Ray, I drove a wrecker like yours for many years! For what your doing, it was a great purchase. Driving well over 750,000 miles with that exact CAT engine and transmission. The blower motor is easy to change out and if the Freon holds up the truck will freeze you out. I'd suggest you put some labels on the control box, so you know what is bed in or out, tilt up and down, winch in out ect. The truck is built like a tank. The AC system is exactly from a older Chevy Silverado.

After you are done fixing all the little things on the new truck, get a good sign painter to or an overlay that identifies your business and its location and phone number on both doors. This should happen to your dually pick-up also. Never miss a chance to let people know about your business and your location and how to get in touch with you. Anyone who has owned a pickup truck knows this - it's good to have a friend who owns a pickup truck. You get to help your friends move. LOL.... You just eclipsed that, you have your own tow truck. With a stinger on the back. 4-wheel float with a stinger. You get to help me move my car hoard! :) I think this was a good business investment for you, and you can do the repairs it needs to be a reliable workhorse for you. Great purchase Ray! I drove wreaker for many years and had fun doing it. Just some helpful tips. Get the valves replumbed so that the wheel lift controls are on first 2 valves and bed controls on the remaining valves. Get all valves labeled and mount lights inside the control boxes in case you ever have to recover a vehicle at night. You don't need the wheel lift for stabilization for running the bed. Leave it in the up position and retracted. If you plan on using the wheel lift to tow, you will have to invest in tow lights for the towed vehicle. Definitely look into the switch for the high idle feature. It will save a lot of headaches. Not sure about the laws in Florida, but here in Ohio you have to have the vehicle secured on the bed with 4 points of securement. They do not recognize the winch as a means of securement..

I don't know if this has already been answered, but usually most IDLE UPS are part of the cruise control system (at least on most trucks I've driven). Use the good ole GM multi-dysfunction switch that you normally use for cruise control. Turn on switch, hit set, then use the accel to increase rpm, and the end switch to decrease rpm. Hopefully that works for you, by the condition of the truck, the lever/switch might need replaced. My personal pickup has the same one and gives me issues at times LOL. By the way you came all the way here to my hometown to pick up this beauty. Hope to see more flatbed content upgrades and usage in the future!!!

Nice start Ray, "Resale Red." Just a FYI... If that bed has a pivot trunnion on the end of the frame... Meaning the bed and the rollback cylinder hinge there, be sure and keep'em greased because like the old Groves if they are ignored the pins will seize up and they are a real bear to free up. Back in the day I used to install Grove which is now JerrDan and Mid Equipment rollbacks. Last I heard, you shouldn't use the winch as a hold down. Most state DOT requires 4 corners secured. One never knows where or when one of their "revenue rangers" will appear and require you to stand an equipment check. Case in point, I was once driving a brand new Tri Axle Mack with less than 300 miles showing and got stopped in a line of traffic. Took almost 45 minutes till I got clear. . . Ya might want to make sure you have a set of triangle reflectors and a fully charged fire extinguisher also. Wishing you every great success with this fine American built machine. Oh yeah, nobody regularly services their hydraulic systems until they're experiencing operational issues. That should have a filter on it. Lots of'em in the 60s didn't Some had screens. At least change the filter. Throw a magnet in the reservoir. Wishing you all the very best. 👍🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸

One thing you'll love if the rubber pad is intact, is the push bumper to help get cars inside. Most rollbacks do not have them, but for a quick push in they can't be beat. Also being a C65 or C75 the truck will hold up/tow better than the 1 tons, F450, or the C30 HDs. Check with DOT, STATE AND FEDERAL for requirements on tags and DOT numbers as well as insurance. If you're not on city, county, or state rotation lists it will make a huge difference in your insurance costs. My car insurance company would not write me a policy if I did rotation calls. Also be sure the car you haul is covered by your policy, use to be known as on hook coverage. Do your homework, some states have special tags and regs for tow truck/rollback trucks whether on rotation or not. And yes you need 4 point tie downs and the winch cable dos not count as a tie down. Straps or chains with binders at all 4 corners/wheels.

Nice purchase Ray but it needs some TLC. Some things you did wrong. 1) You had your front J-Hooks upside down. Your way does work BUT placing them over the control arms with the hook down is much safer. 2) Wheel lift should always be fully up before tilting the bed, if your going to use it to stabilize lower it after the bed is down. 3) Leave the vehicle on the bed in neutral and use a safety chain on the vehicle (don't rely on the winch to keep it in place). 4) Use the T-Hooks (frame rails have spots just for those hooks both front and back) on the rear chains instead of wrapping the control arms/rear axle. Again your method will work but isn't the safest/best method. Some things I learned towing for over twenty years with about twelve on tilt loads. Never over rev the PTO and always turn it off before moving the truck. Label your bed controls until your can use them without even looking at them. Clean and oil that winch cable at least every few months if you want it to last. Keep your chains clean, a dirty chain will rust fast. Last one is check your local laws, some states require tow operators to carry up to date log books at least one state trooper gave me grief because I wasn't carrying a log book because the province I towed in didn't require me too, no ticket but he did advise me to grab one asap.

Subscribed to the “Wife Unit”’s channel. She’s up to 24.5 subscribers now. Cool truck, dual bed controls are an added bonus. Your diesel prices aren’t as bad as up north, nearly $8 per gallon here. Thankfully no diesel powered vehicles here, but now everyone should understand why all the stuff we buy costs more. The Villages, it can be a nice place to live. I have family and friends that currently live there. My in-laws lived there when they were alive. It has quite a reputation for certain diseases and I’ll go no further with the statement. We were planning on retiring there, but maybe somewhere else in Central Florida. Good to see that you’re still making great content at the new place and it appears to be moving along well. Hey Ray, I love it! The truck appears to be in very good condition other than some mechanical issues you're quite able to fix. I like the red and black look going on with it. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it. Nice too that the wife unit gave you her blessing and that she and the dog unit came along for the ride. Cheers!

For a good replacement dash. Find an 89 chevy truck. In 89 the plastics used in the dash had uv additives to prevent dash shattering. The hole for the instrument cluster harness is different but all you have to do is cut the hole bigger and plug the harness to instrument cluster before installing cluster. Hope it helps

Awesome addition to the business!!! Don't worry about older vehicles for business especially if they are cost effective especially if you are a mechanic lol. Always good to see a business growing and I hope for your continued growth as time goes on. Love the sound of air brakes releasing as it's a very cool sound! I would highly suggest a front and rear dash cam along with a interior camera just for your safety along with a good aftermarket gps as the receivers are way better than your cellphone is. I currently am a field tech and have three to four cameras on my car as well as a good gps as my gps hasn't ever lost signal even when my phone has. My personal favorite gps is garmin however that is just a preference. Anyways stay safe and have a great day!!!!

Having run a 1 ton wheel lift and almost exact roll back/wheel lift like this one for a body repair shop I would suggest taking a course for using/learning vehicle to it maximum and safest potential, there is a lot of knowledge to be had by doing so. Nice find, should be a great asset for the repair business. Cool seeing Wife Unit enjoying the time with you!

I know that is an older carrier unit but as a tow truck builder I would recommend to Check your hydraulic lines, make sure they arent flopping around in the chassis or at rub points. Find the serial plate for it and cross reference with the companies website. I.e. if it is a Chevron bed go to miller industries website and they have manuals in the upper right for parts break downs. Also the wheel lift up/down, wheel lift in/out controls are normally next to each other. The same with bed in/out and bed up/down. So unless my dyslexia kicked in...... Might want to check that out. Final thing, the umbilical and winch hydraulic lines, check the track they run in. Overtime with enough use the electrical will rub itself raw causing electrical issues in the deck.

Nice purchase Ray another subscriber mentioned this but I’ll repeat his warning, tying down your load using the wench is not only unsafe but I believe if you look it up illegal.. you need to invest in proper wheel tie downs and have 4 points of connection to the bed. Never trust the wench to hold your load. We’ll look the other way this first time but we’d like to see you safe and not sorry..

Man that truck brings back memories. I used to be a tech at a wrecking yard installing engines trans etc and after work I would take the 02 gmc top kick out to pick up auction cars. That truck had 1.5 million and burned more oil than diesel but it wouldn't die and just kept going. The pto switch was right beside the drivers seat on the floor in Mine. Nice buy tho. Great video sir 👍🏻

RAy excellent addition to the company. I know you can make it into a huge asset. Just one observation as a recovery driver myself. It looked like you had the front end of the van held just by the winch at the front. It is much safer to use ratchet straps or chains on each wheel. If the winch fails for any reason the car becomes free. I have seen it happen. Great video.

Same powerplant that's in my 96 30' Diesel Pusher RV (mine is the 250hp model). I have zero complaints about mine - been a very good unit for me. Something to consider - a TSD fuel card now that you have another diesel rig that's a tad larger size (and it's easier to use the truck lanes for larger rigs - I love mine)

That ultra-low first gear is gonna save your clutch nicely. Don't need any revs to pull away from a stop, just ease the clutch at idle and it should take off smoothly. Then get into the loud pedal and practice double-clutching. 😁

Several thousands of hours driving tow trucks of all varieties, and the only advice I can offer is do not use the wheel lift as a stabilizing unit for the bed. You can blow the seal in the lift (yes, it happened to me) and that makes for no fun if you don’t realize and the wheel lift starts dragging as it leaks down. To either side of the wheel lift unit are a couple of flat steel pads, that is your stabilizing points. And add a 4x6 that you can throw under them if you decide to use your rig for recoveries.

I'm a commercial driver. Most commercial trucks have it setup to increase idle through the cruise control, if it equipped. Make sure parking brake is on, turn cruise on, depress and hold the set/resume button. Typically set increases rpms and resume decreases. If it doesn't work it's Typically a setting in the computer. Fyi, at some point you will need a DOT number and possibly a CDL to drive on public roads. Good luck to you brother.
