Being in this exact situation right now, and by having watched your videos I know what to say to the company. The big difference to the "norm" is: this job was never posted, so there was no title or description for me to gauge the expected salary, they reached out to me and explained the responsibilities, they flew me for an interview and got back with an offer that included the title. The offer is within what the title pays in the region, and I plan to use your technique about the value I bring VS fixating on the title, plus some other of your suggestions.. Is it acceptable to respond and negotiate their email offer in writing, or is it better to do it on a call, this knowing that I express myself much better in writing?

I have been sending out resumes for well over 8 months with practically no success and I mean NONE. In that time, I have had only 2 interviews. SO, after finding you on RU-vid and watching video after video I decided to use your resume blueprint and four-sentence cover letter to totally transform my resume. Suffice to say, I was skeptical. However, since changing my resume to match your blueprint I now receive an interview for just about every resume submission. So... I wanted to say THANK YOU!

I just bust out laughing when they socialized the low ball offer. They were just out of touch with reality. They went back to the drawing table and came back with an offer I could take. Next time I'll follow your good advice.

All I did was follow your advice when a headhunter asked what I was looking for in salary. I said, “well, I don’t know until I find out all the…” bam, she gave me the $ range she had permission to offer and offered me the top. Previously, I’d just assumed the offer was all there was and took the offer. Third round of interviews and I’m using your tools. Thank you so much! Love your content! Helpful video! One thing I find is that through the interview process, company officials demonstrate their true colours especially when it comes to salary and compensation negotiations... with a lowball offer, that can often be a red flag as to how they will potentially treat you if you were to join the company. One has to review all factors of course but caution can be needed in these types of situations...

I just wanted to come back and say thank you for your time in producing these videos they helped me to feel way more confident with the counter for a low salary offer. The position was "budgeted" for a "max" amount and I used pretty much all of this to counter and they came back with my ask! Almost 20% increase in pay and there was no push back! It felt awesome! Thank you, Andrew! Now I'm looking at the how-to resign video!

@@doanphuong1325 Yes, So I watched this video and a few others so I anticipated the salary offer to come in low. I had a number in mind already that I thought would be fair and justified based on my skill set. The recruiter offered and I used Andrew's verbage exactly and he basically said that's what the job paid, BUT what were you looking for? I told him he took it and came back with a number much closer to what I asked for. I was happy the company was happy. I start in about 3 weeks.

I left a lengthy detailed write up here earlier this evening with the great success TODAY using Andrew's techniques,,,wonder what happened. His techniques work! Watch the vids make notes and prepare. The initial offer came in at the highest salary in their stated range on the job description, after following his techniques and the line in this video the revised offer was increased by 8% plus an additional 2 weeks vacay for a total of 4 🤘 Thank you Andrew!!!

When they are socializing an offer to you: * Don't socialize it back to them * Don't have any reaction * Get as much information as possible * Thank them * Ask how they come into the numbers, if it's based on the position or based on you

I would like to add, as a CX Analyst, I appreciate what you mean in regards to Sales vs retention, but without CX (and legitimate professionals), a subpar experience can tarnish sales and retention opportunities. In this climate, CX across the whole business is critical.

i got wickedly lowballed for a job. I negotiated for a couple thousand more, and because of my financial situation at the time, I then accepted, but I should have hit the exit door. DO NOT accept an insultingly lowball salary. It will nag and niggle at you, and cause your performance to decline.

Employers don't understand that when you pay well, you get happier employees who want to take on more responsibilities. Employers also lowball your payrate if you've been unemployed for a while, due to a layoff.

I just got a job offer that's 34,000 when I wanted 39,000-40,000. I know it doesn't sound like a big difference, but at this stage of my life it would make a HUGE difference to my life. It's an offer based on what the job is worth. Shall I take it?! I'm not sure what other benefits to ask for, apparently salary is non-negotiable when I asked.

I think that I began lowballed and now every promotion after that is based on an increase of that initial low offer. I'm trying to catch up to the market rate. I have lots of documentation of salary analyses from my job title in other companies. At the bottom of that number it would be a 38.4% increase from what I'm making now. And why do I deserve the bottom?! I have a proven track record of success and I am a 2022 and 2023 outstanding employee award recipient.

I got an offer that was really low even when I tried to negotiate. Then got a great offer from another employer. So when I denied the offer from the previous company, they matched the other company and gave me the role I wanted. I still rejected their offer again. I felt uncomfortable to accept it because they didnt want to give me what I wanted to begin with the first time and when I found someone else, they gave me more than my original salary i wanted. I felt like if i was getting paid more than everyone else, I would have to out perform or stand out else they would fire me after 90 days and bring someone in way cheaper. What do you think? I loved their culture and atmosphere and would have loved to work there but the other company gave me a great offer the first time without having to negotiate

If you felt uncomfortable with the revised offer, then I'd say you made the best choice. No one wants a higher salary and a target on their back.

I would've done same thing. Even if you perform better than others as the most pricey employee, it's likely you will be the first one they will let go if they like to play such a game. And it will be just extra unnecessary stress to deal with for me.

I see low ball offers as a red flag. Personally, I would say no. They said a lot in that gesture about how you are valued. Just my opinion.

Andy, thank you for the great video! A question for you-when I try to negotiate/counter, should I be vague and leave it up to them to revise their figure? For example “based on the value I would bring in XYZ ways, I was expecting a bit more/something that is fair”? Or is it better to be direct in what I would be happy with? I don’t want to lowball myself out. How should I respond to “how much are you looking for?”

When you counter you should be specific about what you want but be flexible regarding how that help you achieve the number.

I received an offer that is less than what I made in my previous position and I will also be paying for insurance which was not an expense I had with my previous company. I am working as a remote employee in an area that is less expensive than the city in which the company is located. I was told they had just restructured their pay ranges based on the market just this past month. The recruiter said that the hiring manager felt I was a strong enough candidate to put me toward the top of the pay scale for this Senior position. I am new to this role but not new to the industry and have over 15years of experience in the interpersonal skills they are looking for. Would it be a turn-off if I countered to my current salary which is about $15K more than their offer?

Andrew, these are excellent. I have very little experience being interviewed. I used your tips for resumes and cover letters. I sent them to the HR dept. at a company I am applying for and had an almost immediate response. The VP of Estimating had a phone interview with me. All seemed very lined up. He acknowledged that my exp (~28 years of estimating) made me a good candidate for SR. Estimator. He emailed me and encouraged me to call him again. I have done so but no response. Should I email HR again? I hope he didn't feel I was after his job. Thanks again,

I would simply follow the HR protocols. They should be communicating with you what the next steps are. I wouldn’t be overly concerned that he didn’t get back to you after you reached out to him directly.

I took the lowball offer coming off being let go (explained my situation and they understood, and loved my honest approach), but now it has been 18 months and I’ve proven myself a great deal and made myself pretty invaluable to the team. Does my initial acceptance set my trajectory with them permanently? Because I need to move into something market rate or higher. Trying to time a well-received ask.

How does one negotiate a raise at the top end of the salary range when their position does not bring in revenue but is more of a “soft” skill i.e. directing resident activities /programs and managing people?

when I initially had the phone interview, i did not provide a number, I asked for the range. I make a tad bit higher than the end point but asked if they would be willing to negotiate and they said it was based on experience. fast forward 4 interviews, i got an offer smack in the middle, the job ask for 2 years experience i have 10. i reiterated my skills and what i can bring to the position including additional responsibility. I asked for $7K over the high range. Their offer is a $7K lower than what I make now so I definitely could not accept it. i will see what the come back with. I am afraid to put a target on my back however want to be paid what i am worth and not have to take a pay cut.

Last week I was offered the job via email I wanted and they are calling me today with the official offer. When asked I told them I am seeking $250k all in with salary and commissions. They then brought me in for the third and final interview and I nailed it. So I hope today’s call will make me confident I will reach that $250k number next year. I work in sales in financial industry specifically asset management. I’m excited for the call

Could be pride talking but either case: 1. The person who is giving the offer has not made his/her job for the salary. 2. If they are interested in you and they provide a low offer, I can’t imagine the rest of the candidates. I had an interview where they asked me my current salary (it is easy to know where I live and not illegal to know), and they offered me a lower salary than I was earning. I felt that disrespectful. This problems could be solved if the first interview they tell you the salary we have is X.

@@andylacivita well I asked for "the whole package" and it was not attractive either (I remember they put the parking spot as a benefit haha). When I tried to reframe everything, they even mentioned that was the final offer. What I thought the case was is what you mentioned the pandemic makes people think they can get people on the cheap. I received a job offer from a new employer who offers me the same salary I am currently earning (my bad at responding what was my current salary during the interviewing process). How can I get a better salary? Should I mention that I received a counter-offer from a current employee or another company and request that the numbers be matched? What is the best practice in this situation?

I think when you are lowballed at the beginning it just shows what they think. Even when you told them i wouldnt accept a postion under 36 they tried to come in at 32 i felt insulted cause though i thought it wouldve been a good company to work for that lowball offer didnt sit right with me then they came back and offered 36 but i found something that paid 40 while they were busy with that dilemma. Sometimes the world just works out. Dont let a company undervalue a skillset especially when you know its a hard one to find and learn.

I had a strange job application in the past month, applied one famous airline for a treasury role, but unfortunately I was refused, but after two weeks, hr manager contacted me to reconsider me, and invited me to another digital interview, I did and passed it, after one day manager contacted me for personal interview, but after a few days, hr manager called me to ask salary expectation, I used your strategy, then she soon gave me their budget, and asked if this is my range, Andrew, do you know why everything is so strange? Refused and reconnected again, and called me to ask my salary expectation even before interview? She said she would let manager know!

I am in a dilemma. I did a recorded video interview and one of the questions was whether I was comfortable with a lower than I thought offer. I replied "yes" because I am a career changer and have no background in that industry. Also, I have been job-hopping due to caretaking and health issues. This is a for-profit business and they have no excuse to pay their entry-level employees that low salary range. I want to increase the salary up to $5,000 to be comfortable. Should I accept the offer for the experience or push for the increase?

GREAT VIDEO! I've been working as a contractor for about 10 months and they might make me permanent after my 1 year is up. Do I have an advantage to negotiate my salary since they've already seen my work? Or will I be low balled by the company because I don't have leverage?

Working as a contractor gives the company a chance to see your work and performance. You also get to experience the company, the challenges they face, etc. You both have an advantage of understanding what to expect from the other. In most cases, people should negotiate their salary. Such great content. I received a double low. I interviewed for a higher position going in that the company presented to me and even mentioned the cap on the position. After what I felt were successful and positive interviews, they came back with the next position down (lower) and a lower salary than they mentioned upfront. I will follow up with them following your advice; however, could you provide insight on why a company would do this? Why would they take me through great interviews and good interactions that they initiated and turn around and lower the position and salary? It feels like a bait and switch.

Hi Kim. Sorry to hear, but this is very common. I’m not sure if you’ve seen many of my salary negotiation videos but what you’re experiencing is one of the many reasons I don’t recommend job candidates or employers share salary info upfront. You go thorough the process and then assess how you fit together and at what level for position and comp. Their assessment of your experience at the end of the process happened to be below their initial assessment (when they had a lot less information about you). This isn’t a bait and switch situation as much as mismanaged expectations.

@@andylacivita Thanks for the response. I have seen many of your salary negotiation interviews, which are great. My situation was more complex than I wrote. When I first spoke with the recruiter, she knew my salary expectations upfront. The role she initially presented did not match with my salary requirements, which was okay for me to say no to. She returned a couple of weeks later with a higher role that fell within my salary requirements, which to my understanding was what I was interviewing for. After the interviews, they came back with a lower role and a salary lower than what we discussed upfront. That is what I consider a bait and switch rather than me being assessed at a lower level. Had she explained why then I would have been okay with the lower level as I'm not into titles, but she already knew my salary requirements. She came with a perspective of take it or leave it. In this case, I felt a little disrespected, like they wasted my time and were likely discriminating (in my field there is a lot of it). I think you and others have mentioned that it should be a collaborative experience. Nevertheless, I walked away from them to accept a new job with a different company at the same higher title the previous company offered for the pay that I was seeking 3 months later. In fact, a better company, better benefits and better package. And that experience felt and went like your videos described. Again thank you so much for your content, training, and invaluable services.

I’m having such a hard time finding a job that has decent pay. I’m a recent college graduate with a BA in Health Informatics. I applied for a entry level job with a medical company and they only offered me $14.50. I honestly feel like that was a major low ball because can’t nobody afford to live off of $14.50.

Sometimes, the recruiter just advises the jobs which are not matching your cv background. No chance to interview for the job which you want to apply for. I asked for the reason why advised me of the role, and there is no answer. Maybe simply because I am out of work?

That’s probably not the case. Recruiters want to fill their job openings as quickly as possible with a qualified candidate. It makes no difference to them if you’re working or not. In fact, some recruiters like it when someone isn’t working because they can usually start right away!!

I watched this 5 hours too late :( I got a lowball (in my opinion) offer of 85k USD here in Korea (with 12k USD bonus/annum), and I feel like my past experience and track record merit the industry average of around ~130k USD. I have a feeling that they are really interested and that im the one for them. Keep in mind, lots of times the employer is willing to go up or down depending on the skills of the candidate. That's why most don't designate a specific number!

Hey i got a problem. I am unemployed and about to get a job offer im a software engineer. But before they give me an offer it seems they are starting intense negotiations with me already. They are saying they can't offer me my expected salary or what i was getting paid my previous job and also they said they got bills to pay and what is the minimum i would take? @@andylacivita i got the offer i wanted...basically they paid me what i was getting paid my last job when initially said they couldn't. I think the main problem was me telling them my previous pay which is always a bad idea i thought because my previous pay was high it would be ok but they tried to undercut by 20% and then u negotiate up to your previous pay if you have the ability. I think the main tip and lesson everyone should do is never tell them your previous salary but tell them your expected range you want instead which you allowed to say a very high number whereas your previous pay you cannot lie about. If i didn't tell them my previous salary they would need to guess to lowball me and may probably guess high from the inflated expected number you give them. Next time i will say my current pay is confidential if it is a recruiter or if it is a hiring manager asking me I'll tell them i don't want my compensation to be judged on my current salary as that is the only reason why they ask u for ur current or previous pay

so what if: I took the offer, said thank you, and that I was happy, but I wanted to discuss futehter cost of living compensation and used that to discuss the salary. for example how according to the Bure of Labor Statistics, the location I am being asked to work at is 39% higher than the national average in cost of living and used that number to negotiate salary?

You can go back. It’s not ideal and that’s something you could have factored In before you agreed to their offer, but there’s nothing wrong with simply asking if there’s a possibility based on the substantially higher cost of living. Good luck!

Ashley. Of course, these are always possibilities but I want you to determine whether to take it as is based on your specific circumstances. If you’d like the company in the role and you need the job, then it’s a good idea for you to take it. If you feel like you want to hold out for more and can’t afford to do that by seeking out other options, then do that!

I think it's also a red flag if they fight you on your desired number as well but eventually give it to you. When it comes time for raises and promotions you'll constantly be told that you climbed the pay scale faster than any other employee and be shut down.
