@@swissarmyknight4306 hell yeah no matter how well you’re playing or what you’re playing sometimes that little bit of encouragement will keep you going
9. Learn to Downpick fast and consistently this hides just how long I've been playing extremely well and once you learn how to downpick *BOOM* you now know how to play the entire Metallica discography
Then the crowd at the party you had gathered around you yells: "PLAY ERUPTION!!!" So you tell them you have to go to the bathroom when you've got nothing.
Steve Tatum just distract them with an easy version of Wanted Dead or Alive or start playing Bob Marley Redemption song or Folsom Prison blues. Or some Tom Petty and they will be satisfied. :p Fuck eruption! DAMN IT TO HELL!
the King of the Hill thene song is one of my favorite go-tos to impress non-players...it's not hard, but not too easy, and tends to sound 'harder' than it actually is, and reminds me that we can noodle on the bass strings, too.
Can you do a video on how someone can start getting into the gig scene? I'm 17 now and have been playing for almost a year and I've practiced quite a bit. I'm not exactly ready for gigs and stuff, but when I turn 18, I really want to get experience out there, and I have no idea how/where to start. I don't have a band, I don't have friends that, I'm gonna be blunt, are good at any instrument, so I have no one to start with. Also about how to find and book for beginners, and maybe a checklist of things to do to get ready before a gig to make everything goes as smooth as possible. And also advice on how to actually get your name out there in order to get more gigs, or even find bands that are looking for players. Thanks
Wow I can relate! I'm 17 too and have been playing guitar since 8 and people our age in this generation rarely listen to metal or even play an instrument especially in my country(I live in Singapore and the price of guitars are ridiculously expensive) I had the chance to perform at a relative's wedding when I was 10 and then I didn't perform afterwards. I feel like my skills are washed down the drain. I hope you can form a band soon!
I love that you still do beginner lessons and stuff. I think that's really cool. I am sure so many beginners have learned a great deal from your vids. I consider myself and lower mid level guitarist and I learn stuff from all your videos no matter the skill level. Thanks for all the great videos and Happy Holidays!
My personal top 5: 1) Have at least one unusual instrument like i. e. a 12 string, a roundback, a fretless or an acoustic bass 2) Make sure there are gadgets like string packs, capos, tuners, picks and cables everywhere around you 3) Rant regularly about people who play riffs ore wanna hear them 4) Have your stuff imported from locations not even your geography teacher ever heard about 5) Change your left hand's position to upper side of the neck and back while playing
Lol I remember being 11 years old, no internet, no teachers, just watched live shows on tv with my dads old acoustic and attempting to mimic their hands. My dad was so impressed he bought me my first electric guitar, a squire bullet. Only then I learned everything taught in this video by the age of 13. And ever since, it’s been quite the ride. I would consider myself pretty good now having 14 years of playing under my belt. I love music! Nice video! This is such a great tool for beginners. If only when I was a kid this was available. Kudos brotha!! And for all the beginners, DONT GIVE UP! It takes great patience. Much love!
I have watched hundreds of guitar videos and your teaching method has literally been the most helpful and informative for me. I’m breaking new ground just because of your tutorials and the way you break things down and make them easy to understand. Thank you so much for all the work you do on this channel!
Great video. For any beginner iron maiden fans check out the main riff on the track Flash of the Blade from Powerslave. It's all on the one string D and is just hammering a pattern on open, 7,8 and 10 frets. I came across it almost by accident and was so stoked to play a riff by my favourite band.
SayWhat? I tune by a few riffs from different songs. Opening riff to Redemption song, opening rift to BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM! Opening rift to Folsom Prison blues and the other rift in Folsom Prison blues. All fun songs to play for beginners and that's how I tune my guitar.
The unforgiven is the perfect beginner guitar lesson. Teaches leads, chords, fingerstyle, solo, power chords, open string riffs, bending, pull off, hammer on, pentatonic, triads. Everything is in there.
Thanks for this lesson! I have a hard time following the rapid pace that many instructional tend to follow, and your format is easy to follow. I've suggested your videos to most of my students as they are clear, concise, and easy to follow. My many thanks for your contributions!
I am amazed @ how you teach! U know the guitar & not just the instrument...u get ppl too. Thats so obvious. I have watched u for such a long time...but it seems as if anytime I have a question about s/t or if I am working on a riff & have an issue w/ it, you will put up a video that answers it WHILE playing the very riff that I am currently working on. That is too crazy! TOO CRAZY! It has happened multiple times throughout the last year or two. But anyways, HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Take care & thank u so much for doing this video!!! I love it!
its wild how i remember all this when I started (90s like you, i relate so hard to your BACK IN MY DAY videos lol). so now im just realizing that these are things all self taught guitarists figured out. these kept us playing and i bet a lot of us built how we play guitar around these. i think its great you use these with students. im sure its kept a lot of kids interested in continuing with guitar. being able to sound good when you're just starting is the best motivation.
Fantastic. This is exactly the ticket for entertaining others and a little self motivation! Would be great if you could list some names from popular rock , and blues links that are easy so we can look them up and learn them. Not too many, a couple hundred would be fine. 😄😄😄
Thank you for this. I’ve saved this video. Learning Sweet Child of Mine. Teacher insists I learn with bends. Getting better at it. Love Martin’s, love the tone. What solid mahogany Martin is that?
"Make sure you have some form of Smoke on the Water to go at all times". Yes, because it's so essential. Hardly anyone knows the song beyond that riff.
Sam Potter obnoxious comments for people not making their own videos is also essential. It helps you feel validated in life when in truth your day was wasted and your life is wasted. Always somebody's a critic!
I love the dark color of your SG. I have owned 5 different SG’s but haven’t fallen in love with any of them. I’m a Les Paul guy but I love the looks of SG’s and Strats.
Great vid dude. I would class myself as intermediate level and have still learned a good few things from this lesson. When I get the "play something" I almost always go with sweet child o mine as I learned the whole intro very early on. Keep up the good work. Perhaps if you do a similar vid in the future baybe add a couple of the simple Black Sabbath rifs as they can sound very decent for a beginner?
It is beyond true. People will say, "play something!" I will run through something fun but easy like Rock n Roll or Ain't Talkin' Bout Love and the second I stop..."do you know Smoke on the Water?" Every...single...time. :D
One of my favourite things to use a capo for is playing the day that never comes with a capo on the second fret. It doesn't really help the distorted guitar riffs but the clean riffs sound insanely good imo
The anchor chords are everywhere. Even Sammy Hagar’s Where Eagles Fly is the G, C, and D shapes. He also moves the Dsus up and down the neck a few frets to play the bridge. He just moves his pinky up and down a couple of frets during that bridge, too. I think 1/3 - 1/2 of More Than Words uses those, as well.
Bro thats crazy! I've been doing all of these techniques you've just mentioned! My two first theme songs I played was Terminator and the Godfather. When I learned Am I Evil by Metallica I moved power chords around with the same palm muting. It has made me better and I've learned alot just messing around.
#9 The right tone/gain level for the piece you are playing...this is HUGE. You can't play Eruption with a clean tone and you can't play Stairway with a dirty tone. Set yourself up with at least 3 core tones...clean, rhythm, and lead. #10 Use delay for lead stuff, especially if you are newer. Don't swamp it out, give it some girth and wings though to fill in the gaps. And when Christmas is over and everyone goes home, turn the delay down so you don't cheat yourself by filling in the gaps. Work on your technique fairly dry, so when you add the delay again, it sounds like it should.
Lol you are going to need a clean and a dirty tone to play the entirety of stairway to Heaven. Like a lot of zeppelin songs they start out as acoustic and transition to dirty electric. The contrast btw the two is very effective. If you can’t switch you will be limited. You need an overdrive pedal or a 2 channel amp you can switch the gain on and off easily.
When I first starting teaching myself how to tap after watching videos, which I guess isnt really teaching yourself, I thought it sounded like shit, but it sounded a lot like that, just not as fast. I only learned smoke on the water and Randys opening riff to crazy train. I wasnt quit able to master them before I quit playing. But now I wanna start back up and try again. Rocksmith is a Godsend.
*#9: Try different guitar tunings.* Especially open tunings where you can have a nice pretty chord by simply strumming all strings open. F-A-C-G-C-E, D-A-D-G-A-D and E-A-C#-G#-B-E come to mind. Strum open and then find a fret you can do a simple bar across all strings on and get a nice chord, then find some easy chord handshapes.
For the love of God is my favorite! I absolutely love Steve! He has been so cool to me over the years! I can’t say enough of how nice and genuine he is.
I remember once a guy brought his new guitar to work to show it off. At the time I had been learning guitar, I couldn't play much but I had been practicing playing Led Zep's, black dog none stop for about 3 months solid. Well the reaction I got when I picked up the guitar and ripped it off was something I'll never forget....lol!😂
Always thought Steve Via plays" for the love of God" just like that on the first run through, after that he then embelishes. Haven't heard it for a good while so I might be wrong.
This is cool. I want people to think I’m a lot better than I really am because right now most think I’m a lot worse than I really am. I keep telling people I’m a much better guitar player than I sound. If people only didn’t focus on the sound so much. 🤣
Anything with barre chords, I played stone temple pilots interstate love song on my cousins acoustic and they couldn’t believe I had only been playing for a year and a half.
More cool and easy guitar tricks. 1) lift a finger in an open chord. sometimes two. you just made a new chord, and it probably sounds cool. Or add another finger. Many songs have you do just that. (Breakfast at tiffanys, anyone?) It's like a meme. insert chord here, but insert string here is open. Many of them sound darn cool. 2) use the all 6 string open chord in between chord changes. Can't change fast enough? just change a little earlier and strum the open strings. Works great on an acoustic guitar, and it sounds really big. Greenback Dollar is great for this, it's a song you are supposed to do that with. 3) The Tremolo strum. This is where you rake all four fingers down across the strings, doing one strum with each finger, one right after the other, pinky first, pointer last. It sounds like you are strumming super fast, but it's actually very slow and easy. You know that flamenco song everyone has heard? that starts on the 1st string with E F G F E? (e-major chord). Do that strum when strumming the chords chords. Got a delay pedal? Instant WALL of sound right there. 4) move that e major three finger shape around. move it down, it's now an a minor. move it up and to the right, add in first fret second string with your pointer, and you've got a c. Oh look, that's three of the chords from house of the rising sun. move it up one and don't strum 3 2 or 1? you've got a B. You can change from c to a minor and back, and it sounds cool. you can use tip 2 along with this, and you are playing something very simple and people will swear they've heard it before. try it in other spots near the nut. They won't all work, but give it a try.
Haha, what a cool vid on how to sound better than you are! And doing stuff like this, and getting a fun reaction from friends and family can lead to much deeper learning and fun! Could be the start of something wonderful!!!
I started with bending a half step and full step I used the guitar tuner and I found that it is not that hard. I buzzed through all the soloing technics but I have had a hell of a time to play in time say like listening for say in 4/4 timing the kick drum and the snare also changing chords. I feel way behind the 8 ball it was my fault but I am with a great teacher.
There's much more to bending than just finding half and full steps. For instance: pre-bends, quarter-bends, bending while playing other strings, and all of these with vibrato. I could go on... anyhow, It's an art, not just a technique :)
If you want to sound better, learn some chords beyond power chords, like sus chords for example. Also you can arpeggiate chords as well. Stuff like this is easy to learn and it makes people think you've moved beyond playing 2 note power chords. Also, learn how to stay in on beat and in rhythm when playing chords. These are simple but effective ways to sound better.
I’m 16 and I love clapton. I am from india and I don’t like music from nowadays. I love 60’, 70’ , and 80’.... and also music from before 50’s.... I like classical too.... I think I am a old minded teen who is struck in the past.....
