I liked this podcast. Sting was so loyal to TNA Wrestling after WCW closed. Every time his contract was up, Dixie would get him to resign for another year. Triple H and Stephanie loved to hear themselves talk. They would talk for 40 minutes. Sting's debut was a homerun. It came across the screen well. I rated this episode a 7/10.

I love Sting but WWE was never going to fit that kind of wrestler and persona. It's like Ric Flair in WWE, whether that be the early 90s or his 2000s run, he was always going to be an NWA/WCW guy. The proof of that is if you compare Flair '89-'90 to Flair in his WWE run in '91-'93, it's obvious that he was forced to not just tone down his character but also dial back his athleticism and abilities, because only Randy Savage gave him a near-great match. He had to slow down, be more methodical, and bringing cheap heat (ie, begging) in his WWF first run so that Hogan and others could look good against him. Yes, he wrestled Bret Hart, and those matches could've been near-great but for whatever reason they were only good. Then again Ric has said he was having issues with his balance, so his timing was off and regrets not giving Bret great matches at that time in WWE. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's a universe of difference between the New York brand of wrestling and everywhere else, at least once upon a time. It's all basically similar these days. Unfortunately, a guy like Sting just wouldn't work in the WWE (RAW/SMACKDOWN) but probably would in a NXT format. While I will admit to thinking about dream matches back in the day, they only work when you allow both competitors and companies keep their mystique. It'd make zero sense to have prime Goldberg or prime Austin to get the win over one another, had that WCW/WWE clash happened. Think NWA (Flair) versus WWWF (Backlund) where both men went to a draw, neither losing face, and neither brand was tarnished. A guy like Sting, in a WWE atmosphere, should've been a one-off thing. Just my opinion. Unfortunately crossover events rarely ever happen anymore, and I miss that about the territories because you saw different champions square off every once in a while. Jesus bless you all 😊

I normally agree with Eric, but his thoughts on Mox are tough to listen to. He has great mic skills, charisma and his new fighting style, hit all three phases. He is a mix of Jericho meets stone cold meets Piper meets jake the snake with bad boy roc and roll. Just sounds like Eric bever saw Mox in the indies b4 wwe or new Japan. His run in AEW just started, characters are developing, he is a tweener loose cannon type. Eric you had Steve Austin and then fired him, honestly how many dimensions did he have in your eyes b4 he got injured?

@douglaspagan4525 4 года назад
@@tompent100 those times of the 80s and late 90s are long gone. Attitude era is when wrestling was at its highest peak. Austin had The Rock, Jericho, Tripple H to work with, also guys were tunning in to see Tori, Trish and Staci. We won't admit that is the real reason we watched ,because times have changed, sex and violence drove the attitude era. The 80s was the Hulk wave, he was the driving force, but if you took hulk out of the equation the gate suffered, pipper was a great charecter, but couldn't draw on his own. In other words..... Moxs is a great building block and a star, but just like Austin he needs a Rock or triple H to work with. Stunning Steve austin did nothing Until Bret made him a made man and then the mr. McMann angle. AEW is just starting to build a rep, but they do not have the luxury of showing Tits and ass, and violent chair shots, bladding ect is a no no with good reason now at days. And last but not least, AEW is on TNT, we are messaging through RU-vid, which means that we spend our time on the phone or computer. Streaming is the way of the world, especially for younger people, Conrad's podcast are based off of the wwe app, AEW will need to get with the times to have a legit shot. So yes Mox is capable of being the man, he was the most over wrestler in 2014, 15 and 16. Roman Reigns only gets cheered with the shield is together. Seth Rollins got booed right into a heel roll because fans got tired of his act. Mox always had an it factor and AEW knows it, that is why he ended the first ppv with Jericho and Omega when he did the run in.
@tompent100
@tompent100 4 года назад
Mox is not a mainstream star and would never be one in any era of wrestling. Hes a great wrestler. And a top guy on the card. But he really doesnt have the natural charisma of a Stone Cold, Jericho, or Piper. The only person in AEW who has that natural charisma as an entertainer/wrestler is MJF
@douglaspagan4525
@douglaspagan4525 4 года назад
@@tompent100 MJF is a great heel. He is your Ric Flair so I agree with you on that, but like I said before. MJF and Mox have to clash so they can become mainstream. MJF is in a story line with Cody and it barely has a pulse. And if we are being honest the only "mainstream" stars would be the rock, hulk, macho and pains me to say Cena.

People waiting for Sting/Undertaker for 15 years - Let's book a match nobody has ever asked for just so HHH can have another manufactured high profile match. Sting since his WCW/Early TNA days talked about two matches, Rock and Taker. The commentary during the match was embarrassing, the presentation of the nWo and DX was comical as DX were never even close at any point to the nWo's impact and influence. Some of the spinoff nWo groups were bigger than the full DX stable. I actually liked the lay out of the match, the pops for the groups coming out. Until HHH won...The forced handshake afterwards and the commentary during it, made it impossible to enjoy it. Before Rollins unsafely injured him there were some great moments with Sting debuting, some of the RAW appearances and the WM debut. But ultimately was ruined by out of touch politics forcing a narrative nobody cares about in a match that wasn't a top priority to most viewers. Especially with Taker working a throwaway match on the same show.

@@MohamedAli-xu3uw Because nobody got buried. Vince was and is about money and not much else. The sole 2 examples of burials are DDP and Sting (to some extent Vader, though nobody really knows what happened there, between "it's a rib" and "it was the clique" there are so many theories). DDP happened because Undertaker played politics and buried him (because he was pissed that DDP didn't sell right and forced Undertaker to plan the matches in advances, DDP took that approach from Randy Savage thinking it would make the most sense to script matches and come up with spots, while Calaway was more of a improvise guy) And isn't Calaway a great example of the saying being bullshit? He was in WCW before he came to the WWF. Did he get buried? Did Ric Flair? Did Arn Anderson? Tully Blanchard? The Steiner Brothers? The Headshrinkers were in WCW before as Samoan Swat Team but became Champions. HHH? Foley? Austin? Are you starting to see how ridiculous that claim is? Booker T, Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero became WWE Champions (in fact 3 of the 5 lowest drawing of all time) despite being WCW guys Jericho was WCW and yet became the first Undisputed Champion (and bombed, yet they still put the belt on him a couple times more, each time it bombed even worse) What about Goldberg? When was he buried? Big Show/Giant? Multiple time Champion, right? Scott Hall came from WCW. Razor Ramon wasn't buried. Kevin Nash came from WCW and was World Champion in Diesel And i mean for fuck sake Giant Gonzalez came from WCW and was immediately hyped as a monster, one of, if maybe even the most untalented wrestler of all time.

Goldberg only lost at Summerslam because of outside interferece (Flair throwing the hammer to HHH) but he defeated HHH at Unforgiven the next month. It was a fucking storyline that saw him becoming Champion. Then he defeated Jericho. Than at one RAW he plowed through Richards, Dreamer, Henry and La Resistance. After that he fought with Batista, speared HHH and at Survivor Series defended his belt against the same guy, despite interference from Evolution. Goldberg was booked like a monster up to his "final" match at WMXX. How is that a fucking burial? Where you even alive back then when it happened? John Cena wasn't the "next Hulk Hogan", he was the original "Roman Reigns". Let's stop pretending that dude was a mega star. He was a machine made attempt to manufacture another wrestling boom period.... He failed, by the way. He was never that caliber. Sorry kids.
@rock316ae
@rock316ae 4 года назад
Some people are actually buying this narrative the company are putting out in the last few years. Cena was a big merchandise and decent house show draw in the first few years of his main event run. Other than that he was never an actual megastar that draws all demos as he wasn't talented, charismatic or appealing enough to cross that barrier. The Rock program aside, which was more Rock anyway. Cena only ever headlined one WM (22), every year when they needed to draw, they went with a special attraction over him.
@HomicideHenry
@HomicideHenry 4 года назад
Cena, in my view, reminds me of that very poor WWF era where the belt was constantly going back to Hulk Hogan because there was nobody there to really get the company behind. Cena's over-inflated title reigns (16x's) in basically a decade, not to mention being a 5x US Champion on top of that, doesn't show me a great wrestler but rather a company void of superstars. To argue he was "the next Hulk Hogan", or is argued as being "the greatest of all time" as some have said, including some international syndicates covering the business full time, is a disgrace. He was simply a guy who had the luxury of being in a pisspoor era in the WWE, and it still hasn't recovered. It's not necessarily his fault that Rock, Austin, Angle, Booker, Taker, etc were essentially retired or working elsewhere or had contracts working once a year, but let's stop pretending he was something he wasn't. When the only guys around you are people like Mark Henry, The Big Show, and HHH whose popularity was at its peak in the 90s or early 2000s, and everybody else was either greenhorns or had zero charisma, what else was there to do but keep giving Cena the title? Yeah, there was Lesnar, but he had a special contract working X amount of time and IMHO having him lose to Cena ruined that mystique because nobody with an educated brain could suspend disbelief enough to ever believe Cena could actually beat him. Anyways, just my two cents worth. Jesus bless you all 😊
