NEVER accept a counter offer. They will screw you later. Count on it. With the right skills you don't need to give ANY notice beyond today is my last day. Never tell an employer why you are leaving or do an exit interview. Employers don't like to get fired but they would fire you with no notice on a Wednesday at 3:30 PM if it suited their purpose. NEVER NEVER NEVER quit a job unless you have another job locked up or have amassed what I term as F.U. money. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS keep building your skills and be searching for your next potential job. A backup plan lets you sleep soundly at night. Never have your heart so set on something that you wouldn't accept something better !

I live the UK. I followed your steps and downloaded your resignation letter template. The class was oozing from my letter and after 5.5 years of working for this company I knew they would not be happy about my decision to leave but I thought they would be gracious and respectful. Boy was I wrong!!! The response from my Area Manager was more prickly than a cactus to say the least. I had some extra days that I accrued but not yet redeemed so I used those as part of my notice period which meant I only needed to work 3 weeks notice (my contract stated I have give 4 weeks notice). Their response was to tell me if I have found another opportunity and want to start immediately, they would be happy for me to leave immediately without working the 3 weeks notice. I accepted to leave with immediate effect. The tone of their communications to me was colder than an Alaskan winter. That was something I did not expect and honestly has left me kinda delicate because I put in some mileage for these people and made them some heft coin. Anywho….onto better things but one thing I have learned, no matter what NEVER bring sentiments into the job. Strictly business!

Hello ,Sam that type of coldness I could feel from here,it makes you wonder how people can just view a person as enemy of state instead of being gracious and respectful after 5.5 years. Strictly business! I honestly look at your situation ,myself and really anyone that works a company, owners will replace us without thought if it helps the bottom line,so no sentiment. In the end you know you,no explanation needed ,I wish and hope you are on a good path.

I have always given 2 weeks with the exception of my last employer. Every time someone put in their 2 weeks they were told to leave immediately. You should not put yourself in a position where you have no income for 2 weeks out of courtesy when you have seen that they would not do the same for you.

Excellent video! The process to resign starts long before the final resignation takes place. Fortunately I never had to deal with a counteroffer - agree that it should be turned down because the mind is set to move on at this point. I was also never asked to the reasons "why" I wanted to leave - I turned down upfront exit interviews which I highly recommend to ignore if asked to do. But I had supervisors who pressured me verbally to tell them where I will go. I calmly told them that I am not obliged to do so and did not give in. It is possible that they then cut you off from internal servers and files in the remaining two weeks of notice - fine, this is their weak attempt to put last pressure on, and I simply accepted this - I left with class. I left by not even telling colleagues where I went next - made a clear but polite cut. I highly recommend to leave silently and being less visible to peers in the last 14 days in the old job to avoid any kind of reasoning to be seen as bad-mouther. Another important thing: Focus own mindset on time to come and what happens next. Don't vest more energy on what bugged you in the last job, this is a closed chapter now.

The Friday before you give your resignation take all your personal items home. Be prepared for them to just let you go when you give your resignation; they will not want you potentially destroying files or anything else similar. If you really do not like the employer just walk out and I say that as a business owner. Companies want two week notices and it is a joke. NO employer gives an employee two weeks notice unless it is required by law such as the WARN act.

Thank you for the advice Andrew. I have been with my current employer for 10 years, have been an outstanding employee as far as dependability and performance. I have even been doing extra work on my machine for the past year and a half because the second shift operator was injured and never came back to work. The company never filled his position and more responsibilities has been shoved my way. But over the past year I haven’t had compensation or been allowed room for advancement in the company. So,with that being said now I am currently looking for a fresh start and new employment. I will use your advice to help me correctly give my current employer the two week resignation letter.

I got an ok offer from a premier competitor. Once I had accepted the offer I talked with my mentor about the reasons I felt I needed to depart. Within 2 hours of a call conversation we worked out a 25 % salary increase with the upper management . This was well over the offer from the competitor and had recently gotten some boots on the ground feedback about the new role I was going to be taking. I would say this was a 1 in a million chance but though I would share in case this could help anyone else. Point #1 make sure you want to quit been on both sides of the fence through my career and changes. Thanks Andrew

I'm forced to use my weaknesses, so I had to submit ADA accommodation paperwork. I've been in this position for only four months, and I want out already. I'm just too physically and mentally exhausted. I just don't have time and energy for job searching, networking, etc. I don't even know what career path or industry I want to pursue anymore. The Great Resignation has hit the publishing industry hard, with editors being totally fed up with exploitative labor practices. The editorial side of publishing is technically a white-collar sweatshop. On the other hand, the distribution end of the publishing industry-where I am right now-is straight-up grunt work a.k.a. manual labor, but it pays better than junior-level or midlevel editorial positions. So as much as I want to quit, it's hard to leave my current position and company because of the decent benefits (since day one of employment, and I want to use my dental insurance because I'm dying to get braces or Invisalign!), the pay (pretty decent for an hourly entry-level position), the steady work, and the great people I work with. I have yet to find a publisher- and author-facing position (a salaried one at that) in the company that would be a good fit. The available salaried positions so far are marketing, sales, and customer service, just to name a few, which are . . . meh.

Hi Andy. I changed the career successfully with your guidance, beginning from your resume ending now with interviewing for senior position in a small pharma company (200). Can’t thank you enough, I am living proof that changing career in age of 45 can be very successful with your mentorship ! Now I’m interviewing for senior position and strange thing is happening. I thought they were ghosting me but they actually are not, it just takes really slow to communicate back and forth. Strange thing is that next week is my first interview and it is 30 min phone call with Director of my future department that I will be reporting to. Why ? Not even HR screening ? I don’t understand ? What’s going on ? Would you share your expertise ?

Andy, most, if not the majority of, large corporations do not give live job reference checks. In most cases, it’s a 800 number you call to verify employment, and it’s a recording that verifies dates of employment and title, but it's not a live person to answer questions. You might have those one-off small companies that do it, but it's very rare these days.

I made a pay equity complaint. They let the HR person who made the decision to scam me be in charge of the investigation and make the determination. He decision was that it was okay to pay the oldest, most experienced, most educated person the least and lie and say it was the top of the range. I put in an ethics complaint. They are dragging it out while they have my boss, who has no management experience, quiet fire me. I have an offer for $15K more, to start in two weeks. I haven’t taken vacation yet this year and I want a week off in between. I’ve never given less than two weeks, but I am very tempted!

Just accepted a job offer for new employer. However, they will initiate the background check now. When should I tell my current employer that I'm leaving? I just want to make everything is fine on the background check. I have nothing to hide but I just want to be extra careful just in case something comes up. I don't want to be a scenario where I told my manager I'm putting in my two weeks but then the background/employment check comes in and doesn't work out.

Excellent question. You wait until the new employer gets back to you and tells you your background check is a greenlight. Then and only then do you let your current employer know you’re leaving. And, do not let your new employer force you into giving a shorter notice because you’re waiting on a background check. Good luck!

After going through an interview process and talking about salary and getting an initial offer that's way too low, how would you answer the question "what's the lowest you can do?" That question always makes me feel bad because they just want to do the minimum... I watched your "How to negotiate a lowball salary offer" and I think I know the answer. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I should have just walked away because they're basing the salary off the position, not my skills and abilities.

My friend, my answer would have been, “Thank you. Thank you for being so clear you a company who focuses on the bare minimum, which means we’re not a fit for each other.” I would have needed a shower after they said that to me. You’re with so much more. And I’m not even talking about money.

I understand we are not obligated to give any reason for resigning, but what if I am being coerced into speaking with a senior management person who wants to have "a chat".. it's really frustrating, especially when I have zero dealings with this senior management person throughout my career. Saying no would burn bridges.... saying yes would mean she will pry or try to fish for info. From the culture here, I can tell they won't take 'this is my personal reason' as an answer!

I work maintenance for a public school and have been tired of dealing with the board and my boss for four years now. I was hired as maintenance only but immediately I was made a sub bus driver which after lies about accepting a flex driver which is way more bus work than maintenance I was then put solely in charge of maintaining and setting up for games of the entire athletic facilities by myself and now I am also a custodian. 4 years ago I was in a bad motorcycle accident and broke a lot of bones including my spine being shattered. I am able to do maintenance and the athletic duties but driving a bus beats me into so much pain. After expressing this to my superiors I was told that I would not be allowed to even reduce my bus work and when I told them I was being overwhelmed by the amount of things I have to get done every day they threatened to just fire me. It’s not possible for anyone to do what I do and have everything finished and I get wrote up for things like this every October. I feel like I’m drowning for eight to fourteen hours a day. After coming home all I can do is lay down to let my back decompress or sleep. I am missing time with my family and I am currently making moves to depart. It’s really hard since this is the school I went to from k-12 and I grew up here. I know things about these buildings that no one else working there knows and I had a very hard time feeling like I matter at all. I don’t. While I was in the ICU they had a board meeting about firing me right away. I don’t understand the decisions they make and some of them I am suspicious of. It’s a shame that this is how jobs like this go for me these days but I am feeling a lot better after watching this video on how to let them know without messing up a record or cursing my reputation. Thank you for the video and to anyone who bothered reading this much.

But, I said to my boss that I am looking for another job (because of something they changed in my tasks, gave more tasks but not raise in the salary). And that is true: I immediately started to apply other jobs. I decided to find out what do they gave to offer. There is lack of workers on the field what I do, so good luck if I leave. They still have one post open in my workplace for the same tasks that I do but they haven’t got anyone in months! So good luck if I leave.
