like Daniel mentioned, he was the first truly great goal scorers. before forward passes were a thing. Still holds the record for most goals in a game with 7. Shannon made a joke that he used to predict players would be busts when he was a teen, back in the 1800's. Fun fact: Those 7 goals were against Ryan Miller( I'm just full of age related jokes today, evidently)
@@zacharyomalley355 He’s actually a real player, just that he’s long gone by now. Known as “Phantom” Joe Malone, he played professionally from about 1910-1924, half in the NHA, and half in the NHL (when the NHA pretty much became the NHL in 1917). Prolific goal scorer, once scored 44 goals in a 20 game season and holds the NHL record for most goals in a game with 7. In his first five NHL seasons, he scored 142 goals in only 96 games. Pretty much the Ovechkin of the early NHL.
The biggest thing for me was learning that a lot of what makes a team successful never shows up on the stat sheet. Vegas' first season is the perfect example of this. Nobody thought they would do anything with the roster they drafted but they made the Final. Yes, part of it was because they had fantastic pro scouting to find diamonds in the rough, but the biggest thing was the feeling everyone in that locker rook had that they had something to prove. That isn't a number you can quantify, but it was so important for that team. You need to find the right mix of guys and the right attitudes to win just as much as you do raw stats. Numbers alone will never win you a championship.
I honestly don't remember when I subscribed to the channel, but you must have had like 10,000 subscribers max back then. I never had the time to watch all of the NHL games I'd like to, especially when things got super busy in uni. I'd end up listening and/or watching you do post-game analyses of the Canucks games. Although I don't watch every single one of your videos nowadays, I usually end up falling asleep to one of your videos in the background. I love how genuine you are and your type of humor is totally up my alley. Keep up the fantastic work, Shannon!
One of the biggest things that changed for me over the last decade is simply appreciating talents no matter what jersey it wears. Obviously I still have my preferred hierarchy of teams and enjoy watching their rivals lose accordingly but there's players I just really enjoy watching from every single team where I might have hated them based on something as silly as a logo in the past...
My first thought when you said, “NHL players don’t suck” was yeah, I’ve come around on that too. Aren’t I awesome. But, really I think you are the reason that’s happened. So, thank you 🙏 please just keep doing what you’re doing.
Shannon not gonna lie when I have trouble falling asleep I put on one of your longer videos and it usually gets the job done lmao. Love your vids tho watch them everyday.
Thanks for the great content! I watch your rankings every Sunday morning with my six year old son, who now makes up his own rankings and goes on a monologue, much like yours! It's great! All possible cuz you keep it clean.
I too stuck with blanks until I caved on a Point jersey when they had a fire sale thinking the Lightning wouldn't re-sign him. I knew we would. BUT I think we can all agree that putting your own name on a jersey places you into one of Dante's circles of hell.
The “NHL players don’t suck” opinion reminds me of a line from Norm MacDonald’s old sitcom from about 20 years ago. His character was a former NHL player, but he was infamous for being the “agony of defeat” guy. Another character once told him he sucked at hockey, but Norm replied with something like, “Let me be clear. I’m EXCELLENT at hockey. It’s just that compared to other NHL players, it seems like I suck.”
To his third jersey point, that’s the best part of being a Red Wings fan. We’ve had the same jerseys for 100 years. So all of our great player wore the same winged wheel 😂😂
Love the bit about Astronomy. New to your channel, and got me thinking. The Hockey Guy interviews Astronomer, because why not he is interested in the subject and it brings him joy. 10/10 would watch
Major props to #3 on the jersey list! I got a Canes jersey back in 2006 during the Stanley Cup season and put 37 on it with a custom name because that's my name/number. After the playoff run in 2019, I had the custom name taken off and put Svechnikov on it. The fonts aren't a perfect match, but I love wearing it and representing the Cup run and the current successes at the same time.
I like your approach to videos and I usually learn something new and the only sport I like is hockey. Your videos don't put me to sleep. Keep doing what you're doing.
I think the bit about being busts is right on the money. If you're a fan, and not a scout, you have no obligation to make such assessments. You don't need to be absolutely correct. So why would you predict someone will fail, before he even has the chance to try?
Thanks so much for your videos. I learn so much. I loved what u said about NHL players don't suck. I'm a die hard flyers fan so I get so tired of hearing that!
Great video. I love talking about jerseys for any sport. I hope the NHL can squeeze in a few color vs color games here and there. Not a ton, just a few. Soccer and the NBA pull it off. Penguins in black vs Flyers in orange needs to happen once or twice a year, to name one
One of these changed opinions better be that Malkin was the generational talent out of Russia over OVI. OVI. Like on his merry way to break the GOALS RECORD. You said ovi was merely a franchise player! No I will never let this go
yes Shannon thanks im happy for level headed some fans can be outright ridiculous also i think it's awesome sometimes fans take this sport to seriously thanks for showing me how to me pick out jerseys i have My Teams Ducks & Avs(Reebok, Adidas and CCM) in My Collection
I’m 2 months late on the response, but here goes. I own a dry cleaners, as nd have worked on many hockey jerseys, my own included. For the warped front logos, I use a large steam utility press and the logos come out quite nicely. Find a reputable dry cleaners in your area and they can make it good again
“They might watch part also includes players, it includes people from organizations” Not to mention your friend Michael Bublé, who shall remain nameless
That's not age, that's success! You no longer feel the *need* to make sure every jersey is the best deal ever. You have so many that even a Reebok edge jersey isn't going to ever fall apart
NHL players really don't suck! I played recreational ice hockey with retired NHL players for two seasons - in a normal practice we had between 2'000 to 3'000 NHL games and several Stanley Cup rings on the ice. As well as Mikael Granlund played in one of my friends' birthday party ice hockey game. The difference between the regular and the NHL player is huge. When you can play with somebody who used to play in the NHL you realize every shift how good they must have been. Their timing and accuracy are just off the charts. There are situations where a pass is only available in a split second and only works with the correct tempo - and these guys find you most of the time. The first time I played with Jari Kurri, they told me to just keep the stick on the ice and smile - I scored five goals. Not because I was good, no, because I kept my stick on the ice. When Granlund and a regular beer league player jump for a puck - he will be 5 steps ahead of you after 10 steps. No kidding. Most of the times there is a reason when an NHL player "sucks". Injury, wrong fit, bad self-esteem etc. There is that much money on the line that NHL teams simply can't afford to dress players who "suck".
My 7 year old watches when I do because of the cats! I keep telling him they just sleep most of the time (because cats) but I think he's waiting for them to do something exciting.
Just to prove your #1 overall point, Donald Brashear, ex-Canucks and Ex-Canadien, scored above 1 point a game in the AHL. And towards the end of his career, he was also above 1 point a game in a league similar to the ECHL in his late 30’s. He could have scored a lot more but he stacked up so many fights and misconduct that he was barely on the ice...
