I don’t put anything back in my closet if it needs washing, steaming, ironing, etc. (even shoes that need polishing, resoling or other work). I just leave anything that needs attention in my laundry area, with moth-prone silk, wool and cashmere in ziplock bags, until I have time to do what’s needed, which I do in batches. Anything ironed or steamed needs to be aired and dried before wearing, anyway, damp garments crease much too easily and shouldn’t be put into tight storage, even an open closet full of clothes. I have a fan in my laundry area to speed that drying up. I began the habit of having everything in my closet ready to wear when I started my career and needed to look my professional best every day. I maintained this habit, which simplifies getting dressed so much, everyday!
Yes, the evening prep is essential, too, I always get my outfit ready at night, underwear, shoes, coat and all. First I check my calendar and the weather, then try to pick an outfit I haven’t worn before, or style one with recently-neglected items, to rotate my wardrobe more.
I love wearing silk for many reasons: it’s soft, breathable, resists soiling/odors, doesn’t wrinkle and is both very low in bulk, lightweight, washes easily and dries super fast, all important for travel. Silk items rarely need washing unless there’s a spot, grime like on a cuff or collar, or they were heavily sweated in. They only need one initial ironing to remove packing/shipping wrinkles, after that it only needs a gentle wash (my machine’s “hand-wash/delicate” cycle and hang dry! Knitted silk (silk jersey) items that have more weight can be dried flat on a towel, so that they don’t get shoulder creases from hangers. Using a slow wash/rinse and spin speed is important for natural fibers, to minimize wrinkling. Silk and wool/cashmere only need a light steaming to look ready-to-wear again.
I don't work anymore and frankly I wear casual clothes around the house; what I have been doing though is making sure my others clothes are classic and interchangeable so I don't need as much; my closet is always a work in progress.
