I'm almost disappointed that Germany now allows Hitler to be shown in games, because this would be the most hilarious example of complying with censorship ever. It clearly says, "We didn't want to do this, this is stupid, but moral guardians, amirite?"

I think I like censored Hitler in the PSP remake of Persona 2: Innocent Sin better than uncensored Hitler in PS1 because he looks like a real chad with those slick pitch-black aviator sunglasses.
From another perspective, you are risking to make a man, who is responsible for the deaths of millions, a harmless popcultural figure. This man does not deserve to be integrated into pop culture, not more than he unfortunately already is. It has nothing to do with fearing this guys agenda or anything he has to say, it's more about respecting all of his victims by remembering him as the terrible person he really was. In real life, not just as some psychopath boss in a videogame.
@@fredstolperman2785 Have you heard his speeches? He advocates for his people and a free Germany. Free from the oppression of the French and the attacks from the communists. In an alternate reality where we ignored the globalists and allied with Germany instead of the Soviet Union, we'd be ignoring the millions killed by Hitler and "never forgetting" the hundreds of millions killed by the communist regime. As it is now, we conveniently forget the allied holocaust and focus tightly on what the Germans "did" or at least what we history writers _say_ they did.

You know I find it more offensive that they're censoring him, than him actually existing in video games, because it's basically them telling us we're too weak to actually understand what he's done. It's infantilization... It's more disgusting censorship for no good reason.

It is a mix of a legal thing and publishers afraid of loosing money. There was a court ruling in Germany for Wolf3d, since then no publisher or developer fought it and tried again, until recently. Now it is not a problem anymore and symbols, hitler ect can stay in games.
The German version does that because of the denazification act. Which was put into place by the League of Nations to Germany after WWII. So in other words, they can’t depict or mention hitler or the nazi regime because other more powerful countries are telling them not to.

Recently a publisher fought to publish a game here with Symbols and now it is not a problem anymore. It is more like publishers were afraid loosing money in the German market. Similar when they censored violence to be on the safe side and uncut Versions did not get banned, despite being graphic.

I was actually shocked about the censorship of the wolfenstein game in german,they usually talk a lot about him and teach everything he did wrong,speak openly about it,so i wondered always why they censored him in a video game
It's amazing how Hitler even dead for long time still can make some effect in new Media like videogames, but I think is because in Germany they don't wanna forget him or something. More censored him, more remember him.
The weird thing is though, Sven though Hitler is basically forbidden in games, there is literally a German comedy movie named "Er ist wieder da" (translated: "He is back") which does depict Hitler as a hero within the modern age (by timetravelling instead of committing suicide) for some stupidass reason. Our laws make no sense whatsoever.
A lot of it has to do with the legal status of video games over time. I've said this before - and really, I should make a pasta for it - but, to sum it up, initially (from the 1970's to about the mid-2000's) video games were generally classified as "toys" in some way, shape, or form, in most countries. When Video Game censorship began with the pearl-clutching over the blood in Mortal Kombat, they were still classified as a "toy." Especially in places like Germany. Under German law, at the time - and keep in mind it's still mostly the same - ANY depiction of Hitler or the Nazi party outside of a purely historical educational sense, and in some cases, an artistic sense, was outlawed. Since games were "toys" and not "art" they could, and did, demand any reference to Hitler or Nazi's be removed from any video game. Now, however, in many places, video games are classified as "art" in some form. This is part of the reason why realistic firearms are obscured in some way, especially in games like Resident Evil, which used to be very accurate with names and depictions - the actual firearm companies didn't want their products associated with video games, lest they get bad press, and since the designs are copyrighted, they can go after the games manufacturers for depicting them without paying royalty. A couple of companies have flagrantly disregarded this, but in a general sense, this is still done in some way.

In Germany, nazi stuff is allowed only in works of history and art, but video games are not recognized as art. At least until recently. As the new Wolfenstein shows, this seems to change.
I think the law (at lest currently) actually says that ANY media can have Nazi stuff, ONLY IF it depicts Nazis in a negative way (such as history books about the real Nazi era in Germany, or video games where you fight AGAINST Nazis). On the other hand, any media that depicts Nazis in a positive way is banned in Germany. I don't think the law makes a distinction between different TYPES of media (books, movies, photos, video games, etc).
Wow, we have could never recongnized him in the Persona 2 remake ! Giving him sunglasses and his title in the Nazi military, it was impossible to recognize him ! (This was sarcasm in case you didn't understand :P)
It makes sense that they take him out in the German version of the games but in the English version in western countries, kind of taking him out a little bit on the safe side too much.
I think there was one WW2 game (it was an FPS, but I forget what it was called) that was released in Germany, and it kept the Swastikas, because the game company realized that the game was fighting AGAINST the Nazis, not glorifying them, and this also was recognized by the German ratings board, so the game was allowed. At least in 1-player mode it had Swastikas, that is. In multiplayer mode, the Swastikas were replaced with a different symbol, so that when a player chose a team to play on, they could not literally play a Nazis, and in-game graphics in multiplayer mode (like the symbol on banners on buildings) were also changed to match the new symbol representing the new "bad guys" team you could select. So just different textures were loaded for the same 3D objects, depending on whether you were playing in 1-player or multiplayer mode. This was only in the German version though, if I remember correctly. In all other versions, the Swastika symbol was used in both 1-player and multiplayer modes. I could be remembering incorrectly though.
I think Germany has relaxed some of these policies, allowing the mention or depiction of Hitler and Nazis, as long it's done in a way that depicts the as villains.

Everybody talks about how hitler was the worst man on earth and how he should almost always be censored. But no one takes into the account that Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong murdered nearly 3-4 times more than hitler. (I can't give exact numbers, but I do know they range in the tens to hundreds of millions unlike hitler who only murdered over 16 million) I'm not saying I support hitler, I'm saying if to house going to censor someone, censor the ones who did worse or don't censor them at all.
as a german myself, I feel offended by the removals. YES, Hitler was a bad person, a Monster that should not be hailed at or anything. But the censorship here is incredibly ridiculous. There are games where you fight other dictators or politicians from real life or being based on them, with some of them being no less of a monster than Hitler is, BUT that is fine? Yet when you go on to fight Hitler it is not? I am glad that those times are seemingly over, same with the censorship of graphical violence. I guess anyone who follows this channel knows how ridiculous some of the censorship in germany was.
This is hilarious. With all these "changes", people might start to think Hitler was just a face with a mustache and a hat. It's not like his ACTIONS were bad or anything, NO, it's just how he dressed.
