Learned a few things today, shimming the pistons when compressing another one if there's more than one off the rotors and the science behind why you need to brake steady when new pads are fitted and not come to a full stop or hard braking until enough braking time has passed in order to that the pad and rotor are keyed to each other. Brilliant show, TY Oh and you got me doing * gravity, thanks for that lol

Ray last week I had to put new pads, front & rear on my 2012 Ram 1500 two wheel drive. The truck had 35k miles on it when I bought it in 2016. I put 100k miles on it, the pads were wore down to the thickness of a quarter. I didn’t know that it had dual piston aluminum calipers, had to go buy a compressing tool, before my vehicles had single piston cast iron calipers, I used a 6” C-clamp & old pad to compress the piston. Ray I’ve learned a bunch by watching your videos. I didn’t buy caliper hangers because I had a heavy duty wire clothes hanger. I’m glad that you done this video so I could comment plus thank you. P.S. today I’m watching Rainman on a rainy Texas day🙂🙂. Keep’m coming

60+ years ago when I first started working on cars our shop had a bowling ball sized steel vessel with a hose coming out the bottom and a filler cap on the top. You uncapped the top and poured in a quart of brake fluid After sucking all of the old fluid from the master cylinder, one end of the hose was then fastened to the master brake reservoir with an airtight seal. The vessel was then pressurized to about 10-15 pounds, you used the same procedure you used here to bleed each wheel catching the old fluid in an open container using a clear vinyl tubing until the old fluid went clear. A lot less fluid wasted and it took about half the time for the same result, and the apparatus cost less than 50 bucks. The new way is neat, but our "old" was was more efficient and a lot cheaper.

OEM rotors are usually going to be made of better quality metal than aftermarket. Seems like a waste of resources not to turn those original rotors if there is enough metal left on them rather than replace with aftermarket ones. Costwise it's more labor involved, but then one is getting OEM quality and not tossing still usable rotors.

I have the exact same Powerstop Extreme Carbon Fiiber pads on my '16 Ram 1500. They took a lot longer than normal to get bedded in, but once they did, the truck can stop so much better verse OEM. Word of warning: during the pad bedding process, the pad will chatter and make a ton of noise. I was very concerned. It took about 500 to 600 miles to get fully bedded in. That brake bleed machine is awesome.

@guhammer261
@guhammer261 Год назад
Dear Ray, first of all, I love your videos and like many others, even watching a break job on your channel is kind of fun even though I've done many of them on my own. That being said, please allow me to deliver a well meant piece of advice to you about carbon fibre break pads. Indeed the carbon fibre is embedded into the friction material among other components which are not used in conventional brake pads. The upside of such pads is usually that they do not produce as much black break dust as conventional pads do; i.e. your rims will look cleaner for a longer period of time. In terms of break performance they are not worse than conventional pads, at least not in terms of normal use. Don't think they'd be suitable for race track. And last not least, my impression from using several sets of them on my own cars was that they wear slower and also cause less wear on the rotors. However there is a downside to them too: The friction material is building a so called 'transfer layer' on the rotors. This is by intention and the transfer layer is actually enhancing the friction between pad and rotor, thus creating the break power. (After a few hundred miles, one can see the transfer layer as a slighty blueishly layer on the metal of the rotor. As said, nothing wrong with that, that is intended to happen and caused by the ingredients to the friction material of the pads.) The problem starts when the transfer layer becomes mechanically disturbed (micro cracks in the surface). Water will go underneath the transfer layer and cause corrosion on the rotor surface which will not be ground away by the pads when breaking as the transfer layer is still covering it on the top. The corrosion can then go deeper and deeper and by the time the transfer layer will becom weak and break away, the corrosion of the rotor surface is so advanced that the pads can not grind it away anymore. The rotors will develop deep grooves over time and become unusable. On my own cars it did not always happen... in some cases the rotors survived 2 or 3 sets of pads until they became due to be changed by reaching their minimal dimensions in thickness. But sometimes the effect as described above did kick in quite early. So long story short: I stopped using carbin fibre pads and live with dirty rims especially on the front axle. The carbon fibre pads do not break better (as maybe implied by marketing as everybody is thinking of carbon rotors in ultra high performance cars which is a completely dfferent story and has nothing to do at all with these break pads). And I avoid the risk of loosing new rotors prematurely by inappropriate wear patterns between pad and rotor.

Great step by step but I did all rotors off and one at a time pads and fluid exchange. Did brake pump on one side and rotor off still. My 4 hour brake job became day and half cause my caliper was difficult to fix when piston came out. Learned fast on what not to do. Extra cost to purchase a caliper. Oh and over tightening the bleeder valve broke and had to buy a replacement valve too. It was expensive mistake to me. Oh yeah day and half was cause when I got my caliper found it was for a dodge not my Pontiac. Same part number but wrong part in the box. Just got to love o’Reilly’s.

I've watched all of your videos from day 1. And things you say I'm doing it now for example I refer my wife to the wife unit and I saw I'm always looking for loomiens. And when I refer to my dodge ram I call it a Ramacus. Keep up the great work I watch the videos in Wisconsin and I miss working on my teucks.

Great video now I know why after a brake service I bet they let air in. It was a great petal then soft after

I don't know how you think you are going to introduce air at the bleeder valve when you take off the vacuum pipe when the whole system from the master cylinder reservoir is under fluid pressure from the fluid exchange machine.

You have warped me too Ray I have actually started saying " nice and shiny" every time I break out a can of brake clean. LOL

On the new F150s snap on makes an aluminum magnet for flashlights, just saying, they also have a blinker fluid inspection tool.

I have been retired from the business for 30 years now and watching you do brake jobs makes me wonder if techs still use brake lathes.

I’m not a mechanic but I would bet probably not. It’s almost never cost effective to have the rotors machined. Just put new ones since it’s the labor that’s the most expensive part of a brake job.

"techs" replace parts, mechanics used to fix things. It now costs too much to fix things. R&R means Remove and Replace nowadays.

I did not know about caliper compressors. I put the new pads on the bridgeport and made them fit.

Wow, so your brand new pads ended up the same or less thick than the ones you were replacing. LMAO !! That's an awesome story ! Cheers

I find the side of those polishing disc works pretty well around the stud's I keep a couple of glazed pad's, it can tear the pad's a bit, great job, I've seen people do brakes and when you mention the slides, it's Or they'll be right, all the best to you and your loved ones

A brake job, flush and Brazilian no wax required. The F150 new it was in good hands no more vibration required.

Yep, carbon fiber in the pad is the thing now. I did power stop carbon fiber pads, rotors and their calipers. Works great.

Ray, love your work and the videos! But that "make some space" part explains a lot about the missing 10mm sockets and wrenches.

The carbon fibre brake pads are pretty cool as I go for them as it has very little brake dust in comparison to the metal sintered pads.

9:28 I was wondering where your rotary cleaning tool was. I was impressed by it when I first saw you use it. I've since added the pads like you are using, but didn't get a rotary tool. You would use it way more than I would. Just one of those tools that's nice to have when you need it.
