Part 21: The 1991 Chevrolet (Chevy) Project Shop Truck has air conditioning! In part 1, I showed you three different a/c compressors and chose to use the low mount Dirty Dingo compressor. In this install, I show you how to install the compressor on your LS motor for a truck application AND install the motor with the a/c to show what modifications are needed to make it fit the OBS truck frame.

A few highlights:
1) If using an engine with the 3 cast in mounting bosses (where only 2 are tapped) it is necessary to drill and tap the lower boss to mount this kit.
2) Spacers are provided for the upper mount and for the tensioner. Read directions carefully, it will tell you which bolts and spacers to use in each application.
3) Take your time drilling and tapping
4) The framework is not difficult, position your engine in the frame prior to cutting to be sure of where you will cut, don't guess.

Oddly enough, the kit for the a/c parts cannot be found on the Dirty Dingo Site using the above part # even though it shipped from DD. It may be a specific # used by Amazon. The part # for the fittings is on the DD site, but not on Amazon.
As I mentioned in the video, I wanted to post up what the parts cost. However, I did not want to add this expense to the total of the project truck. Reason? It is optional and a lot of people may choose not to run a/c. In my case I will need it and made the decision to go this route.

Great video. I used ICT upper a/c mount. It gave the factory truck alt balance . But this is good advice. Thanks.

Good evening sir. Im doing a swap on my 91. How would i connect the 4l60e shift linkage wire to the truck(steering column) ? Seeing that it had a 700r4(rod shift linkage)
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 9 месяцев назад
My '91 was a manual trans, so I didn't have that issue to deal with. I have heard (I am not an expert on this issue) that if you check out the the automatic shifters out of '90-94 3/4 and 1 ton OBS trucks, that they use the linkage you need. I am not able to confirm this, but it is a route you can check out to see if it will fix your issue. I know many others have dealt with this in the past, so, don't give up, a solution is out there. When you do find the right fix for your truck, let me know how it worked out. Thanks for the question. Good luck.

@@laurencevillegarage I couldn't find anything regarding this "burden". But eventually I did just last night. I learned that, I can just use the stock shift linkage from my 91. Just a little modification is needed(to the linkage). I'll let you know how it goes, once I get to it...and thank you.

@@laurencevillegarage do you know if there is a mount to be able to use the ac compressor that comes on a 98 Tahoe?
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
@@hanktownsend7911 Yes, Dirty Dingo makes one that will allow you to use your existing R4 compressor.

@@laurencevillegaragedo you think that instead of drilling and tapping the block it would be possible to extend the lower bracket mabey weld an ear and then use the factory tapped hole mabey with a washer or a spacer if needed
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage Год назад
@@Brandon_obs_ls I would need to crawl underneath the truck and see. It's been a bit since I installed that unit. I understand what you mean, I think if you got creative, that might work. It would be more work I think. Drilling/taping the hole was not difficult to do, but you do want to be very careful when you do it and pay attention to your drilling depth.

this seems to be the easiest part of the job, im more interested in how and what is needed to connect the lines and condenser and drier etc and charging the system...
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 8 месяцев назад
Putting a "low mount" compressor in an OBS is work. The frame has to be modified to allow clearance not only to mount it, but to have enough room to allow removal in the future without lifting the motor up for clearance. Having said that, all the remaining a/c parts are what would be correct for a 1991 Chevy truck. The only "modified" parts would be the hoses going to the compressor. I would use the "original" end of the hose that mounted to the accumulator and the condenser then have hoses made to connect to the manifold that attached to the compressor. I used a company called "Hose-Fast" located in Garland Tx. They made what I needed while I waited. It was not expensive. The 2 hoses I had made were $35-45 each (if I remember correctly). As far as charging up the system, I took it to a friends garage and he had the proper equipment to vacuum out the system and oil/charge it back up. It did not matter that it was an aftermarket compressor and custom lines. The fittings are all there to do the job. If I did it again, the only change I might make would be to remove the factory low pressure switch and replace with a 'trinary" switch. Why? The factory compressor had a high pressure switch built into the back of it. The new compressor does not. This can leave my system vulnerable to issues if I have a high pressure problem. By removing the low pressure switch and replacing it with a "trinary" switch, that one switch controls the high pressure cut-off, low pressure cut-off AND will switch on an electric fan at a set pressure. The advantage to that is the fan does not need/have to run as much. With the LS pcm, the fan is wired so that when the a/c button is activated, the fan is as well. If you have a cold engine, you really don't need the fan on at that moment. With the "trinary", the fan will be activated, but not until the a/c system builds up to a set pressure. Meaning the start up of the motor and a/c, the engine is not hot, or even warm. Turning on the fan at that moment adds load to your electrical circuit and additional wear on the fan(s). Over a period of time, that adds up to a lot of minutes/hours that your fan is not running because it is not needed yet. A "trinary" is not expensive and is not difficult to wire up. Check RU-vid, there are plenty of videos about how to wire one up. They also (usually) install with a schrader valve. Means that it can be added or replaced without having to discharge your system. If it ever needs replacement, simply unscrew it and do the wiring part. That can even be done with a simple 4 wire plug. No need to take it to someone to discharge it and recharge it. Therefore, saves you $. A long answer, but, I hope it helps you out.

It can be, depends on the look you want and other things like if you want to run a turbo. I am looking for a totally stock look for the '01 5.3. I've run the R4 and Sanden compressors on top and the upper mount was some work as well, just in a different way. All depends on the compressor of choice and what brackets you choose to do the job. I wanted something different and usually choose the harder way on most things!
@custom99banshee

I have a 93 Sierra with an ls. I bought the same bracket then decided to just do the top mount. My question is though.. where did you put the high pressure cut out. I just vacuumed mine out and filled it today and when filling ( not even a can in yet ) it shot the orifice tube threw the bottom tube of the condenser coil
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
Wow! I've never heard of that happening. Originally, I left everything original and adapted the hoses to fit the R4 compressor at its new position. I left all the sensors in their original or near original positions. Even on the "91 with the low mount Dirty Dingo compressor, sensors are in their original positions.
@genechoate5020
@genechoate5020 Год назад
I have seen it happen on the Cadillac’s before and that would break the suction temperature sensor. There were two orifice tube designs depending on the year of truck, one went in the evaporator inlet the other went in the condenser outlet, they’re not interchangeable.

Keep them coming. Do you have to make your own ac lines? Also are u using holy terminator?
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
I will need to have a couple lines made. I had hoped I could modify the existing lines but I think they will both be several inches short. I’ll wait until the heater hoses and exhaust manifolds are on to finalize their exact positions. Not using Holley, I’ll modify my own harness and use the original pcm. It’s off to the programmer now.
