Welcome back to the Complete Teardown of this 1983 Jeep Wagoneer SJ or FSJ. We are tearing this thing down to the body and frame. In this episode of ripping this classic Jeep apart we will be fully removing the Rear Axle, Driveshaft, Shocks, and some other miscellaneous items along the way.
I did have a couple of problems getting this thing out, but nothing major. The parking brake cables were not worth trying to save so I took the shortcut on it and just cut them free to save some time, also hacked away the fuel lines, and a few other things that were in the way. Also had a few of the U-bolts that were problematic as well, they took a little man power and some loose juice but eventually got them off.
Sometimes it is a little heart breaking to tear down these old classic Jeeps, but I think it may have been time for this thing to become a part donor so that others who are doing a full restoration to all original stock, or repairs so they can keep going down the road.
So, let's talk specs on this old beauty. This model came out towards the end of AMC and features the 360 cubic inch, 5.9L paired with a TF 727, front Dana 44 Front Axle with a driver side drop with 2.72 gear ratio, and an AMC 20 Rear Axle. four-wheel drive and automatic hubs. Cloth interior with power windows, locks, side manual remote driver and passenger mirrors.
Instead of one long video, I have broken it down into smaller bite sized how to videos by sections, part, or general area and system.
I do have some back history for this "Rockhound Wagoneer". The day after we purchased it a previous owner just happened to stop in the store. He was owner number two of three, not counting us. He knew the first owner and worked for him. He owned a couple of mines here in Colorado and he would use this to drive out to his claims and most likely haul a bunch of it back judging by how many I have found in this thing. Then he gave it to owner number two after it stopped running. He then let it sit for about 10 or 11 years then sold it to owner number three who got it running but not driving, then gave up and it ended up with us at FN Jeep where we will strip it down for parts and recycle what is no good.
