I have the twin to that one. I got it gave to me several years ago. An old guy had it that I worked for in the summer back in my school days. Just sat in a building with 3.4 miles. Yes, less than 4 miles on it. I got it when he passed away. It has a little over 300 miles on it now.
Thank's for that mate just bought a 1987 xt with carb in pieces been sitting for a few years like that been on line all day ordering bits for it you sorted a few things in my mind while i watched that vid thanks again
Thanks for watching! One thing I missed in this video is the idle air adjustment valve. On my carb it was under a brass plug and I missed it the first go around.
hi there, pretty clean bike, The plastic frame for the filter goes inside the foam sandwich for easy removal and cleaning. You can't have the foam too thick either or else it will run rich due to less air flow. Good luck with it anyway
Cool Project !!!!! I bought same 250 XT in red 1980 yesterday, and I'm very happy to discover this video thanks' a lot to share it. I'm from Canada in Quebec province. I hope we'll exchange our experiences in this restoration. Have fun !
Yes definitely it is a project to put everything in order! But it's worth it, it's super nice to drive and when it is in order and we do the maintenance regularly, it's a charm to use !!!! I also have a 500 XT from 1976 full original that comes from Abilene in Kansas since September 2016, and that I put the closest to the factory model and that is already not in order.Have Fun !
I found a 1980 XT 250 in a guys barn when I was buying a shop vac from him. Talked him into selling it since I had to do what was done in this video. I'm having trouble with my carb running lean, where do you set the pilot jet when reassembling?
How did you set the pilot jet when you put it back together? Mine doesn't seem to be getting enough fuel, possibly going to take the petcock apart next and hope I don't have to rebuild the engine!
Thanks for the video! Trying to find more info on these bikes do you know where to find more info / internet threads about them? I'm trying to find a replacement throttle tube and cables and hoping to interchange parts from a 1984 model but can't seem to find info if they are interchangeable or not.
Anyone having carb problems on an early 80s xt 250? Here is a real solution, fit a genuine Mikuni Vm 32 from OEM cycles Tennesse,E bay, £70 or $60 dollars ish.Even when cleaned and set up, the original pumper, never started good in the Winter,or in Hot conditions.its famously fickle. The VM 32 needs a simple cable change on the carb end,and bolts straight on using 2mm gasket paper,a bigger hole made in the original air box for a ramair pod filter 58mm,and hey it evens starts first kick, runs better than ever. The cable coming out of the cab is quite close to the monoshock but clears it just.I saw sombody do this to a sr250which is a road/ twinshock version of the same engine, ive owned my xt for 3Oyears and its so much easier to live with now.nb the jets in the carb from oem cycles, never needed changing, works great out of the box.
Would you have the exact reference of the carburetor you suggest by any chance? Just got a xt250 from 1981 and the carburetor is missing. Also, why 32mm. Isn’t the original one 28mm? Does this Mikuni carb comes with a fuel accelerator pump? Thanks!
I have an 82 XT250 and the air/fuel mixture screw was snapped off in the carb, so I bought and installed a VM32-33 with a pod filter and I cant get it to run right. It stumbles and cuts out when I blip the throttle. It doesnt seem to matter what size jets I try or how I set the needle. I'm assuming that I need a pumper carb since the original has an accelerator pump. I'm now considering trying a TM32. I would love any other suggestions if anyone has experience with this.
If you are wanting to soak it, diesel or kerosene work well. To blast out the jets, any carb cleaner spray will work. Just don't get the spray on any rubber you want to save.
Hey if you pause the video at 1:35 right behind that compression release lever thing on top the bottom left of the engine. U see that thick hose going up and to the other side? I was gonna ask what is that hose and where is it going to? I just bought me a 81 xt250 and the guy modified the bike a lot. Well, there's literally a really small air cleaner stuck on the nub instead of a hose. I've been looking everywhere and can't figure out what that hose is and where it leads to/connects to. Please help!!
Not completely sure what hose you are talking about, but there are three. One off the bottom is just an overflow drain. The one off the top is just a vent. ( usually this is just a long hose that runs down in front of the back tire. This is so if the bike tips over, fuel will run out there) The third is the fuel line coming from the fuel tank.
ok thanks. guy I got this one off of said he thought the head gasket was blown but I don't think so. doesn't have any wet marks or leaky weepy spots. everything looks dry and dusty but I did find that one carb bolt was stripped in the hole so I think it was sucking air.....I hope
the carb in this one was wrapped in plastic in a bucket. looks brand new. just have to fix the stripped hole in the block. I really have no idea what I'm doing...just muddling through and hoping for the best. thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it
I fixed the stripped carb mounting hole by using a trick I saw on RU-vid. I inserted strands of copper wire then tightened down the Allen bolt. worked like a charm
i made mine from another rack just used it as abasis to start with welded some more tubing on to make fit then got it powder coated .just get some tubing of an old steel chair or something chop and make it up as you go along if you cant weld get a mate to weld it together for you .Ant from wales UK
I do have another video I need to get up about something else I found out in the carb. I still have it, life just got busy and I've been riding it instead of working on it 😝
@@J20Jeepster ha, everything. Thanks to your video I was able to clean the carb, but I got over excited and took off the engine too and tried cleaning it. Now I have to figure out how to put it all together (its my first time working on a bike and I have no clue what I'm doing haha) plus getting rust out of the gas tank. Let me know if you ever pass through southern Utah and I'll take you out to dinner for some help 😂😂
