Conan 1812 totally agree. I would hazard a guess that training has been scaled down on several levels to satisfy certain political segments of the city. Plus the city’s massive bureaucracy certainly doesn’t help.
1. quality 2. design (at least some of them) 3. marketing 4. marketing 5. marketing 6. marketing 7. marketing 8. marketing......... and many more marketing "s"
@@TheDryDown i agree, without 1&2 you never got the iconic status like Rolex but with 3-8 you can generate a lot of money for a short time like Daniel Wellington...
Not all are marketing. Having the company be completely vertically integrated (down to the metallurgy) really has nothing to do with marketing strategies other than the fact that it’s something to brag about and is quite an achievement.
I went to my AD today. In the window they had three stainless steel sea dweller models. There was a tiny sign with for exhibition only. Yet all the other non stainless steel sports models had prices attached. Fine but then you can then buy all the ss sports models at the independent nearby for twice the price?
Last week the Brisbane Ad only had a white dial Oyster Perpetual plus lots of 36mm Datejust . Everything else is wait list which very from 6 to 9 months to 6 plus years,
Lots available in Singapore, at inflated pricing. Many of which came form ADs in North America. It’s total BS. SEIKO and Omega for me now, Rolex has lost me as a fan and customer.
Dont worry, you can openly admit that the whole point of this video is trying to rationalize and justify your next Rolex purchase in front of yourself...
You are so right, when you wear a Rolex, it gives you a special feeling, it doesn’t matter if anyone else knows you’re wearing it, it’s special for YOU and makes you feel good, that’s what it’s all about.
Congrats in advance Tristano for The Urban Gentry 5th anniversary and many more years to come.. tq for the channel and your endless enthusiasm in horology.. 👍👍👍
Rolex watches are like luxury brand cars, e.g. Ferrari as the prime example. Ask anyone to think about a supercar or superwatch and most will say these names. Because of this widely known status and fame, some people may find it cliché and predictable, lacking originality and finesse. It has also become synonymous with the words "wealthy" and "rich." It has the in your face type of approach. Sort of like: "hey, look at me, im rich!" symbol. I would almost compare it with Mercedes cars, because how notorious and infamous they have become with drug dealers and the wrong target group, tarnishing the brand. It's important to know if a Rolex suits you, because it's like a double-edged sword. It either compliments you or degrades you.
Hey Tristano would love to see an updated recommended list of Seiko 5's for the budget enthusiasts. Cheers from Málaga, Spain!! Congrats on your channel, C'ent Anni.
imphillip 95 Cheers mate, I spent last December a faboulus week in Malaga. You are lucky to live at this excellent place of great food, wine and culture. And not to forget the pleasant weather.
Enjoy your Air King. It's understated, classy and goes well in any occasion. I've had one for about 25 years and will never let it go. FYI - there's a product called PolyWatch that removes scratches from the crystal (assuming the crystal is plastic which mine is). I was amazed at how well it worked. Scotch Brite also works well to remove any scratches from the oyster bracelet although I try not to use it too often. I realize that some prefer to leave the battle scars on.
I would love to see a Milgauss on the channel. I just bought my first automatic watch (Orient Defender) and I'm loving it. Thank you for making these great videos.
I remember buying my first Rolex. It was such a wonderful moment looking at the movement moving and just being in awe at how beautiful it was. Simple like you say but everything is done so meticulously ......and then putting it on and walking around Madrid with one of the biggest smiles I have ever had. My guess for your next Rolex... THE Rolex Daytona Cheetah
Quick question as someone who's been on the fence about Rolex a long time: Do you get a lot of (not so good) looks when you wear one? I think they're beautiful watches, and I've wanted one for some time, but I always worry about the message I'll be sending to people around me. Do you ever worry about wearing a brand that is so associated with wealth and opulence?
Please advise how to buy a new Rolex Submariner. Apparently, they are not in stock everywhere I go. Any tips would be appreciated. I just got to the point in my life where I can buy one, but they don't have them. Thanks
Great video, TVG. I knew Hugo would interrupt your call :-) Your intros are amazing. The Rolex Oster Perpetual, in gold and steel, is my top dress watch. I wear it with a suit or tux when I am out with my wife.
Now you’ve done it!. I have been planning a major watch purchase for a long time (Omega), but I think you have just put me back on track, reminding me of why I love and admire Rolex ( thanks TGV!!) I think I have just got to get a Rolex Explorer instead.
TGV, great video. Your production quality is just continually improving, impressive! I'm not at all a Rolex guy myself, but this was a great video to learn about the history of arguably the most important brand in the world. I'd love to see you do a similar video on Omega, my favourite non-haute horologie brand.
4:41 Has to be the Oyster Perpetual in 36 mm, because its actually the only Rolex that has style to it and doesnt look crappy and is well proportioned. Go crazy guys, Im waiting...
After watching your channel for about a year now, I was able to recognize a Rolex Submariner on Robert Redford's wrist when I saw All the President's Men a couple days ago. I remember thinking, how can a reporter afford that watch? Unless I step into some very good fortune, I would not consider spending so much money for a wristwatch. But, after getting a Squale 1521 Atmos Blue this week, I'm considering a 20 Atmos Militaire just because I like the subby style so much.
Rolex doesn't make watches, it makes emotions and feelings 🙏 Even if I fall in love woth other watches and apreciate them, I always come back to Rolex. Masters of marketing, masters of being there when great achievements are made. The connotation of Rolex with adventure, pioneering and success is unbeatable 💪🙏
Very cool Rolex summary. I'm going to guess your next Rolex is going to be a 2018 datejust with Roman numerals. However, I could be miles off of course. Very curious to see your next Rolex addition! Congratulations on the channels 5th anniversary. O&U! Regards, Koen
And the number one watch brand that lives its’ life in a safety deposit box is?.....Rolex! Where’s the value in that? Don’t get me wrong...I love a lot of Rolex watch designs and appreciate the work that goes into them. If I was wealthy, I would probably own one. But to pay that kind of money only to see it in a bank and not on my wrist would be a poor value for me indeed. My small, humble collection is based on the love of the watch, how I feel with them on, how they remind me of a special moment in my life or a special person. They give me joy when they are on my wrist. To me, that’s value.
I believe it’s time for I to hunt for my first Rolex. Also FYI thank you so much for re kindling my love for watches. I have recently bought quality watches due to your videos, ranging from Tudor, omega, and Breitling ! Though my first and favorite watch is a sieko automatic diver watch back in 1991. The day I graduated from boot camp , MCRD! That watch i wore in the entire 6 years of service and to this day is still ticking! It’s a outstanding watch ! Keep them rolling my man.
Add to film list. The Bourne Legacy. Aussie factory boss in Manila wears gold Daytona. Frank pays for his escape on Philipino freighter with it at the very end.
TGV - Stellar video. Loved the sketch with Sean and Hugo. For your next Rolex, I’m going to rule out the Daytona as the wait is insane from ADs and the secondary market is bananas at the moment. Could it be a white dial OP in 36mm? Beautiful simplicity with alluring charm, yet unlike any Rolex in your collection.
Thank You again TGV, I’ve just taken delivery of a Rolex Explorer 36mm, and I am really happy. Rolex is my favourite brand for all sorts of reasons, so thanks for getting me back on the right track.
And I do wish you'd give the microbrand Zelos a look. I think you'd be impressed with their work. I have multiple models from them I'd be happy to loan you for the asking.
The OP 39 with the grey sunburst (or maybe the white) dial is one of my grails. Also the only Rolex of the ones I know that I really like. (I don't know that many though). I don't really fancy the arabics on the explorer, the case on the submariner, or the bezel on the datejust.
Even the Tudor have some quality of the Rolex especially in rotating bezel ! I have BB and I tried the new seamaster 300 professional and the the Tudor’s bezel far better than omega i was surprised !
Good choice in my opinion, also bought it 2 years ago as my very first luxury watch. Couldn’t think of another one while I was looking at watches on the market (and for my budget)
I worked my ass off for 2 years to be able to buy my Rolex, I work in aviation, always wanted to be a pilot but 90.000euros to get my dream job was too much, but still I am a true lover of aviation, I have my PPL, fly ULM and single engine plane ( C 182 ) anyway, always wanted a Rolex since I' m 20yo, today at 27yo, I bought 2 months ago my Air king precision blue dial sun burst, a beauty !!! I am " over the moon with it ". Ofc I am a happy owner of 15 other watches, Sinn, Zeppelin, Vostok, Frederic Constant, Hamilton, Bulova, no seiko I hate seiko.... just kidding I have 4 seikos, but Rolex, wow, a french Ass H said one day "Si à 50 ans on n'a pas une Rolex, c'est qu'on a raté sa vie" talking about Sarkozy's Rolex, for some reasons I told my self, this guy is kinda right, (actually just gave me an reason to buy a Rolex). One day I will give my watches to my kid and I am so happy that he/she will own my first Rolex, because watches is also about giving to the others, when the time is right.
Arnold Palmer, the "King" of golf was one of Rolex's first brand ambassadors starting in 1967. In 2014 Rolex extended the relationship for 10 more years...Mr. Palmer was 85 at the time.
Quality and design are the main reason I'm getting a Sea Dweller - although some may say it's boring, I find the understatedness of it absolutely astounding. The WWII history part I also find very touching - that they sent out watches to POWs and said "Pay us for the watch when the war is over" is just awe inspiring for a company to do.
316L is MORE scratch resistant and less corrosion resistant than 904L steel, which is generally softer and actually easier to machine. Price difference is negligible. It was chosen because of its superior corrosion resistance. Every alloy containing iron will eventually corrode when left to the elements. Only precious metals like gold and platinum in their pure form are truly stainless by nature, but too soft to be used as wearables. Something like 18k gold is hard enough at 75% (18 parts of 24) actual gold by mass. And so on...
Thank you sir! You are a true gent for taking the time to post such kind words, onwards and upwards my friend. You inspired me today. Best regards, TGV
Extremely funny, informative and well done video! Thoroughly enjoyed it! I’ve worn my only Rolex (Air King - circa 1990) for about 25 years (pre-owned) every day, and still find myself staring at it. It has a sort of simple elegance to it and it seems to look even better as the years pass. As far as my guesses: 1.) Datejust 36mm with a blue dial on the Jubilee bracelet. I’d say fluted bezel, to balance the collection, but guessing it will be the domed. 2.) Yacht Master 37mm with maybe the Rhodium dial. Will never let go of my Air King but hope to someday own one of those grail watches. Cheers and keep up the nice work. New subscriber, but a big fan.
Over a month later and my OP39 has not needed any adjustments - its been keeping perfect time (not exaggerating). Worth every single penny of the MSRP. I do not regret not buying anything else. Now I am thinking new 36mm DJ two tone (fluted bezel - jubilee, champagne dial with lumed indices) as my 2nd - for more formal occasions.
My favorite intro to date. Great satire with Connery and Hugo. Not a bad Connery. Nicely done Sir. 😂😂😂. I have been thinking about the white Polar Explorer II or a Milgauss. Excellent vid TGV. All the best Sir. 🤔 for you? Air King.
The best reason to get another Rolex is because you'll enjoy it and can afford it. It doesn't matter what anyone else things. You're aware that part of a Rolex's value is how well Rolex sells the legend of Rolex. It's the brand most likely to be known by those not into watches as a luxury watch. THey do such a good job, that even making as many watches as they do (while keeping the quality level high and consistent), they still can't meet demand. I don't think they really want to even if they could. Knowing you'll have to wait for certain models is part of keeping that legend going.
I had a rolex that could not keep time. It was literally accurate just twice a day. Each time I brought it in, it cost me several hundred dollars to service. Plus, the band was uncomfortable, and it would fog up for no reason. I ended up selling it for a huge loss, and buying a Pulsar quartz, which keeps perfect time, is comfortable and has 0 issues. Never again. I won't waste my time.Or my money.
Many of your points are valid. But Rolex does not have, to best of my knowledge, the UGI unlocked crown indicater. "In 1994 Gevril launched its first watch collections of the modern era and, in doing so, the company wanted to contribute something new to the legacy of movement safeguards. Gevril watchmakers focused on the area of the watch that is typically the most vulnerable - the hole in the case for the winding stem below the crown, a relatively large opening that is used regularly to adjust the time and date, or to wind the watch." IMO this valuable feature is yet equaled in other makes!
I've bought many Seiko 5's over the years and never had a problem. I bought a Rolex and it stopped working after 6 months. Never again. Screw watch snobbery. Just buy Seiko or Orient. Maybe Oris or Longines at a push. No need to spend any more than £1000 on a watch.
I love Rolex because of pretty much ever reason you gave. But for me my Rolex is even more special because it was passed to me by my father. Yes, its only a GMT Master Pepsi from 1996 (retrofitted with a Coke bezel insert...still have the Pepsi insert). But it belonged to my father (still alive and with us and expanding his own collection, by the way). He was the one who started me collecting watches. He's the one who sparked the interest. And he's my personal hero......one of very, very few people I look up to. So my Rolex is very special to me, and my love of the brand comes from him. And what do I think you're getting as the next Rolex? I'm going to aim high and say either some form of Daytona, or a Presidential. Either one in a precious metal.
I can see a 36" Day Date. I've been looking at them a lot myself, as there are some real deals out there. Gorgeous watches that are undervalued since they're just a bit smaller than the current over sized fashion.
I have a current version Explorer 2 black dial and love it. For me, this one, the Explorer and Milgauss are the only Rolexes that don't scream "Rolex!" when you wear them. This is what has put me off getting a Sub or GMT 2. Accessibility I don't see as an issue as you can't blame high demand. But imo, arch rival Omega offers more on innovation, technology, horology, value and, for the above reasons, image. Omega to me is the more likeable brand.
Tgv your getting a milgauss. A explorer took time for me to grow and now my favorite Rolex . Same as milgauss , it took time but that small detail of second hand and green sapphire glass . I think we’re on the same page , it been growing on me 👍🏼😀
I hope you come across this comment one day, I've just bought my first "higher end" watch, which is the new Omega Seamaster diver 300, and I am on love with that beautiful watch, and I hear everyone says that the speedy pro. Is a must for any watch collection, I am saving already for my new piece aiming for the Rolex Submariner, do you think that as I already got a diver watch I should get the speedy in terms of diversity and also the appreciation of a masterpiece, or spend 3 times the price of the speedy on another diver the "Submariner"?
Hello TGV, WoW five years where did the time go . . May 4th. I remember those early videos, well done reaching five years. Looking forward to seeing the new acquisition. Can you imagine what the research and development section of Rolex would look like? Incredible. ⌚️⏱🍾🥂🍻
