I think a lot of people in the UK may be 2nd or 3rd generation from immigrants of many backgrounds, so we are still very much in touch with the history of our home countries, and can answer that question a bit easier than people from America. I think you're misunderstanding the American POV. When someone asks the question "where are you from?" the answer 'America' should suffice. We should not have to go into detail because America is in fact a place one can be from. Unfortunately, this question often only targets American blacks although our history is similar to blacks throughout the Americas. It's a ridiculous question when you actually think about it. Where should we trace our history to? Places like Nigeria? Nigeria has only technically been an official country for 55 years. Blacks have built culture, raised families and contributed to American society in unparalleled ways for over 400 years! We know where we are from. America.
@shakeelmirza2754
@shakeelmirza2754 4 года назад
Christopher Mitial it’s not a way to make people feel like they are unaware of the extent of their ancestry. As I said, the reason this question is more comfortably asked and answered in the UK is because the immigrants have only been here within the century, and the majority of people have direct access to that information, in comparison to black Americans. Also, the question is not exclusively targeted at black Americans; it’s usually directed at any person of colour.

It's because you're renting. Most Brits have dryers, it's just that landlords won't provide many white goods because they have to maintain them or replace when broken. That's why you get tiny fridges and cheap washers ( if they actually provide a washer - lots don't). Most people who rent in the UK buy their own washers, dryers, fridge/freezers etc...

I’m black and 27 and so most people my age would either be the first or second generation in the UK. It’s pretty rare to have elderly grandparents who were born here... They would either be born in Africa or the Caribbean. That’s why when they ask where you’re from they mean what country is your family because they would assume you’re born here (although maybe not you because it’s clear you’re from the US lol). It’s not the same here as it is in the states with regards to black people living in the US for hundreds plus years. I hope that makes sense.
@Kim-427
@Kim-427 4 года назад
Another difference is many of your elders came to London voluntarily from their homelands.Many of ours were brought by force to America for slavery purposes.So,Really its not a pleasant question to be asked or a conversation to be had.Im not saying its done in malice I just wanted to add some clarity.

There has only been a significantly large black population in the UK over the last seventy years. Black people have come here from their own nations and have a strong attachment to and identity with their own languages, culture and cuisine. Thus it is not uncommon to inquire into the origins of a black person and it is no more rude than asking the same question of a white British person whose first and second names are, for example, Italian or Greek. I am a little surprised that Brits, knowing that you were American, would ask you the same question because, if reasonably sophisticated and educated, they should know that black history in the US is very different.

Mabellent Mensah well in that case "most" British people wouldn't know their history either outside of direct Africans because us "Caribbean's" were also "imported" to the Caribbean according to colonial history, but you would never ask a Jamaican or Trini person where are they "really" from, so why would you ask an African American and expect them to be okay with that when America is all they know?
@millicentetsey7900
@millicentetsey7900 4 года назад
Skye Monique well you assumed I don’t. Most Caribbean’s are either Nigerian or Ghanian by decent because Ghanaians where the most rebellious slaves and where often the people most likely to try escape. The slave owners would then take these Ghanaians to Caribbean countries to have better control over them. I’m not saying it’s wrong to embrace the fact you were born in America but just always remember that if you ancestors were never taken without permission you would probably be in an African country right now...

No that's not true. It's due to the fact that landlords only ever do the bare minimum for tenants and if you're renting you won't get a dryer. I knew as soon as she said that there was a 90% chance she's a renter.
@mirakworld434

@Black Brit in my experience it does depend on the size of the property, as not many Kitchens can fit a dryer and washing machine. I have seen a lot of 2 and 3 bedroom flats with no dryer Space, or separate laundry room. I rented a property a long time ago and it had a dryer and washing machine, so it does depend. Quite a few are quite specific to inner London, they definitely have huge supermarkets pretty similar to Walmart a bit outside of London! Same with foxes, they are “urban foxes”! Also lots of houses have dryers, I think it’s more of a flat/apartment thing as it’s more difficult (expensive) to install the ventilation. So they don’t bother! Also we love hanging clothes to dry for some reason. US websites are blocked (by themselves!) in the EU because they don’t want to implement the GDPR rules - where they have to get consent to track user behaviour. They don’t want to implement it as they don’t get many EU readers and it’s illegal within the EU if they don’t do it, so they just block access from the EU!

Also don’t be ashamed of not knowing where you’re from, I think it’s just a default thing to ask and a lot of people don’t really think before talking to black Americans, it’s not your fault and I’m happy you’re embracing who you are, you guys have added so much to this world 💓🥰

One of the things that I was a bit taken aback by when I first moved to live in the UK was the location of the washing machines (In the particular space I had rented, I could either get a washer and a dryer or a washing machine and a dishwasher. Because I was so used to washing dishes by hand, unfortunately, and it was only me, I opted for the washer and the dryer.) So the first time I had to bring my dirty clothes into the kitchen I was a bit discombobulated. And it took me a little while to learn how not to save up clothes for a week or two before wash day...like I would do back home. I think the first time I washed clothes I washed clothes for two days straight, because the washing machine and dryers in the home were smaller than what I was used to. But in no time I got the hang of it... I learnt to wash about every 3 days and not wait! First time I ever tried Nando's I was in the UK, when I came back to the States I was bummed that I would no longer be able to eat the Nando's deliciousness . But as luck would have it I had traveled 2 hours from my location and found a Nando's there...Happy Happy Joy Joy! ! have to admit I did miss Walmart too, but I also enjoyed going to the different stores and looking for my needed / wanted items. I had a great time going into the little boutiques and large department stores... Mainly ones that are not back in the States and enjoyed those experiences. And as a bona fide Shopaholic, I liked checking out all the different shopping areas and stores! All in all with all the things that I found irritating, I can write another list of all of the things that I just loved about being in the UK! About the "where are you from" question, I'm a iot older than you and didn't realize at the that other cultures didn't know that African Americans really couldn't answer that question. The exact location of where our ancestors came from is mostly a mystery to us . As African-Americans we're a bit of this culture and a bit of that bloodline to make up who we are now. Now we're a hodgepodge of a lot of different ethnicities and cultures, but we're here and we've also added to the fabric of the World globally. The time that I lived in the UK was at a time... Of course with my luck... That they were having a heatwave! And by what I was told it was hotter then than it had been in a number of years! My rental did not have any air con, because normally it didn't get hot enough to need it. I was so hot I would go shopping at my local grocery store and think about getting naked and sitting in the frozen food section... My mind had gone loopy... LOL!! Yeah, I didn't want to start an international incident , but It was just that hot... LOL!! i do wish everyone could get the opportunity to live abroad at least once in their lives, to expand their own Horizons and outlook and to understand how others live. Maybe then we could learn how to get along more with one another!. Thanks for the Great Vlog Paige!**** I apologize for my reply being so long!!

Most people I know, have a washer/dryer. My local Tescos, has the electrical/clothing/household/toys department upstairs. Weather stations are usually in the shade, so the temperature is often hotter, than reported it's been 27-31c Most of the time here, for over a month (80-87.8f - SW London) My plants need rain! 🕊💓 Sorry about the BS! With regards to the dryers, we tend to use our radiators to dry clothes. This is helpful in the colder months when we can’t dry them outside and it kills two birds with one stone, you can warm your house and dry you clothes at the same time.

Re the dryer, I think it is about space. Most English people have their washing machine in the kitchen, and there is not enough room for two appliances. You can buy a washer/Dryer machine that's all in one, but they are expensive, and therefore landlords don't put them in retail property.

Hi paige love the channel , i think after quarantine get a showreel and look to get in presenting or the like . You have a really calm , polite , positive and friendly way about u .Just to reiterate what others have said washer/dryer combos have a reputation of shrinking or damaging clothes . So having two separate machines takes up a lot of space .Also questions have been raised about their safety records. Dryers have been known to cause fatal fires .

I think the lack of larger supermarkets may be due to where you live. I live in zone 5/6 in London, there are two Tesco extras, a regular Tesco (but a lot larger compared to smaller express Tesco’s), Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s and ASDA. Apart from Morrison’s you can find beauty products at all of them and clothing and electrical devices at Tesco extras and Asda

The thing about Nando’s is that whilst it’s in Chicago and DC, maybe a few other places, it’s not everywhere. There’s no Nando’s in New York and I hate that!!! 😆 And you can get a flat screen or a pillow/whatever in a big Sainsbury’s or ASDA not they local ones...unless they changed it up. I’ve been to a Costco but it wasn’t in London that’s for damn sure. No. The UK has one to seven days of summer...and get a VPN app for your home news! I do that to use BBC iPlayer 🙂

I've been enjoying watching some of your videos. The drier thing is probably due to the scarcity of space in the rented accomidation scene in england's citties, most flats and shared houses are either blocks, agency builds or private sector house converstions. We don't really have that shared washing machine drier room in UK blocks of flats, that I noticed was often available in north american appartment buildings most families would have a drier if space and budget allows, my mum has had one since I was a teenager. We do have lots of neighbourhood launderettes in the more urban areas though. Here in india, where I have been living for 15 years, most people can't afford luxuries like machines and do their own washing by hand (usually the woman of the house). A lot of the educated classes have maids that often do washing for those in hostals right up to private houses. Younger office workers often take their laundry to a traditional hand wash launderette (dobi). nowadays as people get more economically indipendent, consummer goods like washing machines are becoming more of a norm. It's amazing living in another culture, well done you for embracing it. I highly reccomend you live in more exoctic locations in the future, the further away from your comfort zone the better, it really is a valuable life expierence.

Hi, on the climate, the British Isles are actually a lot further North than Chicago. We have mild, wet winters because of the Gulf Stream, and mild moist Summers for the same reason. 25 degrees centigrade or higher we consider hot, over 30 degrees is a heatwave, and there may well be health warnings on the news 🤣🤣🤣

@Ginger unfortunately yeah. Us brits barely go to Costco and if we do either you own a restaurant or someone’s having a very big party 😅. Nobody goes to do regular shops there because nobody here shops for that much food in one go and it’s usually far and unlike the states, having a car here is a privilege because the roads are so small and the insurance is so expensive. Dryers are a thing here but my guess is to do with space and energy. If it’s not the foxes I hear making a ton of noises, it’s the cats fighting outside 😂 or foxes going after cats, this is from a person living in south London 😅. We do have Costco! One is in Croydon and the other is in Wembley I believe, you still need a membership to walk in there and purchase stuff, I love that place. “Summer” weather can be a hit and miss here, it’s weird, you’ll have periods when it’s really hot or mildly hot. Yesterday, I’ll consider that to that to be good weather (21c). For the websites, I would say use a VPN instead of asking for screenshots 😅. I know some people may ask the heritage question to see if you carry any cultural traditions according to how you were raised. For instance, one thing could be done different in a Ghanaian household compared to a Trinidadian household. From my view, some ask for understand and if they can relate or learn from you.
