8x8 Basic Micro Cabin - One Weekend Build!

Here's our basic micro cabin build! We started out with an 8x8 deck (which we already had built, but figured we could use that as a base) and finished the weekend with a basic micro cabin that will absolutely meet our needs for camping and staying on the creek! We call it "The Bunker" because we're going to use army cots for sleeping, plus it's a shout out to the military because Cornbread and several of Cupcake's sons have served/are serving in the U.S. military.
We give you a cost break down of the total project at the end of the video and I have to say we were a little surprised. Our goal was less than $1000 but we ended up going over (but only because of the current levels of inflation - we compared our cost for materials to our last build and the materials were substantially less). Even with the increased cost we're still very happy with the build and think it could be a good option for many people as a basic micro cabin that is easy to build and will provide shelter on your own little piece of heaven.
We get a lot of inspiration from many youtubers like ‪@therealgirlinthewoods‬ , ‪@Bushradical‬ , ‪@relaxshacksDOTcom‬ , ‪@WoodnessGoodness‬ and more. ‪@therealgirlinthewoods‬ recently built an A Frame, and we think that's going to be our next project. We have a lot of room on our creek and we love being here, so why not make it as comfortable as possible?! ‪@WoodnessGoodness‬ is currently working on a basic cabin build (with the intention of selling it and having it moved), and that has given us a few ideas, as well.
We hope you enjoy the video - let us know if you have any comments or questions and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you're interested in following us on our adventures! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Thx for the comment! We were just going for a very basic micro cabin that we could build easily (and inexpensively). It's perfect for what we wanted to do. If we ever get a chance to build our dream tiny home it will probably be about 12x20 (if it's up to me, though Cupcake would like something a little bigger, about a 20x30).

I thought this would be a really great idea for a green house .

It has plenty of light coming in through the corrugated plastic, but it's just one wall. If that wall was facing south, I think it would work great!

Nice work! I can't wait to see the next video with the deck. I'm also curious how you plan to fill the gaps to make it a bit more weather proof. Keep up the great work. Cheers! Bill

Good question! We're continuing to work on that part of it (without increasing the cost too much)!

Thanks! We're almost done with our Elevated Cabin Build - video for that coming soon! It's so enjoyable (and educational) to do a build yourself!

Built what started as an 8x8 deer shooting house on a 4 foot high platform that turned into small cabin on my 23 acre plot of land here in Alabama. I think my spending was similar. It's funny, I used fence pickets, too, but that's on the inside walls. I used plytanium exterior siding and build the roof as a gable with corrugated plastic panels. Looks like you used 2x3 studs as did I. Lumber prices are rather high still.

Ours is basic, but we like it. Cupcake had family here recently and her sister/her husband slept in it for almost a week and loved it. We're wanting to build a larger cabin pretty soon, but lumber has to come down first.

I like your tent idea. I just wonder if you could put a tarp on it just for the rain?

And after a few beers, measure 8x cut once! And write it down each time and compare notes. And check with the helper.

The cabin is in southern Tennessee - we have a small piece of unrestricted property and built an outdoor kitchen, the micro cabin, and we recently moved into our elevated cabin (also small, just 256 square feet). We love it and we're glad we have this as our go-to place when we're not traveling in our cargo trailer (and we're heading out for a few months in it in just a few weeks)!

That's all treated wood it must be way cheaper in the States or you are rich. Bush Radical would have made a solid foundation. He also would have done 16-inch centers on every wall and a steeper pitch on the roof, your header for the window should be 2x8 or 2 x 10. He also would have staggered the boards on the outside for strength. side walls should be 2x6 not 2x3 roof rafters should be 2x8 or 2 x 10 for that style of roof, I would have done 2x12. What scared me is people watch these videos and think that's easy I can do it myself... This is the third most unsafe building I have seen on RU-vid since 2005 and trust me, yours is much better than the first 2 death traps I saw. The comment below - says good job thumbs up, that's what worries me! That plastic will rattle and be loud when you try and sleep but if it's not meant to keep you warm, just dry and cut down the wind, it should kind of work. The building lacks strength so I don't imagine it will last too many years, the first good storm or heavy snowfall will take it away. The next time you watch one of Dave's videos from Bush Radical please take notes, you'll learn a lot and you are welcome!

We're using this little building for storage now and it's holding up well. We don't get too much snow in Tennessee, so no worries there. We've built a 320 square foot cabin with a wrap around porch, 8 feet up on posts about 50 feet away from the micro cabin - it's holding up well! We love @bushradical and @therealgirlinthewoods! They've both given us a lot of inspiration over the years!
