This brings back way to many memories. The amount of time I spent in my deck truck was way to much. I missed a lot of my kids school activities. My 22 year old son is still pissed off at me for missing a lot of his growing years. I hope when he has kids he does not have to work his ass off like I did. My 20 year old daughter understood why I worked my ass off to make sure they did not go without anything and that they did not have the horrible childhood that I had. Now I am on permanent disability from a serious work accident in 2013 and my son is even more pissed of at me because I can not work.

I did work at Ford dealership back in 1997 and I was the trans guy, I rebuilt a lot of those 4R70W's and this one from the looks of the magnet shows exactly what you said way too much clutch material. It could be rebuilt but you do not do that so yes it would be beneficial for you and the cust. to replace with a re-man trans. BTW I was very impressed with your tow truck skills, awesome job Ray!
@darrenairey5938
@darrenairey5938 Год назад
Did you rebuild any 4f100's?? And why does this happen? I know the radiator somehow mixes coolant with tranny oil but why would the setup be like this and can you just bypass the rad and run just the oil cooler? I have the same truck but a 7700 heavy half and it has a 4r100 I did replace the coolant bypass hose so I guess coolant is used to cool the transmission? I will have to keep an eye out for this issue.
@jacksmith2315

@Darren Airey the radiator is a d ual purpose like most automatic trans vehicles, the rad cools coolant and trans fluid. Rad fails internally, they mix

Great channel Ray. Would recommend for safety to add another wire rope clamp and a thimble to your winch. It will save you the headache if the one clamp slips and the vehicle rolls of the ramp and you have to chase it. Or worse it crashes into something/someone. The thimble will make the wire rope last longer by putting less stress on the wire at the eye. Big fan of your channel keep up the good work!

I would change the wire rope entirely. Those crosby’s are trash. Get one with the posi hook, to avoid catching the bed. Re-plumb the valve body, (move the hydraulic lines) to where the lever functions are in correct order. Baby steps though.

Ray I think you need to do some tow truck maintenance…..about a case of break clean to clean up all that old grease then inspect wire rope for broken wires …..lubricate cables,free wheel lever etc. if wire rope passes inspection add a couple of Crosby clamps ( don’t saddle a dead horse) You should also carry a couple of short 4x4 with you to keep against the back of the wheel as you winch unit up…a broken cable will just ruin your day…the second is to put in front of wheel so the towed vehicle doesn’t ruin you cab when your tilting bed back up….I personally use the blocks every time so you don’t forget when you actually need them 😉

Another great video, thank you. Your winch rope termination desperately needs some attention before it fails. The rope eye has fallen out and the bulldog clamp is the right way around but would be safer with 2 more. One to keep the (NEW) eye nicely in place and another near the dead end of the rope to make it all nice and tidy.

Correct call on the transmission. The amount of clutch material in that pan says the unit was on its way to failure long before the coolant contamination. The solenoids and other electronics could become problematic due to the coolant contamination, even if you successfully flushed the transmission. A reman transmission is the best course of action.

Surely that's not carnage, it's trucknage, right? Right?? :D :D :D I'm with you 100%. I think if it was a normal commuter truck, maybe we could get away with a flush, but with this being a packed-full work truck that the owner needs to be reliable and work-truck-y, a good rebuilt trans is the best way to go. I love your PTO idle-up block! Gave me a good chuckle first thing in the morning! :D

This isn't a mechanic working on his own stuff. This is a professional selling his service to the public. If the owner dumps a pile of money just for the transmission to crap out in a few months, he is going to tell people he just spent a pile of money having it serviced by Ray. The tiny profit today and gambling on a likely short term solution isn't worth the possible poor customer experience.

I had a GF's car that did same thing. Inner mix. Those cheap dodge neons had a tube running inside the radiator that circulated transmission fluid through the coolant to keep the transmission cool. That tube broke on the inside and it pushed transmission fluid into the radiator until the cooling system got up to temp then it pushed back into the transmission system. Did a driveway transmission flush after we figured it out then drove it to a true transmission shop to get a full flush. Did catch it pretty quick and that car lived on for a few more years.

I'm a former Tow truck driver , you need to always hook up the back end and send it down before you put it in park, you always want to hook the back end up you wanna cross chain it, and once you've got it since down to where it doesn't move, then put it in park , otherwise the vehicle could slowly come forward and drop the front Chains And then you would have an unsecure load on your bed

Hey Ray….quick correction about the Robinson Preserve….you are right/wrong-ish. I do believe the land you pointed out might have belonged to the Robinson’s at one time BUT Robinson Preserve is still very much still there. One of the sidewalk outlets from it is a little East of that hotel/marina area. And yes, still not allowed to have anything gas powered anywhere in it. They do allow fishing now and kayaking and they have recently (last couple or so years) added another huge area to that park with more kayak storage and launch and more trails. Edit: as for the transmission. Two courses of thought. The proper/correct course of action is trans, hoses,rad replacement. Hands down the right thing to do but extremely expensive. That being said…option 2 is solely based on the customer and his budget and risk taking…flush the snot out of it and replace the rad, trans filter, and all hoses. Assuming that trans has never been opened to even change the filter (most likely) and has well over 100k miles of towing/hauling heavy…that much material is to be expected. The fact that it drove itself into the shop twice means that the clutches and valve body passages might still be good. Still a 50/50 shot of working, at best. He might get another 1 mile or he might get another 25k miles (doubtful due to age/mileage) to allow him to save up for a rebuild or salvage trans.

By the time I left in my 50's, there was no camping everywhere, despite all the homeless camps, condos and resorts that took over all the shoreline with monster mansions that popped up on all the decent spots from the shoreline to the mountain top. It's almost more than a person can handle in a lifetime. Now I'm in Virginia and pretty much all the ocean and river shorelines have developed properties with no trespassing. Of course this area, like Florida, has a lot of old time money from generations past, so it's been this way for a long time. What I wonder about all those shoreline estates, many built in not much more than big sandbars, is how long will they last. North Carolina has practically whole seaside neighborhoods being washed into the ocean. Now instead of driving around admiring the natural beauty of these areas, we instead marvel at how much money people have to build mansions and load the driveways and garages with expensive toys. Sorry, I shouldn't have jumped in this comment in Ray's channel, but it struck a nerve.

It was probably easier/quicker to bend over and wipe up the ~6" circle of fluid after moving the vehicle out of the lift area. Actual automatic transmission fluid shower/shampoo incidents are pretty rare in a shop (one learns quickly, lol... or so I once... read ;-) ). Reason for that square black plastic catch "pan" on top is because it's a relatively large target. If you were trying to drain into a 10" circular target then, yes, it would probably be worthwhile to pull fluid from the dipstick tube.
