My tip for traveling: Do not travel with friends from back home! Solo travel is the best kind of travel. You will find so many people along the way and the best part is that you arent stuck with them for the entire trip. You can say goodbye whenever you feel like it.

People would be amazed at how they can afford to travel if they make different every day choices. I have so many friends that say they can't afford to travel as much as I do (10 or so weeks a year), but they don't consider that I share a studio in the middle of nowhere, not live in a fancy building down town, I drive a shitty car that I own, not a brand new car with a 400+ a month payment, and I cook at home on the cheap, and usually don't go out to eat for a dinner that costs $15 (not that much, but when you do it every day it adds up). And I work a side bartending job for extra cash. Its all possible, it just depends on what you value more in your life. And I value traveling, that is no better or worse then what they value, just different.

Katrina Nogosek agree on all of that but a big point he hit on was vacation time. I can afford traveling because of those exact things you mentioned but I am only given 12 days a year. That's not even 2 weeks, which limits how much travel I can actually do. I know a lot of people who are affected like that
@KittyKatMN

That’s true, and a big factor in my career choice was flexibility in getting time off to do what I want to do.

Katrina Nogosek I choose traveling, too, over other things. I don't have much, but I do manage to travel. I cook at home, don't have a nice car--an old car actually--choose cheap places and budget my food expenditures in foreign places. I don't buy many new clothes, even in a year. I eat a lot of beans and rice, and lentils, eat a lot of bread and chilis. I save. It works. I like Portugal because it's cheap, exotic and I already know the language. I often skip extensive vacation packages or tours--just soak in the place. I stayed on the beach in the Azores--basically on the beach--for six days, for less than $2,000 for everything: flight, hotel, food, a t-shirt, taxi.

There's always a nostalgic and nice feeling when you see photos of yourself or even others of a destination that you have been to :) . Also I agree with your advice, I think most millennials like us have no regrets rushing to many countries/cities so that we get an unique experience and clear our bucket list before we start working and get too busy! We can always go back again to our favorite destinations when we're older!

I nearly fell in between 2 trains in Slovakia on a night train when I was 21. I'm 21 years old and have already lived and traveled through many countries such as Iran, India, northern Africa, large parts of Southeast Asia and now Europe since I'm studying here. Next summer I am planning a big backpacking trip that will cover all countries in continental Southeast Asia starting from Vietnam all the way to Bali without using an airplane. My biggest advice I can ever give to you is by just doing it! When I've done my first ever backpacking trip, I was 17 and quite scared and insecure about the new environments, especially when doing it in India. It does take a lot of courage and fears that you have to overcome, but the experiences and the positive outcome of your travels deeply outweigh the insecurities you've had prior to this trip. Getting yourself in new yet unusual situations in a totally foreign environment really gives you the opportunity to get to know your character much better because it gives you the unique chance to discover how you personally cope with these situations and what your limits are. Traveling is the best education you can give to yourself because at the end of the day, it does heavily influence your world view and personality too. Since most of my friends and colleagues are working in order to save money for a new car, house etc, 95% of my salary will be saved for my travel expenses because I prefer to spend my money on experiences rather than materialistic things. Traveling is a drug for me
@YukiNoYume

I just love you Mark, no other travelling adviser I enjoy more watching! And I totally agree to all you've said, I'm 26 now and have been travelling to so many great places even though I'm still an university student and my parents don't even have the money to pay for my studies. But there is always a way if you make discovering the world your top priority :)

This is such a great video. Fantastic tips and *_awesome photos_* indeed. *_20 countries in 30 days_* - I agree that if one is going to do this, do this while you're young (and naive). BUT, so many, young and old, are simply in to bucket list ticking off cities just to say *_they were there_* yet they never experience anything real in each country. Think of all the time *_wasted_* checking out of hostels/hotels, getting to train stations, waiting for trains, riding trains city to city, , finding your next hotel, waiting to check in, getting a feel for the new city/country, then doing this all over again in 24-48 hours. I know I know, people with experience have this down and perfectly time their arrivals and departures. Fine but the wasted time in actual travel is unavoidable. Every single person I know who did 7 cities in two weeks (for example) had very few experiences and little to say about their visit except the top attractions and hopefully some local eats. To some, this is all they need I know. Still I feel that even in your 20s, take a minute to get to know the city. Just an extra day would make a world of difference.

Tosh T the voice of reason and experience. I agree with you. I also think that 20 somethings seeing a massive amount of places in a short time will help them gain experience and revisit and savor those locales later. I always love your comments Tosh T. They make me come at our vids from another angle. Thanks!

+Jocelyn Wolters Trust me, I've done the 5 cities/9 days (Saturday to Sunday) road trips a few times in the U.S. and although very enjoyable at the time, I can honestly admit we missed so much. One you will like...Boca Raton, FL -> Savannah, GA -> Nags Head, NC -> Washington, DC -> Charleston, SC -> Boca. GF was looking at Georgetown for grad school so we did a loop. Don't recall a thing about Savannah even though we were there for two days. Ha!

Don't worry about travelling solo. I'm a girl too, and I went alone on a trip (well 6 weeks) for the first time when I was 19 years old. Choose a safe destination, stay at a hostel or visit some classes at a language school to meet new people and don't be scared to speak to the locals, no matter whether it's the old lady in the park or the sales person at a bakery where you buy your breakfast. It takes some courage to do the first step, but you won't regret it. It's not only a nice way to explore a new country and culture, but also to get to know yourself better.

Great video! Having travelled alone in my 20s and now I'm in my 30s, I will say to young people that if you would not consider travelling to some crazy places and doing some crazy stuff, you won't do it in your 30s... nada! Although now I'm in a relationship and I always have friends who are willing to travel with me, I still take the opportunity to travel on my own when time and budget allow. It's a great way to build my character and to learn more about myself.... and I have to keep on learning myself! I know a few people who are my age and they always say that their biggest reason for not travelling aboard even when their time allows is that they won't travel on their own. I understand where they are coming from but I believe they miss a big opportunity. Once you get older, you won't want to do crazy things! You have to get used to it when you are younger.

I think another tip to add is that if it's not possible in your life during your 20's to "travel all over the world" then it's okay too. I usually love your videos Mark but sadly I can't relate much to this one. It's easier said then done to do all this when you're in college and your free time is taken up by work just to be able to pay for college, coupled with overprotective parents who don't have the finances for family travels. I do think that domestic traveling is a great way of helping that travel bug when you don't have the time and money to spend on that huge international trip.

It really does depend how much you WANT it. I was a full time university student, I couldn't travel either. But once I graduated, and after a couple of years working the graduate job, living the normal life, in a house with bills and rent... I decided I wanted to travel. I wanted it MORE than anything but I knew I could never afford to travel in my 20s with a normal job and rent to pay. So I sold my car, furniture, everything I owned and kept only a suitcase of items to live form. I saved for over a year, found an online job that pays me to work on the internet as a teacher. I did everything in my power to make it possible. Sometimes it's about how much you want it... Then you make it happen no matter what.

+technojunkie123 domestic travel is great too and even if it's getting out and exploring your own city or county can be a great thing. In the summer we drive all over to small towns near our home (90 min or less) just to explore and it's great to see some of those towns. Some of Our best memories happened that way. Sorry if this video came off kind of bad. I didn't mean it that way.

Hey Mark. Gerät Video an totally tue. I was in Salzburg this year. Because I couldn't find a travel mate I decided to go there on my own. It was the coolest trip I've ever had. Mountain climbing and sharing a beer at the peak with other mountaineers I met there, visiting ice caves and exploring the city with a friend that lives near Salzburg at the mountainside was one of the best things that happened to me. 😊 Even sleeping on top of a mountain with an amazing view of Dachstein mountains and a gigantic view of the stars was really cheap thanks to a membership in the mountaineering club.

The one thing I'd say is to spend a week somewhere... in a rental flat or Air BnB... go and live in the community for a few days... there's nothing like buying groceries in a foreign country to make you realize you have a lot to learn.

I have made sure to do as many high adrenaline/energy things as I can in my 20's. I am halfway through my 20's and plenty more places to go to. Japan is the place I have been to that I would least want to be as a "senior". There is so many stairs all over the place that anyone with arthritis would really struggle to get around.

I did zipline, horseback, coffee tasting in Costa Rica. Went around Italy from Rome, Gizzeria, Alberobello, Tivoli, and The Vatican. London was my first International experience when my sister studied abroad for Colgate University. I do however like traveling to countries with very favorable exchange rates as a solo trip.

I've started leaving the airport to check out new cities during layovers if there's enough transfer time, so I've managed to see the Eiffel Tower in Paris [Air France] during a 5 hour layover (very risky cos it takes an hour with the RER from CDG to Champ de Mars, but I did it) and the skyscrapers of Frankfurt [Lufthansa] during a 4 hour layover (much easier cos it's less than 15 minutes on the S-Bahn) - I've also taken advantage of cheap day tickets on the buses and trains to explore many cities of Northern England near Manchester!

This is great, I'll be studying in Berlin next spring and summer! Though for number 1, as number 2 addresses, you may not have the freedom, but you will most likely also have money. It's a trade-off I guess, but you kinda need both to travel.

Great video Mark! I live in a family that loves to travel all around the world especially my mom(she drags us everywhere). The problem with that, is that you’re going to spend lots of money on traveling and not domestic needs, like maybe a decent sized house or brand new TVs. You just won’t have the prob

Excellent Video. I love travel. And you are right, now in my forties I dont have the same energy to be a backpacker but I have the money for a 3 weeks Trip every year and Re visit some of the places that I enjoyed 15 years ago. Greerings from Chile.

I was lucky in my 20s I got a career where I got given the opportunity to travel. On my off time I always made sure to try and see how the locals lived. Sure it wasn’t super exciting, but I think I got a good feel for different cultures. Talking to the people who live in a place is the best way I think! More than one way to get around the world - but just make sure you do it!

You should do a video about yourself and all the places you have been and what you do. Things like how many countries have you been to, which are your favorites, what was your first foreign country, what languages you speak, where you have lived, etc

My wife and I love to travel, but we don't go on relaxing trips. We do our research beforehand and then during the trip we go go go and try to see and do as much as possible. Sometimes I wonder if I'm overdoing it. Mark's reassurance makes me feel much better about it. But I also plan realistically and have enough time for things so that we don't feel too rushed.

6:30 Paestum!! Freaking LOVED that place!!!! Just South of Salerno. I had 2 1/2 days in S. Italy-1/2 day in Paestum, 1 in Naples, 1- Pompeii/ Herculaneum. Would've loved more time. The temples are great, but countryside is also amazing.

I can only agree with all you say Mark. Our three children have done/are doing exactly what you advise. My daughter is returning next week from a 6 month trip to S E Asia (you must not forget that region in your recommendations for a cheap holiday). My other two have done extensive travelling in the US and Europe. It is an amazing education to see how "the other half lives"....as the saying goes.

Take care of yourself and try not to get sick. If you need a break from the hostels, maybe spend a night or two in a hotel or at least a single room. I had a really bad experience with a sinus infection in my twenties traveling through Italy that maybe could have been avoided with some allergy medicine and rest. All in all, glad to be in my thirties and have enough money for those single rooms while still being able to walk 30,000+ steps a day.

My favorite one that you said is that you don't have to travel with your friends. I'm 25 and personally I would prefer being a solo traveler because I dont like to wait around for others. My thing is if I wait for others I won't go anywhere. I also plan to live abroad one day and it's a little easier to transition. I'm visiting Scotland in a couple months and it's my first international trip and I'm also solo. So I'm excited. ❤ thanks for the informative videos.
