The Bose headphones are a must for a flight of any duration! Lol. They seriously cancel out everything (engine noise, crying babies, etc.) and put you in another world without having to damage your ears by turning your music up loud.

Noice canceling headphones plus an iPod gives one the comfort of reducing noice caused fatigue, plus knowing you are not limited to whatever the airline has going. Hours and hours of a wide variety of music allows for a myriad of moods.

I don’t use the seat-back pocket. Instead, I bring a tray table cover (it’s called “airplane tray table cover”). It serves as a cover for the tray when eating. When putting the tray back up, it is a hanging organizer with multiple pockets for phone, charger, snacks, water bottle, hand sanitizer, etc. Everything is right in front of me. It is super helpful especially during a long international flight. I cannot travel without this cover.

This might be an odd thing to do…but I bring a number of clear plastic garbage can liners. I put my purse in one, then purse under the seat. Useful for visits to the airport bathroom. IF I ever had an emergency and had to use the airplane bathroom, I would cover my feet. As I heard a cabin attendant once comment, ‘that’s not water on the floor, you know’! I always, always carry a package of disinfectant wipes. I share them with my seat mates. Tray tables, arm rests, head rest areas, AROUND THE WINDOWS where you rest your head, all get wiped down, quickly, so I’m not that person holding up the passenger loading line!
@AndreasAntics

What a great idea! On our last flight the people in front of us were filthy and spilled food and drink on the floor and it ended up soaking the bottom of my bag. I heavily waterproofed it before our next flight. 🤢
@Off_the_clock_astrophysicist
I used to be one of those who looked at people who sanitzed their space funny. Since Covid, I have changed my stance on that. It's not just the chance of catching a bug that won't let me go, but it actually makes sense. Who wants to have a cold declare itself on day 3 of an exotic vacation, get better around day 10, and fly back on day 14 (or even worse, fly back while sick). I recently flew United, and they gave out sanitizing wipes. Very few people used them, but I was one of those fascetious people who wiped down everything that they would be touching during the flight. No shame. And I used the garbage bag trick on a shorter trip, when my personal item was a snow white tote. You might ask why snow white? It went with all of my summer travel outfits and was ultra light. Just a bad idea while flying.
@CO84trucker

For those who wear contact lenses, it's best to wear prescription glasses on the day of flight. The dry cabin air will get the best of your contacts and rewetting drops barely help. Also I'd rather remove my contacts before leaving for the airport as cleanliness in public facilities isn't always guaranteed.

Swat back pockets sometimes are used if a person is air sick having a couple of plastic bags. I purchased disposable teeth cleaners one time use. Don't need water. They little sponges on a stick and a minty flavor and works great. I carry herbal tea bags and crystal lite for 500ml size servings. Also Mono luggage as 750 ml bottles that filters water, great on airlines as the water tanks are rarely sanitized, I am an licensed aircraft mechanic and worked on these aircraft. Also carry a small flashlight and handy wipes for many uses.

Rather than using the non-recyclable plastic bag for single use toothpaste, try toothpaste tablets or DIY them by putting a dab of toothpaste gel on wax paper, sprinkling baking soda on top and let dry overnight. Store in a small silicone container/bag for use anytime. This is what I use for backpacking trips. Saves weight and packaging. 🌿

Suggestion: brilliant idea about the gallon bag for seat back pocket- I think I will "pre-pack" all the things I want in that seat back pocket, before the flight, this way I just grab that bag and place it and the contents, in the seat pocket. No more fiddling around my bag for the items I always use!!! I then plan to have another replacement bag, in my carry-on-bc I will toss out the original gallon bag!

I keep meaning to find a solution to the filthy seatback pocket dilemma, so great idea! I wonder if anyone makes rugged and perhaps somewhat rigid ones that you can then insert into a cheap plastic bag so it doesn't get soiled by the seat pocket, then discard the bag after getting off.

Something I just bought is a phone clip which holds the phone at eye level and is attached to the back of the seat in front of you. I always have Earplanes - special pressure modifying earplugs because I have really bad eustachian tube dysfunction and chewing gum is not generally enough (though I do that, too). It helps save me from severe ear pain on descent and accompanying hearing loss for a time after a flight. This tip was told to me by an ENT 20 years ago and I continue to follow it. My ear canals are on the smaller side, so I get the kid's size Earplanes and they help.

I've found that my most indispensable item for long flights is a sling bag which can a) store all items I need access to and b) I can shorten the straps and hook it over the tray table so it hangs right in front of me. Everything I need is access accessible and I don't need to put anything in the dirty seat pocket. I've had almost a dozen flights in the past few months (including some long hauls between the US & Europe) and this has worked great. My new favorite is the Bellroy Lite Sling which is 7L and can store my chargers, cables, airpods, tissues, personal First Aid Kit and even my iPad Mini. It's been awesome!

But for my personal bag on the plane I carry a cheap travel toothbrush and some baking soda in a tiny jar container. Baking soda is a great alternative to toothpaste & freshens your breath, too. Reading also helps me fall asleep on those longer flights, as its part of my standard bedtime routine at home.

For long flights, make sure you have noice canceling headphones. The constant drone of the engines causes more fatigue than one might imagine. Carry an extra battery, and bring your own source of music. Do not rely on your phone. I take my iPod. It has way more space than my phone, plus I don’t need to worry about being able to charge the phone as I only use it as a phone. I also take an iPad. Way bigger screen than the tiny phone.

I always travel with a large light weight wool scarf. I wrap this lightly over any area feeling chilly. Or fold up to make a small pillow for your head. Pull over your head to block light so you can sleep.

Ear plugs. I used to get migraines the day after every time I flew. I started wearing ear plugs during take-off and landing. It helps with the plugged ear from pressure changes and now I don't get migraines the next day. Also Colgate Wisps. They act as a small single-use tooth brush and have a toothpick on the end.

Need to add the USB A to C connection to my list, as I don’t have one yet. Will also add the peppermint vanilla tea as well. Instead of gum, I usually bring ginger candies in case of an upset stomach. Airport food isn’t the best, and these work well. Thanks as always, Megan!

If you decide to buy one, look for one that passes only power and not data. Never trust publicly accessible USB ports as they may have been tampered to install malware. While not as easy to tamper with on a plane, it's much easier to do at hotels and waiting areas. Fortunately, a lot of corporate cybersecurity training is now covering this attack vector.

Noise canceling headphones. I currently use Apple Airpod Max, complete with a headphone cable so I can plug it into my iPod 5th generation (reworked) or the in-flight entertainment system. Cuts engine noise, cuts out screaming children, and lets me relax with my favorite music. Oh, I also swear by Kindle e-readers. It's loaded up with books. The battery life of the iPod and Kindle make it idea for long flights. Far more than a iPhone or iPad.

@0:39 Bluetooth adapter! I used that exact one during an overseas flight this past February. It paired and worked perfectly with my Raycon ear buds. But beware; some airlines use a two prong plug and you would need an adapter (conveniently available online).

I bring a Mini Red LED Keychain Flashlight on a small carabiner to search for my "stuff and things" without disturbing my fellow passengers.. P.S. On a side note - don't save any "in-flight" food or risk being sniffed and spotted by Fido going through security screening. We recently were delayed for 45 minutes and our ham sandwich (provided by the airline) was dumped in the garbage.

I used to always take one of those 12 oz metal tumblers with me, and pack a few Earl Grey tea packets inside. Then, once in the air and the movie is starting, I would ask the flight attendant to fill up the tumbler with hot water, I would use a tea bag, put the top back on and have a nice big cup of tea to sip on for a couple hours. Don't know if they still let you bring those tumblers on board anymore.

I wear a SCOTTeVEST travel hoodie that has multiple pockets in different parts of the garment, it holds everything i need for a 14hr flight. That includes gum, iPod, small foldable NC headphones, pen, aspirin and guafinesin tablets in case i get nasal congestion. It could hold my iPad mini if I so desired. I also recommend carrying a small TSA approved tweezers if you wear earbuds with removable tips, those things can get stuck in your ears at rhe most inopportune times. Tweezers work well for plucking them out.

I use mentholated lozenges to help clear my sinuses, ear plugs for pressure adjustment - just on take off and landing makes a big difference. Always bring a pen, and a paper copy of the address of my accommodation on arrival.

Wired noise cancelling earbuds. Even if I don't want to listen to anything, it makes the flight much quieter. Reading glasses, because I'm over 50. I keep my in flight items in a small canvas zipper pouch hanging from the magazine holder with a "Heroclip", a handy variation of the common carabiner.

It has my essentials, adapter, ear plugs, favorite eye-mask, small essential oil, pills, folding brush hair & tooth, toothpaste, hand sanitizer and face mist.

I bring a battery pack that I charge from the USB port and charge my devices from that. It isolates your device from the USB port (more important in airports) and will usually charge your device much faster.
