Your videos make some Germans realize again how lucky we are to live here. We are a relatively small country and we have: Beaches, islands, forests, mountains, palaces and castles, churches, etc.

When it comes to driving in Germany comparing to driving in US there is one major difference; the way how they are educated to drive. In US you learn this with other adults or at school in some lessons. In Germany you have to go to a specific "educational company" called driving school (Fahrschule) where you're going to be teached in theoretical and fundamental principles of driving and afterwards you need to have a minimum of training driving hours divided into Autobahn, City, Landscape, night, etc. so that for difference situations you are already a bit aware of. Additionally the used cars need to have a higher standard to pass the technical inspection. That's another reason why the first year of driving is not directly comparable.

My thoughts about "beer before steer": Imho it depends on where you live. In the US, where 16 year olds need cars much more than they need them in Germany, because here in Europe they can count on public transportation and walking is much safer..... well it is obviously a pro to be allowed to drive with 16! On the other hand, here in Germany, where people drink in public, (and not with the aim to get drunk on parties but to develop a reliable way of drinking), - consuming alcohol is something each and every 16 year old German is permanently confronted with. How to consume alcohol in a reliable way is something teenagers have to be taught! So it is a pro that Germans are allowed to drink at age 16 (at least "smooth stuff" like wine and beer). And when they go over the top and feel sick with a hangover or even have to be taken to hospital it is a lesson which no kid will ever forget. Most of them (as long as their family uses alcohol in a reliable way instead of suffering from alcoholism) will not be keen on experiencing this again! So I guess what makes sense or not is strongly dependent on the environment and social life you grow up in. And as we know, there are pros and cons to EVERYTHING, nothing in the world is only good or bad. :)
@Xerlash
@Xerlash 8 месяцев назад
i agree in most parts, but i dont think 16yr olds need to take moms suv. in germany you are allowed to drive at 15, but only very weak motorized bikes (up to 45kph). at 17 youre able to get a "pre-divers license" which allows you to also drive cars, but only under the supervision of chosen adults, at 18 youre free to drive alone then. this allows teens in remote areas to get around by themselfs at a young age too, but with reduced risk of accidents. it also benefits the later driving if one expierienced road traffic in this "light" way instead of just taking off with a vehicle that can easily turn into deadly wreckingballs.
@Herzschreiber
@Herzschreiber 8 месяцев назад
@@Xerlash I never claimed that 16 year olds must take Mom's SUV! LOL, I said most of them have enough access to public transportation. And yes, you are right, there are exceptions to the rule. I know about them but they are not often used and I did not dive so deep into the topic to explain that. By the way, children of farmers may also drive agricultural machinery such as tractors to help at the farm, when they are 16.
@Xerlash
@Xerlash 8 месяцев назад
@@Herzschreiber exactly. my point was, that imho its unnececary to start driving in cars. you can get around in smaller vehicles too. wasnt a direct criticism towards your statement, which i agree with.

in a walkable city with public transit, having as a child already went through mandatory cycling lessons to get cyling licence in elementary school (which gets real practical test by real traffic police), teens have a sense for responsibility in traffic and learned basic rules. As teenagers who will always tend to do something challenging, testing borders and do forbidden stuff, its better to allow at least beer to prevent secret drinking and driving before learning how to deal with alcohol while being lets say on parties where teens could drink (even by peer pressure or to impress other teens) in secret alcohol and drive, cause accidents and death. usually teens in germany learned what alcohol is before age of 18 and before getting driver licence, get curiosity out of their system and do not have to hide it from parents. if they go lets say to a party and if they drank alcohol, like beer, they would call parents to pick up or call taxi paid by parents to avoid teens driving themselves home while drunk. There is no pressure to get a licence at 16 when public transit , walkable cities, and honesty and trust toward parents are there to pick one up. the roads are for american impression well maintained because it is paid or funded by the gas costs for trucks and cars, which is tripple expensiv than in usa. the gas prices are high because of this. public space is not just a privilege for adult males only. it should be safe for everyone in the whole society, like children, women, girls, seniors, disabled, blind. this is what european people fight for, while in USA they have tend to lock kids up at homes and not allow on streets and leave city centers for male gangs and criminal activities, which europeans dont understand. the approaches , responses and rules in USA are a failure, not solution to a problem or challenge. there is a difference in mentality.

There is tendency amongst young people to trink less and less alcohol on a regular basis. Maybe a beer or two when you go out on weekends. That’s pretty much it. The variety of soft drinks significantly grew over the last years. Drinking nonalcoholic beer has become very acceptable as well. When I was younger it happened drinking ended in vomiting and passing out. We were all too used to, that some of us made an experience like that. That changed drastically.

The thing about alcohol is that at 16 you can do less dangerous nonsense when you're drunk and they're also easier to handle. You can punch down easily a 16-year-old if he's aggressive, but it's more difficult with a 21-year-old one and at 21 they already have 5 years of drinking experience and know their limits. When I was 17, I had an accident on a moped when I was drunk. Nothing much happened and since then I have never drunk again when I drive. Imagine what happens if I had drove a car.

It's also worth mentioning that insurance premiums for teenagers/rookie drivers are close to 200%, until they're in their early twenties. If they have an accident, the premiums will either go up or stay high much longer. Even if you just add your kids to your own insurance (which is mandatory to have for each car), it's a pretty penny at first. (Not sure, but possibly even the time of how long someone has had their license may be considered.) The premiums get lowered each year to as low as 40% of the original premium as long as you drive accident-free. That's not counting minor fender benders or dents you may choose to pay for out of pocket rather than rack up the premiums again. Basically, it's "don't use the insurance, pay less over time".

We children went to the playground on our own, to school on our own and into the woods to play on our own. Adults weren't around 95% of the time. My father only gave me five rules back then if I wanted to go out as a kid: 1) Don't go with strangers and don't accept anything from strangers. 2) Be polite to older people. 3) Don't break anything 4) Don't hurt anyone (neither people nor animals). 5) Be at home when it starts to get dark. With drinking you may hurt youtselfe but with driving on the other side you may hurt people around you. So I think it is better to start with drinking, getting a really bad headache and learn what your behavior can cause and after that learn driving and taking the responsibility for others.

About the beer before steer aspect: I guess it's much less dangerous to learn how to drink/ handle alcohol responsibly at a young age than driving a car without a proper education at 16 or being allowed to own/ use guns or apply for the armed forces at 18. Many Germans do even start alcohol before they turn 16, under parental surveillance and guidance. Some will of course overdo it, but the most of us have in mind that alcohol is still a drug and is to be handled with care. We rather drink for enjoyment than for getting drunk. Btw, you can start taking driving lessons at the age of 16.5 years and get your licence when you turn 17. It's called "begleitetes Fahren mit 17" (accompanied driving at 17), which means up until your 18th birthday you must have one adult accompanying you whenever you're driving. That special adult needs to be at least 30 years old and it's required that he or she has a driver's licence for cars up to 3.5 tons maximum total weight for at least 5 years without interruption. Also, as a companion, you aren't allowed to drive with more than 0.5 per mille alcohol in your blood. It's possible to have several companions, but they all need to be registered at the driver's license office and you can't just be accompanied by some random person. Whenever you get your driver's licence in Germany, you automatically start with a "Probezeit", which means you're on trial for 2 years. During those 2 years, you aren't allowed to drive with any alcohol in your blood, so literally 0.0‰. Also, fines on speeding, driving over red etc. are higher and insurance is more expensive as you don't have much driving experience yet. Violating the law, endangering others or getting involved in car crashes might lead to a prolongation of the trial or you might lose your licence.

So he would have to represent the travel times to our neighboring countries differently! He says 1 hour to Switzerland, which is only possible if you live near Switzerland. From Berlin it can be 10 hours and to Paris 11 hours, depending on traffic, construction sites and time. The center of Germany is about 500 meters north of Niederdorla and 1,000 meters east of the former Oberdorla train station. From there to the capitals of the neighboring countries it takes an average journey time of 5 - 10 hours by car.

Children are allowed to drive at the age of 17, but only when accompanied. Driving school is much more difficult and extensive than in the USA. Since the driving license is very expensive (€3000-4000) and difficult, people try hard to drive properly. It's really stupid to lose your driver's license.

Hey, i'm a german and i can say, why kids ( today with 16 jears) are allowed to drink beer. It is a historical thing, because in the middle Ages the drinking water was dirty. The citizens got ill from it. 1556 the bavarian King let it be told that in the north of the German Empire in Einbeck there brewed People a healthy beer and its taste was like we today know it. So this bavarian king passed the law named "Das Bayrische Reinheitsgebot zum Bier brauen". at this time the beer must be brewed at this way. some brew master were going to bavaria and some different beer styles were born also light beer for the workers und for kids. this beer caused by the alcohol was safe and not so much people gets ill any more. of course gets the "Das Bayrische Reinheitsgebot zum Bier brauen" to our best known: "Das Deutsche Reinheitsgebot zum Bier brauen".

DRINKING ... RESPONSIBLY ... has to be LEARNED / EXPERIENCED ... and if you start young (with parental supervision/limiting of supply) you learn how much you can take AND if you even like the stuff. DRIVING ... RESPONSIBLY ... requires a HARSH TEST and LESSONS FROM TEACHERS ... *_The USA chooses the WORSE OPTION for both ... NO driving lessons/HARD tests and DELAYING DRINKING to a point where the "adults" will then OVERINDULGE and get addicted quickly / learn to "drink to get drunk"._*

In Germany, for a few years now, it has been possible to get a driving license at the age of 16. However, this is a provisional driving license and driving is only possible with previously registered people (accompanying person). These people must have had their car driving license for at least 5 years and may not have more than one point in the driving license register. On your 18th birthday you will receive your final driver's license, without any additional costs or requirements, if you have not committed any serious traffic violations yourself. New drivers have a 2-year probationary period, during which time the alcohol driving limit is 0.0%!

The border between Germany and Denmark is one of the best I can imagine. The region of Schleswig has a mixed population, more Danish in the north, more german in the south. After WW I there was a poll, to which country they want to belong. And Schleswig was divided. But the minority has some extra right as to vote or the own language. There are some danish MPs in the parliament of Schleswig-Holstein (like an US-state) and even 1 in the federal parlament.

Kids are safer, when their parents are with them, when they take their first sip of alcohol. This normalizes the whole thing and they will not be as tempted to drink excessively, when they grow up. It’s the same with sweets. The only kids I have seen binging on chocolate at birthday parties are those that never get sweets at home. The others don’t care. 😂 And since cars are really dangerous, better wait until the brain is more developed if possible. Fun Fact: Both teenagers and grown ups know that it’s a bad idea to put your hand into a fire. But grown ups know this instantly, while teenagers have to think about it. Thats why they can’t react that fast in dangerous situations. They take too long to recognize it as dangerous. 😳

The USA wasn't always like this. Many aspects that Americans now envy Europeans for were once reality in the USA, but only the older ones remember. For example, the freedom and independence of children in Germany. This works less well in the USA because 1. the distances are greater and therefore walking and cycling are impossible and, above all, 2. parents have safety concerns. But there were times in the United States when children could play on the streets without concerns. President Reagan in particular made reforms that made family life more difficult, indirectly: his capitalist politics have promoted 1. impoverishment of large parts of society and with it as a logical consequence: crime. This made the streets less safe so children had to play inside. 2. Due to the financial pressure of the changed reality of life, both parents soon had to work, which was not absolutely necessary before. The fact that both parents work full-time has also put a strain on family life. Divorce rates increased. At the beginning of the 20th century, public culture in the USA was not as different from Europe as it is today. However, the first major turning point that had a lasting impact on culture came soon: Prohibition.

there is a monastery in the county of Deggendorf (Landkreis Deggendorf), from which a Fathers (? in german it's called Pater, which is latin for father) was the one who founded the first benedictine monastery in the United States (Saint Vincent Archabbey is a Benedictine monastery in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in the city of Latrobe. A member of the American-Cassinese Congregation, it is the oldest Benedictine monastery in the United States and the largest in the Western Hemisphere*1). The Mother house of the Saint Vincent Archabbey is Metten Abbey (or St. Michael's Abbey at Metten (in German Abtei Metten or Kloster Metten) is a house of the Benedictine Order in Metten near Deggendorf, situated between the fringes of the Bavarian Forest and the valley of the Danube, in Bavaria in Germany*2). The Metten Abbey was built back in 756 but was officially founded in 766. I visited the festival for the 1250th year since its founding. The legend of it's founding is, that a hermit named Utto showed the King Charlemagne out of the bavarian primeval forest, when he got lost and as a thanks for showing the King the way out the King asked him what he wanted in return, Utto being a man of great faith said he wanted to built a monastery, so Charlemagne told him to throw his axe and whereever it landed that would be the place where he could built his monastery.*3 For the festival there had been a lovely play by the primary school children from the adjacent elementary school, they played out the legend of the founding of the Metten abbey. :) *1 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Vincent_Archabbey *2 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metten_Abbey *3 it was told to me by one of the Fathers (?) of the Metten Abbey (fun fact, that same one was voted as abbot last year on June 5th and was ordained abbot on September 15, 2023 [Athanasius Berggold] however it seems as tho there isn't any information on him in english so here's the german one: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athanasius_Berggold ) Yes I know, I don't have a life

Regarding drinking and driving: in the US you simply cannot move without a car AFAIK, so there is a need to drive if you need to go somewhere. In germany that is mostly not the case. Drinking alcohol (resp. beer) on the other hand is just a cultural habit to allow it at 16 here. In germany, probably europe, it is from old that beer was more readily available than drinkable water. Things have changed ever since, but bad habits die hard, as the saying goes. 😆

I live now in the Netherlands for almost 30 years, drive very often in both countries and compared I consider the Dutch highways in a much better condition than the German ones. And the speed of repairing is worlds apart in both countries. In Germany it takes forever while here in NL they almost do it overnight (a bit exaggerated but you get the point 🙂)

In Germany, there is a stringent law to protect children and minors, including rules about alcohol and smoking as well as working hours during practical job education. Parents and adults are responsible for sticking to that law to protect young people. The allowance to drink alcohol is not only based on your age but also on the type of alcohol. at the age of 16, you are allowed to drink beer, wine, and sparkling wine - which all contain only a meager amount of alcohol. To have a drink with a high level of alcohol like liquors, vodka, whiskey, and so on you need to be legally adult - that's 18 yo in Germany. Grocery stores, restaurants, bars, or any other shop have to check the age of young people before selling them alcohol by checking their ID. If you sell minors alcohol that they are not allowed to drink, you can get sued and the sanctions are heavy up to going to jail, if a minor got endangered. Vendors who repeatedly ignore the law and sell alcohol or cigarettes to unauthorized persons risk losing their business licenses.

So in Germany ther are MANY drivers license you can make. But it depends on your age and how fast you are allowed to drive. Age 15 - Mofa (little scooter) 25km/h Age 16 - Scooter 50 km/h, little Motorbike 120km/h, car power reduced and tractor i think 40 - 60 km/h Age 17 - car unlimited km/h BUT with a parent or legal guardian Age 18 - every car, unlimited km/h, Motorcycle an average of 160 km/h depends on type Age 24 - 'big' motorcycle with unlimited km/h So most of the teenagers already have a license before the age of 18 so that they already know all the rules and traffic and so on. They are already "experienced" drivers. And also in Germany you have to pass a test for every license. It depends on what license you already have if you need to pass theoretical and practical tests or just practical. For example the different motorcycles. So not that you are confused we only have one license but on the backside is a list with every vehicle you can drive and there is a little date behind it when you make your license so for example I got my bike license in 2013 and my car license in 2015. And that we can drink beer, wine and sparkling wines at 16 is just a little bonus 😂😂🙌🏼

You having a beer might kill you. You having a car might kill me. The real problem is that in the US you MUST have a car. And that basically makes every discussion useless, unless you want to talk about changing that and that would mean to undo 60+ years of building for the car and WILLING to start building for people. One step might be that there must be a store for X amount of houses, so you can bike to the store in your suburb area. Second is to have more variety in housetypes. So not just apartments or single family homes, but 2, 4 and more family homes. But all that would need a serious change in the mindset of the people. Not gonna happen.

13:07 Well alcohol is messing with your development and in europe being able to drive a car isn't tied as much to the question of independence as it is in the US. Regarding to the quoted statistic it would be interesting top know in how many car crashes germans/europeans get in their first two years of holding the license. Just because the age shifts from 16-18 (US) to 18-20 (Europe) you're not having a point. There will always be the period of taking your first moves on the roads out there. It's just two years later with usually mean: less learning ability, but better awareness of nagerous situations and responsibility. Anyways I agree with the gerneal idea: having a beer with 16 (one, or two) should be fine. And driving at the same age should be finde too. By the way: In some parts of germany it is allowed to drive in the age of 16, when your parent or another adult is together with you in the car. And you're allowed to drive mopeds and scooters in all parts of germany, after getting the license for those vehicles. The lessons you have to attend to get ready for the streets are far better in germany than in the US and there is a wriiten test and a driving axam on the road before you get the license.
@mariokrings
@mariokrings 5 месяцев назад
Ah.... anyways there is no natural connection between the questions at what age you should be able to get your license and at what age you should be allowed to have your first beer. So it could be both at 16 or botth at 21 or one at 16 and one at 18...... one things has nothing to do with the other and have to be discussed independently.
