Five years ago, I fell in love with the Rolex Explorer. Today I revisit this watch to better understand its significance, why it became my favorite, and to see how my perceptions about it have changed.
I take an in-depth look at its history, how it compares to other Rolex watches, and why it’s a trendsetter. I also explore its strengths, weaknesses, cult status, and worldwide fame. Finally, I share why I believe this is the real James Bond watch, and not the Rolex Submariner or the Omega Seamaster. So, pour yourself a drink (perhaps a martini, shaken or stirred!) and join me to find out if five years later, this is still the best watch ever made by Rolex.

I've just literally carried out the decision to reduce my unnecessary materialistic items that I've acquired over the years. So many around me are going through hard times, health issues, the passing of loved ones, and the effect of CV19 on top of all of that, with the effect it has been having on their businesses and/or employment, left me thinking that all of the tattles acquired over the years were a guilty pleasure, nothing more, sometimes even thinking they were in bad taste due to gathering dust while people I cared about struggled with life in general. So I came to the decision that 1 watch was all I needed as opposed to the collection of Rolex I hoarded (for want of a better description). Decision made and enter stage left, the 36mm white grape Oyster Perpetual, the 1 that stayed, everything else moved on to new homes. It's still a Rolex, still something to be handed down when I eventually move on, but it's a do it all watch with that twist of being a bit different as a result of my choice of dial colour. Funny thing is, I actually don't miss the others like I thought I would. These changing times have certainly shown me what's important and what's not so important.

Rest in peace Mr Connery. James bond is my favourite movie series sad to see him go 😔. On another sad note, my dad damaged his speedmaster, and has a massive repair bill to deal with. Edit: the independent shop charged $80 AUD whereas omega charged $1100 aud

unfortunate that your early comment no longer stands now that the two-tone Explorer is a reality - nothing is sacred anymore ;-)

As far as commander Bond goes, realistically he would be more likely to be issued an omega.. Mike drop!

I was recently gifted an Explorer 40mm Ref 224270, and as a professional touring musician, I can honestly say its the perfect Rolex. One that will outlast me and go on to one of my sons.

You are interested in the 3,6,9 one watch possibility so you try on the 36mm. You decide it's way too small. You assume the 39 is it and you're all good. Not really. They are so far apart that you may not like the 39mm either! You could like and buy both! The 39mm wears like a very masculine modern sports watch. Somehow on wrist it dwarfs watches like the Hamilton Khaki 38 auto. The 36 wears like a bracelet and has all the charm you've read about. But if it' not your only watch, everything else you have will feel huge.

I hope you see this! I want you to know how much I appreciate you. My son and daughter--twins!--were born this year. I wanted to buy something heirloom quality within my tiny budget to share with them, but I had no idea what or how. Well, that changed today--because of your videos I decided on a watch, and I finally ordered my first, and likely only, proper watch: a hamilton khaki field auto. I know it might not seem fancy enough but it was in my budget and it hits all the history boxes I wanted. I'm so excited to help my children learn how to tell time on it as they get older.

Totally agreed. I started this hobby lusting for a modern submariner. Initially I couldn’t understand the allure the Explorer was supposed to have. After some time collecting cheaper watches and enjoying the hobby, the Explorer began to slowly grow on my preference. When the time came to buy my first Rolex I had to buy the 214270. And it’s an incredible daily watch. Quintessential classic tool watch design, understated, you can wear it with almost anything and it will look good. Absolutely accurate. Just a pleasure to wear everyday. Yes if I had to pick just one watch, that would be the Explorer.

Thank you for being you and bringing stunning quality content. The history, the level of comprehension, the attention to details, the artistic and humanist approach required to create the context to be able to discuss of those watches is found nowhere else on RU-vid.

I took an age to make my choice of my first really serious luxury watch, and eventually went for the Explorer 1 39mm this year. It grows on me more each day. Thanks for the great video once again TGV. It is really great to be educated even more on the watch's history and provenance.

A number of years ago one of my customers showed up wearing a new Rolex. We started to discuss the brand as I’ve had a GMT since the 70s. He mentioned having an older Rolex he wanted to sell which turned out to be the Explorer. I was a bit disappointed when I opened the box because I was expecting the Explorer 2 but instead saw what I think was ref.1016 Explorer. The watch was in great shape but not what I was expecting… he was asking a fair price but I mentioned that it was not what I expecting. I offered to buy it for less and it became mine. I wasn’t and haven’t been wearing my GMT because I’m a bit hard on watches so I started wearing the Explorer. It didn’t attract attention and it was a bit smaller then a GMT or submariner. The lugs were quite narrow as though the case had been polished too much but in reading up on the ref.1016 they looked the same. The watch grew on me and I had also purchased a Zenith El Primero De Luca as I couldn’t find or purchase a Rolex chronograph. Unfortunately the Explorer somehow got away from me and has disappeared from sight… it may show up some day in an old pants pocket or an old suit I can’t fit into.

I always enjoy hearing your opinions on watches as you change your perspective during this watch collecting journey. I noticed that you made several videos on the same watch, but it's always different due to your change in perspective. It's very fascinating and something that I relate to. Always enjoy your content, cheers.
