If you say, “ it looks ok”, or “it’s not that bad” rather than “oh, wow, I LOVE this, I feel great in it!”, don’t but it, no matter how much or how little it costs!

Absolutely. I just put a 60% off shirt back on the rack because it was "okay," rather than WOW. I'd rather save that $20 and put it towards a wow item - and save my closet space too. Following this philosophy has made getting dressed everyday easy as pie as I love everything in my closet.

Right....I recently put back on the rack a gorgeous fuchsia sweater because even though it was size S, it swallowed me up. Killed me to do so, but happy with my decision in the end. I've become a lot more discerning in my purchases because of video's like this. So, thanks!

Poor fabrics are an epidemic, even for those of us who sew. I am always on the hunt for thrift store garments which I can remake as the fabric is so much better. Even inexpensive dresses from 20 or 30 years ago are much better quality. And linings, so many garments do not have a lining.

I’m older and have been shopping for clothes for a long time and the poor quality you get for the amount of money you have to pay is criminal. Value for money is so much harder to come by. And sometimes I think H&M should stand for Hit or Miss. Sometimes you get decent to good quality and at other times the quality is just not there.

I'm 68. I keep comparing the clothes I bought in the 80s to today's, expecting to get the same quality at the same price, and it just isn't logical. For example, I used to pay $100, on sale, for a nice dress of high-quality material. In 2023 dollars, $100 in 1984 would be worth $300 now. I almost fainted when I realized how much in relative money that I used to pay for clothes. I'm trying to overhaul my expectations of how much clothes that I used to buy would cost today; it's hard! I feel terrible even thinking of spending $300 on a dress. But that's the relative value of what I used to spend. My head is reeling.

@@edennis8578: I'm 76 years old and feel exactly the same way. In other words; comparing what once was to that of today there is even a distinction between fabrics, workmanship etc. and the price can be very inflated if one hasn't experienced what 'quality' really is.

I think it’s interesting how you point out that see thru fabric tends to look cheap. I agree and in plus sizes, this problem is even more widespread where they skimp on fabric. Plus size options have become more available, but I still think finding quality fabric and cuts is really difficult in plus size. Cheap, ugly and matronly is easy. Cheap, tacky and slutty is also surprisingly easy. Finding quality classics is shockingly hard.

@@anitas5817 and finding natural fibers? Nearly impossible. Everything is synthetic. Even the clothes that you think should be cotton like simple t-shirts are synthetics that are not breathable. I get so mad when brands that claim to be ethical, affordable modern classics are not size inclusive and stop at a size 12. That tells me they don’t want people above a certain size wearing their clothes. That maybe being above a certain size detracts from their image. Like where is Quince for plus size?

I don't buy much anymore from "fat girl" catalogs for exactly that reason. I found that catalogs for regular sizes, but who offer plus sizes, are MUCH higher quality for the same price, sometimes even less. Plus with sales, I can get higher quality clothes for almost nothing, especially when I utilize online coupons and go through the Capitol One shopping portal. Or Rakuten. Example: I bought t-shirts and pants from Land's End for 70% off, with additional 10% off from the Capitol One portal.

Just to add, shoes from the fat catalogs are waayyy overpriced for what they are. I've been buying my shoes, real quality leather in wide width, on deep discount from Land's End, Talbots, Soft Surroundings, and Amazon (big brand names). I feel stupid for ever buying the cheap plastic shoes from the fat catalogs.

You are right about the jeans. The fake-fade is awful. The pink pants are a winner! Pink is a happy color. You cannot go wrong with pink, most of the time. I just got a 2nd pair of light pink slacks, since the first pair, a medium pink, is my fav. I wear pink, and I get happy.

Agree with the not-supposed-to-be see through fabrics looking cheap. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a garment not be see through in white when none of the other colours are remotely see through. Some brands will line their white version of items which makes them much more wearable. Other obvious signs of poor quality: seams that don't hang straight even in the store, wool-ish garments that are fuzzy/pilling just from being looked at in the store, poorly stitched buttonholes/buttons already ready to fall off before you've even left the store, ditto hems that poorly stitched with way too big stitches so that they'll snag and fall down if you look at them sideways.

the problem I have with H&M is that most of the stuff looks so very "H&M" and it always cheapens the item. Fabric quality is everything in a garment. Since I stopped buying plastic fabrics my wardrobe has definitely made several steps up the classy ladder. Rule of thumb for white trousers/jeans is getting them always 1-2 sizes bigger. Few things look cheaper than tight whites.

✨️Also, lighter color jeans use higher heat in the washing process and it naturally shrinks the weave. That's why white denim tends to be tighter than the same pair in blue. 😊

I think the black and white H& M dress looks cool and good. It might not look super high quality- but the thing is, that a lot of expensive brands use ‚ cheap‘ fabrics, too. The sell 100% polyester blouses for a lot of money.. and this get s up my nose. So keep the dress, it s flattering, looks stylish.

Thanks for the video. May I encourage viewers who might be on a budget or who might want to started budgeting (to perhaps pay off credit cards, especially since interest rates are skyrocketing) to shop their closet and dresser drawers! Another tip- you do t always have to buy something new to wear to a special event or outing. I always felt as though I needed a new outfit when going “out” to a show or dinner party- and, this weekend - instead of spending money / charging my credit card- for something new, I put together an outfit from my closet and wore a blouse I hadn’t worn in years- the outfit looked and felt brand new and no one would have known the difference rather or not I was wearing something new or “very old!” Only I knew that! My husband complimented me on my outfit- and I was rather proud to inform him- the blouse was at least 20 years old! I rarely ever wear it, it’s one of those styles that’s classic, and the dark blue color is stunning!

Also, cheaply made clothes wear out and look tattered, and hence “old,” but well made clothing (that are “classic styles”) can last for years and still look “new.” So, I am not buying as many cheap clothes, especially tops, like I use to do- to be on “trend.” Those classic, well made, shirts/blouses/tops, are far better than cheap clothes that I have to recycle/give to goodwill within one year or one season!

That tends to work if you are consistent on your size. I’m currently letting go of the weight so what fit last year is too big. I tend to hit sales and if it’s not in my size then oh well. I went from a 24 to a 16 and still shedding the weight. I don’t keep much in my closet so something nice takes a special occasion to buy for me. Good suggestion though.

I totally agree with "shop your closet" first. I now feel quite justified in not following the advice to get rid of items you haven't worn recently because guess who's been rocking her own old clothes from the 70s to 90s over the last two years? Saved me so much money too.

I think high quality is a better descriptor than expensive. Example, the first top looks a lot higher quality in green than it does in white. And I've seen plenty of expensive items that weren't such great quality.

Thank you for the video. It's very rare if ever I shop at Target. I totally get that there is a need for inexpensive tops for the baby to spit up on or whatever. I will pay for the tailoring and wear the item forever. It will pay me back by it's performance and looking great. I would have 1 fantastic piece than 20 items that just "make due".

At the weekly market in my town they sell a lot of cheap clothes with all the frills - sheer fabrics, plastic lace, string ties, cut-outs, flared sleeves, sparkly things, patches, fringe, gathers, and actual frills - so those always looks cheap to me. I stick to the stalls with cheese and stroopwafels. Cheers!

I love a banded bottom top, as a size 10 hourglass shape. They really accentuate my waist while not being too small for my large bust. I have a lot of luck with that style at Express.

Thanks for another great video, Anna. I think fabric is very important. And not just the way it looks in the shop, but the way it washes - which can be tricky to predict. Last year I spent a lot on two very plain T shirts - one orange, one white - in high quality cotton. I don’t regret it: the fit is good, they wash well, and I get a lot of compliments when I wear them. Anyway. Today I got out my 5-year-old bomber jacket from Marella. It is in thick navy blue lace, embroidered with flowers in light blue, light yellow, and red. I wore it over a light blue turtleneck, with washed black jeans. Boy, did I feel good going to the flea market on my bike!

When you look at pics from folks anywhere past the 1960’s there clothes always seemed to look so much nicer and better quality and better fitting. Even people who were obviously working class poor had nice clothes because they made their own clothes and were fitted to their bodies.

I think I'm done with white jeans. I tried on a pair at Loft that fit great but I could CLEARLY see the pockets and garmet label through the denim! What in the world? It looked so cheap and they were nice jeans! I loved this video and was sad when it ended because I was enjoying it so much. I found a pair of white jeans that are not see though at the Banana Republic Factory Store last year and they are fantastic! I definitely recommend looking there if you don't want to give up on the search for the best white jeans.

Oh yes the elastic seam on the red blouse is what I mean, sometimes cheap polyester, or fast fashion seam solutions and than 100 bugs. Wow.. I really think that sometimes the rage between bargain prices and high prices still use the same fabrics and sewing patterns.. so bad.

Love the video. Good point, I am with you. Why buy clothes that look cheap. I will give you one my pant hacks. If you find yourself between sizes, compare the garment in the same size. I found as much as a 1 inch difference. Just line up the waist bands and compare.

Personally, I prefer purchasing quality items over getting a deal. And if I ever buy anything from Zara, it’s either a linen piece for summer or a well-made coat. And if I ever bought anything cheap, those clothes just ended up in the donation pile 🤷🏻‍♀️

A very interesting video! When you try something on and are trying so hard to convince yourself something that deep down you know is not worth it and you won't wear, walk away and find something awesome. Like you said there are lots and lots to choose from. Why waste time on something that is 'Meh'? And no, that top was not worth the $100 price tag. And the white jeans would be tricky. That size was a little snug but I bet the next size up didn't fit that well either. The Thanks for sharing your experience and expertise. Helps the rest of us from making the same mistakes. 😊

I personally liked the black and white dress from H&M on you a lot. Regarding white jeans, can you please do a video on what to look for when purchasing white jeans and maybe compare white jeans from various places? I've never found white jeans I liked and really, really want one.

There just nothing out there at this time that I am interested in adding to my wardrobe for Spring/Summer retail wise. Prices going up but quality is going down and everything is made in China. I agree that everything you shown here just look like something that you could get from old mall teen shop like Debs or anythng at that level. I like thrifting for this very reason but have laid off on that for months now because it just become a hoarding situation. Thanks for sharing and blessings to you and all in the days to come.

Manufacturers sometimes use fabrics of different composition in their different color offerings in a single style. I think this what causes the difference in fit, the black might be, say 100% cotton, but the white 2-3% Spandex (and the remainder cotton). I have so much trouble with even 1% Spandex fabrics stretching out, even during a brief wearing, although I never put clothes in the dryer. So, I’m only buying 100% cotton denim now, at least after washing, they do shrink back to fit, unlike the Spandex-containing ones. The ones with Spandex are also really difficult to hem and iron, which I have to do at least for the hemming process, I iron in each of the two turnings before stitching.

Your hair looks pretty today. Personally, I prefer the side to the middle part but isn't it fun to change it up? You're right those jeans with the horrid bleach spots look ugly and cheap! I love the yellow and white combination on you, looks happy! BTW I just saw your spring video and loved the short red with the metallic heel and navy dress on you, stunning!
