I actually inherited a Bell and Howell from the late 50’s that is in pristine, and I mean PRISTINE condition! It had everything from the purchase tag on the case, to a still half full small tin container with “Projector Oil”! I tried it with a junk reel, and it works perfect!

@@TheMediaNerdMT Yes they tend to chew the film up. Sometimes you can't remove the film from the machine with out breaking it. If it is a magnetic sound film they are very tricky to splice. You can't cover the stripe with tape

I understand it is your business to convert film but you are leaving out the experience of viewing as people did in the 1950’s etc and watching reels with friends and family. It’s the cool, history factor that makes it fun and amazing to those who never experienced it I collect Bolex and other cameras and projectors and with a bit of know how from RU-vid, this is a fun and unique experience in this digital age

I do remember the days my father would pull out the slide projector and screen to view photos. He never shot on 8mm film. It was a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, the projectors being sold on eBay, thrift stores and garage sales are not refurbished. They are sold as is and for some reason, people just think they will work just fine and then the family film gets destroyed. It's sad and I have heard of this from time and time again over the past 20+ years.

That's cool. I have a few 8mm projectors along with a ton of old video cameras (8mm and vhs). When people bring me there media to transfer, they sometimes give me there old cameras instead of throwing them away. I really don't have any idea what to do with the stuff, I just put it all in storage. I am not a packrat but I hate to throw that stuff away for some reason. Good talking with you!

It's a great video. I got myself an Atlas Warner super 8 film editor with all parts intact, and almost no wear from a goodwill store for only 9 Bucks. I don't have any 8mm film, but, I will try to make some basic film from paper.And will try to make some simple animations on it.

Hi , to digitize, did you ever try just use a cam recorder or a mobile an capture /record the projected screen? have a ton of film to digitize with big size rols and i think wolverine does not handle the big size ones because they dont fit ? thanks
@TheMediaNerdMT
@TheMediaNerdMT Год назад
When I first started film transfers, I would use a camera and point it at the screen. It works pretty good but you need a speed control on the film projector so you don't get a flicker on the camera you are using. You also need to setup the camera properly for frame rate. Check out my 16mm transfer video. The pro model of the Wolverine and the Kodak reels does handle the 400 ft reels. It is really best to use one of those. It does take a long time but worth it. If you want to transfer the film yourself you can use de the Kodak reels. I find this the best machine out of all of the consumer/proconsumer machines. I have a video that you can check out with a link to Amazon if you want to purchase it. If you want a really clean transfer here is a RU-vid channel that can help you. youtube.com/@Filmboy24?si=9ip5G9qjWvMUwE6m

Paid ten bucks for a 1948 B&H 8mm projector. Spent twice that on parts and hours of labor just to get it back to satisfactory working condition. Also bought several inexpensive films to run through it before I use it for anything cool. I don’t have any films to digitize, I just wanted to mess with an old projector.

Thank you for the great video. I want to collect a few 8mm and super 8mm cartoon to show to my children but i am really afraid to buy the wrong machine that needs expertise, spare prts, maintenance...etc. Would you be kind enough to reply with two to three models that i can find and buy online from USA or Japan that can produce sound, maintenance free, idiot proof and not expensive?
@TheMediaNerdMT
@TheMediaNerdMT Год назад
The big one that I showed in the video that I said was heavy is a really good one to get for super 8 with sound. As far as maintenance, spare parts... Good luck, all of these machines are very old and have been refurbished. Bulbs can be hard to find. I purchased a lot of my 8mm projectors from this person in Texas. 8mm16mmfilms.com/ If you want to convert 8mm and super 8mm film with no sound, then get the Kodak Reels 8mm film digitizer over the Wolverine. Both models are nice but I have started using the Kodak and prefer it over the Wolverine. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

One of the fastest ways to kill film is run in through an old projector that is damaged and/or improperly setup. Another is over cleaning the film.

Exactly. Only a couple of drops of pec cleaner is all it takes to get the dust off and to make it run smoothly.

nice video but remove your #3 Never a bad idea to use a projector somoene gave you..... same mystery when you buy one. Read about it, read the manual etc. Then use a junk reel of film and give it a try. You may have trash or a treasure and you wont know unless you try it out.
@TheMediaNerdMT
@TheMediaNerdMT 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comment. However, a section can not be just "removed" from a video once on You Tube. I base my opinion on all of the stories I have heard over the past 20 plus years of people purchasing/accepting/finding projectors and damaging film because the projector is bad. Most projectors purchased don't come with manuals and most manuals are hard to find. Most sellers don't know a thing about that they are selling and just say that it is working in the description. People also don't have a "junk" reel to try things out. They just put in there family film. What you are saying is a good way to do things but it doesn't happen that way unfortunately.

@@TheMediaNerdMT I just got back into the projector game. Been a while. I've purchased a chinnon iq4000gl. It's been a long while, and I can't find any forums like used to exist in the past. If I may ask, what is the actual difference between the chinon iq4000 and just the 4000? I have lots of old stock, I was collecting post 2000 when I was in my early teens twenties, and I've forgotten alot. It's bugging me a little.

@nicholassheffo5723
@nicholassheffo5723 Год назад
I guess this is meant to be a comedy and it is good you show how projectors can damage film, but three of the four models you showed are really cheap bad ones, while the Elmo is a very valuable, still-expensive machine that is on the rare list of projectors that plays both magnetic soundtracks on a Super 8 film print. Outside of the silly point of film bunching, it works great once tested. I'm sure you don't think your viewers are THAT stupid.

@nicholassheffo5723
@nicholassheffo5723 Год назад
@@TheMediaNerdMT So it is silly. That you for the verification. My fear is that someone will throw away an increasingly valuable, or priceless machine in the confusion and Elmo made several variants of that one, including for optical Super 8 from overseas. Probably should have added a :0) to my comment. Thank you.

I had the same feeling: "Is this meant as comedy"? Primarily because I cannot use projector #1, then not #2, not even #3 or #4. So what can I actually use? I my experience (though I am not an 8mm enthusiast but have a few projectors and a box of film) the only projectors to avoid are those without sprockets that relies solely on the claw mechanism to pull the film through. They tend to be quite tough on the film and they often have problems keeping a steady picture.
@tiogaman1

So dont use it because you dont know how to use it?
@TheMediaNerdMT
@TheMediaNerdMT 5 месяцев назад
If you want to use them, then learn how before putting your old film in them. However, I am and always will be against using these machines since you can now transfer your film using digitizers like Kodak Reels. If you end up destroying your film using a projector, then they will never be able to get transferred and that would stink.

I fail to see why 8mm is bad. Just keep any projector in good condition, test it before you run a film. Get it serviced before hand if need be.

My channel is for legacy purposes to teach people how to transfer media. The videos I make are totally unselfish. Obviously, you have not watched any of my other videos to understand that what I do is to help people. Media transfer companies are not going to be around forever and the people that subscribe to my channel appreciate what I teach them so they can do it themselves. I think that you may need to think about your comment, it is nothing but hateful, thoughtless and misguided.
