Good points, but, cleaning, oil, and a little google research go a long way. This also isnt brain surgery. I would say, get in there and learn, just start with expendable film first.
There is another video on RU-vid that compared this same issue on the Wolverine, a couple of years ago. The concensus was the same as yours. The difference is negligible.
I'm not that smart. I'm on a PC. I have micro cassettes and the recorder. But the confusion is 1. Do I need master avcap? 2. Do I also need Audacity? What are the basic steps for a pc user? I cannot find a good video anywhere for my learning style. Like a bullet point for a pc lol sorry! Why do I need a DVD maker? I don't want to make a dvd. I want to make digital audio files from my vintage micro cassettes. Thank you for any help you can offer! This is the recorder I have to use: ge model no. 3-5377a
2:05 there are significant differences between the scans. The Kodak seemed to have a slight edge enhancement present but this might have simply been due to the increased noise from the high resolution punishing the compression algorithm (Either at scan time or from RU-vid). The Wolverine did not present as much noise but at the cost of some detail.
Terrific Video - thank you. As an FYI - I ended up buying the USB 2.0 Video Grabber (I have Windows 11). That USB audio/video was less than $20 via Amazon (vs. the $50 for the recommended I-O Data USB ) - they worked without issue (No separate driver download - Windows supported them).
Hello Mark … if I sent you an audio cassette would you transfer and provide the transferred audio to me and would I be able to upload to RU-vid to share with others? Cost?
Great video. I can't get past the error message "please connect the power supply" when trying to record. PS is connected of course. Other times it outputs "please recheck film's place" on the same moment. The unit "preview" works fine. It is just when it tries to record.
You are going to have to do a google search to see who develops film unless you can get a developing kit off of amazon. Once that you have it developed, you can use a transfer machine like the Kodak Reels. I do like the Kodak Reels over the other 8mm transfer machines. However, if you are shooting super8 with sound, you won't be able to use the Kodak Reels. You can check out my video on the Kodak Reels to see what you think. Best of luck and keep me posted! In 1986 I had a Panasonic VCR that could record anything !! Macrovision or not. I could copy any movie I wanted to !! Of course back then VCRS still cost nearly $ 400 dollars :)
@@TheMediaNerdMT Yes they tend to chew the film up. Sometimes you can't remove the film from the machine with out breaking it. If it is a magnetic sound film they are very tricky to splice. You can't cover the stripe with tape
In the late 70s early 80s, I was the kid that always volunteered to run the projector in elementary school. I loved loading the film. I think my career choice was planned way back then!!!
@@TheMediaNerdMT Me too !!! I just turned 60 years old and I have a massive amount of movie projectors and films !! 16mm sound and silent, super 8mm sound and silent and standard 8mm sound and silent
That's cool. I have a few 8mm projectors along with a ton of old video cameras (8mm and vhs). When people bring me there media to transfer, they sometimes give me there old cameras instead of throwing them away. I really don't have any idea what to do with the stuff, I just put it all in storage. I am not a packrat but I hate to throw that stuff away for some reason. Good talking with you!
I understand it is your business to convert film but you are leaving out the experience of viewing as people did in the 1950’s etc and watching reels with friends and family. It’s the cool, history factor that makes it fun and amazing to those who never experienced it I collect Bolex and other cameras and projectors and with a bit of know how from RU-vid, this is a fun and unique experience in this digital age
I do remember the days my father would pull out the slide projector and screen to view photos. He never shot on 8mm film. It was a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, the projectors being sold on eBay, thrift stores and garage sales are not refurbished. They are sold as is and for some reason, people just think they will work just fine and then the family film gets destroyed. It's sad and I have heard of this from time and time again over the past 20+ years.
Have changed it from 48 khz to 44.1. I thought it had worked but no syncing. Could it be a problem on vhs or some other setting? Thanks for all the help
1. Don't touch the heads with fingers the oil will damage them 2. Don't touch the heads with a cue tip the fibres will tangle on the heads leading to problems also. 3.don't squirt a duster since the dust will get inside the drum heads. With patience pick up the dust with a cue tip and 99.9% iso propyl alcohol. Use a folded piece of paper to clean the head drum - plenty videos showing this. Cleaning a vcr requires patience and there's no simple way to do it properly without damaging it.
This is very helpful. my case is slightly different as the Tape ripped in the middle rather than slipped off. I assume I can use the plastic tape to fix this, but which side would i apply the tape to, the top or bottom? thanks!
You could carefully try and use QTips. The fibers of the QTips could get caught on the head. So you have to be very cautious or you’ll ruin the head. If I were you, I’d just get the swabs.
I just bought that exact model and came in today. wooohooo! Do you which cables I need to transfer videos from camcorder to 2020 Macbook Pro with USB C port?
Sorry to hear that. There wasn't protective plastic that you might have missed unpackaging? Did you try multiple reels? Did you do a factory reset? If it doesn't work, send it back for a new one.
My vhs came out the player with the tape sticking out of the case a little bit. I got it back in by opening the lid of the case and using the edge of my finger to slip the tape back in, but I’m paranoid if me touching it like that has damaged it
On the side of the VHS housing is a little button close to the lid on the side. You press that in to release the lid. On the bottom of the tape there is a hole in the back middle. Use a pen to press the little flap down which releases the gears to the spools. You can then manually wind your tape back safely. To answer your question about damage, I doubt it. Tapes are tough, you may get a little static from the part that got creased or some kind of blur from maybe getting finger oil on it but you should be ok.
I've been currently transferring hi8 tapes and theres atleast 3 tapes so far that needs to be repaired.. Will I lose footage by doing this method? I really dont want to risk messing up my tape further more or destroying the camcorder I just bought. These tapes are really special to me and I want it transferred. Please help 😭
you will loose a little bit of footage when you do the splice. Just make sure to make the splice tape as thin as possible so it goes through the machine properly.
@@TheMediaNerdMT I might just have the few tapes I weren't able to get working from your website. Is it additional cost if I want my tapes transferred on a flash drive rather than having it spliced?

I saw a video showing to NOT zoom with the Wolverine and do the crop later in post editing. This makes a huge difference. The video with the digital zoom of the converter is riddled with compression artifacts. The video with no zoom is virtually artifact free.
I did a zoom comparison using the Kodak reels which will come out next week. Subscribe so you can check it out. I will do a zoom comparison with the Wolverine to see how that does. Thanks for your comment and watching!
The colors are absolutely unstable and sometimes unreal from one scene to another. After countless tests I gave up and returned to my Wolverine pro, which has stable colors throughout the whole film. With reduced tint, it improved but the effect still remains. -For instance a gray background of a title scene becomes red when it`s after a previous scene with a nature take or other. I `m hoping, that Kodak cares about this and provides an update of the firmware (I have 2.0 American version). With this issue being solved, I like the features of the Kodak Reels and I would take it back from the junk room.
Thanks for the answer! and I apologize for my comment. I have made another attempt with the following settings: Exposure:-0.5, Sharpness: -1.5, Tint: -1.5. The colors are much more realistic. Redshift after extreme green scenes no longer exists. Kodak Reels comes back to service, with it`s nice stable scanning!
Great video. You helped me save a 45 year old, 3 hour long VHS video of my family's birthday's christenings, parties and other occasions which included many relatives that have since passed. Many, many thanks. 😃👍
The USB is for an alternate power source. You can plug it into your computer for power or if you have a USB wall adapter, you can plug it in that way for power.
I use my Mac and Final Cut Pro 7. The video is captured using Firewire. Once it is captured, it is a .mov file which is extremely large. I then put it through wondershare converter to make it a mp4 file. It reduces the size significantly while maintaining a good image.
I actually inherited a Bell and Howell from the late 50’s that is in pristine, and I mean PRISTINE condition! It had everything from the purchase tag on the case, to a still half full small tin container with “Projector Oil”! I tried it with a junk reel, and it works perfect!
This seems a lot easier than the elgato crap which i have just sent back today, with elgato if your pc is not bang up to date with everything it will not work, and trying to download the driver was impossible, i will def be giving this a whirl.
