you are right... you can never build them too large. We need to get one built as well and I am already thinking to go bigger than my first thoughts. Drive through is smart. Everyone I have talked to says to position garage doors so you can pull through. One thing I am debating is enclose a small bit of the patio on the south side of the building that gets all the sun for future use as a bit of a small greenhouse to start plants for the garden or flowers for the mrs for around the house. we are within 10 years of retirement and we may have time to tinker with that more then.

Here in East Texas we have fall/spring weather from mid-October thru the end of May...that's 7 months of gorgeous weather! June we start getting summer weather 90's during the day 70's at night with lots of rain...really humid👎 July can get even hotter but the humidity goes away with upper 90's thru September and NO mosquitoes and No flies! You get up early and about 11am you find a fan or THE AC! Evenings are nice and if you swim 👍it's the best! I grew up in Iowa, no way would I go back! Looking forward to your build! A couple of things; 1) have a wood stove in your workshop, 2) high ceilings so you can pallet stack your tractor implements, etc. 3) leave a place for a hydraulic lift or what I did is I put in a pit for changing oil and getting under vehicles. The pit doubles as a tornado shelter if you don't have a basement in the house. In Texas we don't have basements and I grew up in tornado alley in Iowa! 4) use some graphics to put all your stuff in the building to see if you got the right size! Good luck, you'll love it...a hot tub in the gym might be a pool start! Take care my friends👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Mike, if I can make one recommendation, if you plan on heating the shop, plan for in-slab radiant tubing now for your slab pour. There is no better way to heat a large shop then turning the slab into a giant radiant heater. Even if you only plan on heating the game room/gym side, its well worth the up-front cost vs forced air heating.

Totally agree The tube is not that expensive, you can always put heating on it later Even better to put a heat pump on it then you can cool the floor with it in the summer That's especially good for the gym

Got to say, our house up here in the Pacific Northwest is on a slab with in-floor radiant heat. It's the best heat source I've ever had, it doesn't dry the air out and keeps everything nice and comfortable. We use it all winter to keep the house about 60° to 65°, then we use our woodstove to bring things up warmer when we want it. It really cuts down on the amount of wood we need to burn in winter.

Peace and Blessings Melissa and Mike. I am excited that you have made the decision to turn the pretty "wood shed" into an attractive tool and equipment crib for servicing your various attachments and as a place to keep expensive equipment dry and stylishly out of the weather. Also a good refueling station as its location is out of the way and secure. Now, this added structure for the housing of the rest of your large equipment vehicles sounds like a workshop, garage and dream recreational building that will make your complex second to none. Be careful that the project doesn't turn out too perfect as newly acquired friends and neighbors will be hard to get rid of unless you charge rent, or a membership fee. Salutations!!!

We built a 50x64 shed and we enlarged the plans twice during construction. I asked the contractor what we thought and he said " I have never built a building too large for a customer". It will really be nice to have most of the equipment indoors. With our weather in Wisconsin, I really like having all our equipment stored inside. All of the "finishing" costs will FAR exceed the cost of the building. You only get one chance to do it "right". Good luck, Bob

I live in north central Texas and today, July 11th, we had heat index of 111 and actual temp at 99. Forecast for the next four days is actual temp of 100 and heat index at over 110. I am not complaining, I love Texas and wouldn't trade it for anyplace else. The mid summer heat is just part of it and I actually adjust to it and do what I need to do even in the heat. Humidity was not too high day and nice breeze, not too bad. Paul from Texas

I support your rain barrel idea. I have rain barrels that combined collect 1400 litres of water. Algae does grow in the above ground tanks but as we use rain water for the garden it is not a problem. Try to research ultra violet purification. You need to plan in for head pressure by having indoor storage tank. Suitable enough for showers, a hose outlet and toilet tank filling.

Mike, Melissa is right, build it bigger 😉 Trust me, it is cheaper to do it bigger now than trying to add on in a couple of years. I have watched long enough to know that no matter how big you make it, it is going to fill up. BTW, the in floor heat is a great idea. Put in a liquid system, electric has a bad habit of breaking wires if you get any frost movement of your concrete. Have a day.

I'm working on a similar project. 40 x 72 is a real nice size shop/garage. ALWAYS build bigger than you think you will need. In my experience, I cannot emphasize the value & usefulness of lean to's/side sheds on each side of the building. 20' lean to's on each side with a 20' roof extension over the end with the garage doors. The extra cost for concrete for the lean to's and roof extension are well worth it as they provide great storage & multi-purpose use as well as a great place to pressure wash and clean equipment under cover. If going with a steel building, get the 26 gauge steel, request Zack screws for ALL steel fasteners. If a pole barn type building, go with Perma-columns with slab on grade or at least a foundation stem wall of concrete pier in sonotubes with Perma-column brackets. Don't forget about a nice 4 ' or longer slit type drain in the center of the slab floor graded towards the drain to make it easy pressure wash & squeegee. Road Base makes a great foundation base material that packs down great and minimizes settling & concrete cracks. 200 amp power service panel? Insulation? I suspect you already have this building planned out to the small details. Looking forward to see it completed. 👍

In slab radiant is a very nice type of heat. Insulate the slab well. Even if you don't initially want it, insulate the slab and install the tubing if the budget allows. A friend of mine didn't in his barn and he now regrets it. Make sure to run antifreeze in it. The only drawback I have found is it isn't instaheat as my brother used to call it. It takes awhile to change temp due to the mass of the slab. It isn't like flipping on a hot air furnace or ceiling heater.

Think over the floor plan very well and stub up power thru conduits to key locations (tablesaw/planer/etc.) before the pour.

Congrats on the new building guys. You guys sound very excited. Life is good and you two deserve it. Weather has even been hot here in Wyoming. The only good thing is it won't last long. Summer is very short here. Thanks again for the videos. They help keep things sane in this crazy world. A wonderful day to the Morgans and take care.

You might reconsider the 10x10 overhead. 12’ wide is ideal for full-size vehicles and tractors.

That's great! So happy for you. It's good your going bigger because there never big enough. Are you putting infloor heating in it with outdoor wood boiler seeing you have an endless supply of wood? I would recommend it, great heat.

Central Ca., 9 days over 100...high 106...weather bimbo says at least 7 more to go...but humidity low compared to your neck of the woods. Have fun, smile a lot, it confuses your enemies.

Was in the 90's and really humid here in NE CT yesterday. No AC so 85 degrees and 69% humidity in the house last night! We've had a lot of rabbits too. Currently a bunch of baby bunnies as well. Lots of clover this year could be the reason
