Jason - my man. I can't tell you how much joy these videos bring. I don't have the skills to do what you do, but get plenty of inspiration from your JK build. So many other channels are just people buying new Jeeps for 70K every 6 months and doing the same mods over and over. This is what an actual Jeep enthusiast channel should be. Taking a 9 year old Rubicon and making it better every year. Congrats man. You rock.

Awesome stuff Jason! You've inspired me to start my RU-vid channel. I've been a sub for a few years on my other profile. Your editing and camera angles are top notch. The b roll is great, you don't selfie mansplain like other channels, and the quality of the audio and video look professional. Now that I'm doing my own, I get how hard it can be and gotta show appreciation for the hard work and time you've put in. For now, I get to embrace the suck until my skills get better.

Jason, you always bring outstanding content! I’ve looked at doing one tons under our ‘13 JKU (she looks a lot like yours - 6 speed manual, triple black, but not a Rubicon), but it’s a bunch of fabrication if I want to use Super Duty axles that I’m not really skilled in; or a BUNCH of money to do UD60s. Not really feasible right now, and I realistically plan to wheel a lot like you do - trying to NOT tear our Jeep up. I’m going to give the Fusion website a look and see if this axle is the right one for us. Thanks again for the great content - you’re a great guy and I hope to meet you one day. You give me a lot of inspiration to get out in the garage and “do it,” which I honestly need. I was diagnosed with MS a few years ago, so my life has gotten a little turned upside down, coming to grips with this disease. You presenting this kind of technical content and the “you can do it too,” vibe you present it with really inspires me. Thanks brother, I really appreciate you!! P.S. Please give Pinto an ear scratch for me!!

Scratches for Pinto from you and cheers!!!

Anytime I do some big change to my Jeep, I tell my wife "Going for a test drive, if I am not back in 20 mins, something has gone terribly wrong and you need to come look for me". That new track bar mount lines up really well with the drag link mount, which is exactly what you want. This axle looks to be very similar in strength to the dynatrac. Which means its a huge upgrade over stock or the UD housing.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
HA! Glad I'm not the only one with that contingency plan...😂 Yeah at this top level axle... they are pretty close in strength... it was the little things like track bar mount and the C's are a bit larger but the prorock does have that radical differential housing...

I have the UD44 front in mine. It has held up fine but I couldn't get the caster I wanted without driveline vibrations. I had the inner C's rotated and the axle trussed. I had the Artec track arm bracket added as well along with PSC hydro assist. It drives beautifully now but even with a light foot, I keep bending my aftermarket rear Carbon Offroad shafts and they will not warranty them. I am making the switch to the Fusion 60/14b combo. Solid axles and the customer service from Dan is exceptional. Can't say the same about Carbon Offroad.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
Yeah, it sounds like you did everything right to make that work for sure. Sorry to hear about your frustrations and hope you have smooth sailing with the Fusion stuff like me. They have an unlimited warranty on their chromoly axle shafts... I would've gone that way but had these RCV already and thought to put them to use. Dan rocks.
@apexpredator_jku

Beautiful D44 & I won't debate that it is the pinnacle of standard crate 44s but if we're talking, "pushing the limits" before bumping it up to tons... Fusion's 60/44 Hybrid is where it's at. 60 strength in a 44 package. I've had the pleasure of seeing it up close and that thing is stout. 60 lockers & gears, 35 spline, 3.5 OD, 7/16 wall and the cost between the 2 is negligible. You can comfortably run 40s without having to crawl on eggshells. It is heavier but the trade off is totally worth it. It might be excessive for most applications but it's future proof if ever you want to turn it up a notch.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
All solid points and I would agree. I was shocked at the close cost but I'm still happy with the 44 differential housing offering me a bit more room for up travel without having to make accommodations on the skid plates and such. But there is no denying that great term you use of "future proofing" that Hybrid is a brilliant product for that.

The balljoint delete system by American iron off-road is the best choice for balljoints. Never heard of the ones your running personally. Hopefully they work out well for you though. But you’ve got lots of money on your hands to be switching axles that frequently lol I’ve got the UD44 and haven’t had any issues. But I also do have 3.5” of lift. So maybe your 4.5” makes a bigger difference than I would have thought. If I do decide to go bigger on things myself then fusion has always been my choice. The customization is insane and they’re a great company with great people. Good choice.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
Yes on most of what you say here. After A TON of research... ball joints are better for me and these are really unique and high quality units with rebuild functionality. Not even the ball joint deletes use the load sharing upper design... makes so much more sense to me to maximize the strength of the C's and the steering feel is amazing. Yes, that UD44 at 3.5" of lift is absolutely perfect... I recommend setting your caster a bit more towards the 5-7 range for the best feel but only do that if you have an aftermarket driveshaft.

Nice video. Points to note though, these require a top-mounted draglink with the Reid knuckles. Also performance 2.5 shocks wont fit without a relocation brackets and since this axel is an older gen youll need to fabricate your own, i had to modify a pair of metalcloak brackets to get the job done. The cabling for the elocker was also not compatible with my 2016 Rubicon. Overall this axel is a nice upgrade and Fusion support is great, but watch out for the gotchas that this video does not cover.

I don't know if you will reply as it's been a while since this video. Are there RCV performance axle shafts? What are rhose knuckles you keep recommending? REID? Question also, you haven't gone to ball joint deletes? I aak bc along with significant input from my life long Jeep Enthusiast Mechanic, i am accumulating my long Overland/Offroad (both) mod list. I just found your channel and love the detail you go into when doing your oru own installs. Watched your PSC steering kit install. Loved it. I am going to that kit and long arm Metal Cloak etc, all many of the Mods i see on your videos. I have a 21 JLUR. We, my mechanic shop owner/mechanic and I, haven't talked about axle change but instead changing to RCV axle shafts Now you have me thinking about upgrading the axle itself. Love your Metal Cloak aluminum fender flares. I thought i kiked GenRights better shopping and looking online but seeing your on ypur rig, maybe i was wrong. Haha I'm definitely getting rid of my huge factory fenser flares. Love your videos. ✌️
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 5 месяцев назад
Howdy and welcome! There's a lot to unpack here but I'll do my best... PSC steering kit is amazing, still highly recommend. Reid knuckles are just an industry standard quality part for peace of mind. As for axle shafts... RCV is really good but the Fusion 4340 chromoly axle shaft upgrade is actually stronger and much cheaper (just doesn't have the unique look of the RCV orange boot). I like the strength of the Fusion D44 axle housing in critical areas like the tubes and the inner C's ( I show that comparison in this video). As for ball joint deletes... they are fine if you are a hard core off roader and offer that durability. I like the steering feel of a load sharing ball joint much better. That's all, personal preference. I'm more of a weekend warrior and want my Jeep to feel as good as possible for the long road trips and city driving. And as far as any product from MetalCloak goes... you will be happy to have interacted with them and be thrilled with whatever it is you've ordered. I still am, 9 years into owning my Jeep with multiple products still on my Jeep!

The only gain in strength is the housing,and brackets,and that is marginal over the UD44. Unless you opted for the 35 spline ARB locker. The UD44 uses a 32 Spline Rubicon E locker vs the Fusion uses a 30 Spline E locker. Ball joints are an easy fix. Both have Pro/Con Great Video!
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
Thanks for the input. I believe the axle tube strength increase is more than marginal... it's the same tubes and brackets as the D60. For what I do, the center section should be strong enough... I hope... 😂
@denali2m4
@denali2m4 2 года назад
JK Rubicon is 30 spline inners on the front, not 32. The JL/JT is 32. The Eaton 4 pinion e-locker is also far superior to the OE Rubicon e-locker. Housing strength is a significant upgrade vs. the UD44. UD44 is “marginally” better than the stock axle. 35 spline isn’t really a benefit as the RCV necks down to a 30 spline shaft after the bearing surface.

I would box and weld reinforcement plates around the tie rod connection points even on the heavy duty axle knuckles . it's one of the weak points that can fail on the trail especially if you do a lot of rock crawling the knuckle will split at the tie rod hole and leave you stuck.

Jason, thank you for putting out such great and frequent content. Your instructional videos very well explained and demonstrated. I find you and I are of much the same mindset on most upgrade issues. I am considering the 60/44 hybrid install both front and rear. I know you choose the 44 Elite front and it looks like you choose the 60/44 hybrid for the rear. I'm pretty much decided on the 60/44 both front and rear because I don't want to upgrade twice and I can get both axles for the price of one real 60, without the added cost of new brakes, wheels and tires. Questions (3): 1) It looks like you choose Eaton E-lockers, but didn't mention the connection on the install video. But I caught a quick clip of you mentioning a harness that allowed you to plug right into the OEM Rubicon wiring/switch. Can you please provide some information on what was necessary,? It would also be great to see this explained in your upcoming install of the rear axle. 2) What gearing did you select?; and 3) What's the largest tire you can fit on your Jeep and still park inside your garage? If I'm tracking properly, you were running 38" Patagonias and they fit in your garage and you mentioned wanting 39" BFG KM3, but settled for 37s due to availability. Could you fit 40s on and still park in the garage?
@AutoEdits

I appreciate this a bunch! Here are my thoughts on your questions... First up... going hybrid 60/44 front and rear is a phenomenal plan and the actual ULTIMATE practical setup. I went with the Elite44 because it was immediately available at the time I ordered (less than two weeks) and I've been comfortable with the 44 center section with my style of driving so far... but the 60 is peace of mind that is priceless on the trail! 1) I have a Rubicon so I just connected the Eaton locker to the stock Jeep harness relay. The add on wiring harness was just to fool the onboard computer to think it was a stock locker and not continually flash on the dash board when activated with the stock switch. I ordered one for the rear install so when it gets here I might be able to show that a bit more. 2) 4.88 gears... it's the perfect compliment to the 37" tires. It was fine for 38" but with a manual trans. going to 39's would be a bit of a stretch for rock crawling. 3) Depends on the top. The supertop ultra had a substantial bow across the top and would rub but fit into my garage with 4.5" of lift and a 38" tire. The Trektop fits with room to spare on the same setup so I felt like I could've easily gone to the 39" or 40" tire with that top. I haven't run the factory hardtop in years so I don't know the height with that. Does that help?

@@AutoEdits Thank you for the prompt reply, and YES, this helps a great deal. Regarding the add-on wiring harness: 1) do you have a part number or link where I can purchase the add-on wire harness; and 2) a link to any video that may be useful on it's install? I appreciate the extra info on soft tops, I saw were you installed 1-ton axles on your friends Jeep and he choose 37s for garage clearance issues, but I noticed he had a large bow in his top. I have an Bestop NX pro with a flat profile so I may be able to squeeze the jeep into the garage with 40s. Thanks for the gearing explanation. I have an 5-sp auto transmission, so I'm looking at the 5.13 or 5.38 gearing to help climb out of the AZ valley in to the high country for cooler wheeling.

Never plan on running 4.5 inches of lift because I am a 2 door so I want to keep it lower anyways. That Fusion is a definite upgrade from the UD44, I am a little bummed about the stock ball joints. @AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
I honestly feel the 44/60 hybrid on the front is more than I need. I'm generally easy on the ring and pinion gears so I want the clearance. The axle tubes are where I need the most strength upgrade and this is the perfect solution. In the rear, I want the bigger ring and pinion of the 60 and the beefy tubes but want to still use my JK brakes and wheels... so the semi float 60 is perfect for that.

Awesome upgrade and congrats on getting everything dialed in right out the gate! I'm curious what the deciding factor was between the Elite 44 and the 60/44 hybrid options. Also curious why you opted for Fusion over others such as the Dynatrac PR44? Did you consider wider axles at all for better scrub radius? I'm running KMC Machetes with 3.5" backspacing on stock Rubicon 44s and it's not too bad, but I could see how a wider axle with less backspacing would improve things. Getting more castor would be my main motivator for an axle upgrade at this time.
@AutoEdits

I don’t think I need the 9.75” pinion of the d60 center section. Would be cool to have but overkill for this application and the elite 44 was in stock and delivered so fast! The steering with these wheels 4.5” backspace is fantastic.

@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
I did... all the top tier axles are close but the track bar mount built in was a big one, the C's are unique and a couple of trusted extreme off road Jeepers who run big dog Fusion axles nudged me this direction because of the build quality. Plus, they got me the axle in less than two weeks so I can run it in Moab next week for EJS... everyone else was months behind. So a combo of things ... can't really knock any of them.

Free spin hubs require a different bolt pattern as the hub ID and OD can't be made small enough to fit a 5x5 bolt pattern. The internal rotating mass isn't really relevant on modified Jeeps as the mass from larger wheels/tires and aerodynamic drag are what reduce the efficiency. Per Jeep, the FAD system on the JL/JT adds 0.2 to 0.5 MPG, depending on model and options. Not enough to care about unless trying to meet CAFE regulations. Free spin hubs require maintenance and add another failure point. For people who don't use 4wd for long periods of time, it can cause premature failure of inner oil seals and air seals in lockers due to lack of lubrication. Spinning = lubrication.

No the ud44 performed fantastic... just that pesky track bar mount was a bit low once I went to 4.5" of lift ... another comment mentioned the artec bracket fixes that so once I would've swapped out the ball joints... the thing would be still good to go in there. I'm just wanting to take the Jeep into a bit tougher direction for the foundation but still keep it interstate and city friendly. Still getting over 16mpg during the break in and driving errands around town.
