Attention beginners; everything you need to know (to improvise)(ehh, chords and things but wtf) is right here! I'm 66 years old and already knew all of this but: This is the "singularly" best guitar lesson I have ever seen! It has taken me a lifetime to figure all this out on my own. If you're a beginner, commit all this to memory so that you don't have to think about it; just do it. Wow! The KEY to improvising is right here; look no further. If this doesn't DO IT for you you'll never GET IT. You have seen THE LIGHT! Rock on!

Seriously, I learned more in the first 6 minutes of this video than I had practically understood about scales from all other presentations I've seen. Thank you!!!

I don't think I've ever seen these concepts described in such a demystifying and practical manner before. Just the right level of theory. Possibly could be a very empowering lesson for beginner/intermediate players.

I have been playing guitar for decades, literally, and stumbling around like a blind man when it comes to creating a solo. I'm like the guy that types with one finger of each hand knowing he should learn some keyboard skills. Yes I could eventually come up with some cools stuff but I had no way of knowing how I got there...it was totally trial with much error and then struggling to remember what it was I found with no way to apply it to other songs...each time it was start from scratch all over again. I knew I needed to learn some theory but it just never worked for me. A couple days ago I watched this video and now I can't avoid using the things I learned in this lesson! It is remarkable because I feel like I have a cheat code to exploring and creating melody!! Only, unlike getting a cheat code in a video game which invariably ruins the game for me, this new knowledge you have given me has done the opposite for me with regards to music....I am now unbroken for the first time!! Armed with this new knowledge this morning I found myself taking that third pattern and transposing it to start on the A string, 5th fret, because I was going to play over something in D that was starting there and didn't want to start way up at the tenth fret. So I figured 'D is D...thats the root so learn damn it!' So I found it works just fine and that's when it all seemed to be so clear for a change. I now have a reference for anything I do or hear...find the root and I'm off and running.....this is SO FUN! So thank you and well done Mr. Chapman! I am eternally grateful for your spirit and enthusiasm that drives you to offer up such a resource that opened up this path for me that I so wanted to explore for so long. I hope you get all from music that you seek and you continue to help pioneer the musical territories of the internet because you earn it. Thanks!

I’ve played guitar for 11 years without any lessons. I’ve always played by ear and with what felt comfortable. Having the theory explained so carefully and easily by Rob is a massive help. Everything seems so much simpler now

Initially I thought a friend of mine had been replaced by alien pod-people 🥜. Instead, I learned he had been studying your video. He's suddenly playing scales, picking out melodies from recordings, attempting to bend notes. And then he played something more sophisticated sounding ... he said it was a "Dorian" scale. Pod person 👽! My point... this video helped to unlock a whole new musical dynamic for a self-described strummer. For years, I've offered to help with scales, visualization and improvising. After studying your video, he finally told me he had been too "embarrassed"(???) to ask for help. He always thought he would have figured it out on his own (by now). He honestly believed you had to be "gifted" in some way to learn this stuff. Nothing ever clicked for him. Long story short. You've either demystified some key concepts for lots of folks here or you're the alien pod-people overlord. Thanks either way! My friend is turning 70 this year. Life's too short to let embarrassment get in the way of your goals and it's never too late to learn something new. So now he's all energized about music theory and more annoying.... "How do you know it's a relative minor? It's always asking for money."

I've been playing for 25 years and I mostly use the blues or pentatonic scale. This video has opened up and new exciting world and helped me add new scales other than pentatonic. I've had people try to explain these and it would just not make as much sense to me as the way you explained it. Great video and teaching style!

Holy Shit Rob, wtf. I've been stumbling about for the last 30 years using the Pentatonic and bits of the Dorian not knowing what I was doing or how to really use it (didn't even know it was called the Dorian). This has been the single best guitar lesson I have ever seen. Shit dude, it just makes sense now. My mind is blown, I'm feeling a little dizzy and light headed thinking about the potential it has opened up for me. Thank you for posting such a simple and well explained video man.

I’ve Been trying to “learn” songs on RU-vid for over two years. I kinda reached a place where I didn’t know where to go. I feel like my eyes have been opened after watching this video and a couple others today. Now I can learn the scales people used to make songs!

That's exactly how I started, after my dad showed me the minor pentatonic scale 27 years ago. Just experiment with those notes, bend them etc. But the most important thing to me and the key to improvising is learning licks. Not really to play them but also to have something you can go back to, when you're out of ideas but mainly to learn new ways going from that string to that string, improving your ability of your fingers and sooner or later the licks will blend into your improvisation from alone. Nobody can reinvent the wheel and everybody is "stealing" licks, especially in the blues but when you're better you will automatically invent your own style. When you're done with that it's time to move on to the caged system, arpeggios and different scales but that's a much higher level. Always challenge yourself tho and don't play around with the same 5 notes. You won't learn anything new after some time. But that's important. Have fun :)
