On 9/11, Anthoula Katsimatides was 29 years old, working for then-New York Governor George Pataki’s community affairs department . Because there was an event the night before, Katsimatides was allowed to report to work later in the morning. A phone call from a cousin in Greece awakened her, asking where Anthoula was and if she was ok. Confused by the questions, her cousin directed her to turn on the tv. That’s when she learned about the attack on The World Trade Center. Her 31 year old brother worked for Cantor Fitzgerald but Anthoula didn’t know he worked at The World Trade Center. She had no idea his office was 2 to 6 floors above where the plane hit the tower. All she knew was John worked on Wall Street, a nickname for Lower Manhattan. It was a phone call from another brother, George, that alerted Anthoula that John was in one of the twin towers.
The large Greek family gathered in Queens at her parents’ home. They all held out hope that John would make it out . Another brother had died just a year ago. It couldn’t happen again. For a full month, the family refused to give up. Maybe John had amnesia and was wandering the streets. A call came from a man identifying himself as John’s doctor. Anthoula cried out, “Where is he?” The doctor apologized, explaining he had been treating John for his cancer. It was totally treatable but after the family lost another brother, John didn’t want to worry them, instead leaning on friends for support. The doctor told Anthoula John was such a joy, making the terminally ill patients laugh. When they lost Michael the year before, John told Anthoula to stop wearing black, that she should dress in colors and enjoy her life. Anthoula never wore black for John. She wore red and pink, as he instructed, as she did when this video was taped.

As a Greek American, I chose this video as soon as I saw her name. It's hard to hear this tragedy happen in the exact same way it would within my own family, just too real. Hearing about him and who he was, I'm sure John was a huge comfort to his colleagues on that day. Him deliberately working hard jobs before accepting an easier one is amazing and just tells you the kind of guy he must have been. I'm so sorry for your loss.

No mention of either one calling family when this unfolded. Obviously they were blown up or hit with laser attacks, burned from inside out to ashes- Trump did that to people in Paradise, CA. He purchased tons of laser weapons 5 months before the Paradise, CA attack.

I too chose to click on the video because i recognized her name as Greek. I was living in Athens, Greece back then. I had just given birth 2 months earlier & was on my way to the gym so, Greek time 3.10pm. once i had changed & got on the treadmill I thought the Empire State building was on fire, I was alone in the room of treadmills as it was siesta time, i then saw the second plane, I originally thought it was say, ABC news getting a better look at the fire, then that one hit the second tower, OMG, I hit the Stop button & said to myself "This is war". I thought of my new born baby boys & thought what a world they have been born into. I drove straight back home. The nanny & my mother in law were glued to the TV. My precious boys were asleep. My husband had flown to Germany that morning I told him please don't fly back, drive & take the Superfast Ferry to Patras. What a day. My heart goes out to Ms. Katsimatides, she lost one brother a year earlier then another. My Goodness. Bless her & her strong family.

It's Sept 2023 and I'm watching videos of 911 stories for the month of September to honor and remember all who were effected on 911. Personally, I knew no one who suffered from the 911 tragedy. Listening to these stories have brought me to tears. I have learned many new details that have given me a better understanding of the events of 911. Prior to these stories, the only victim's name and story I remembered was that of Tod Beamer due to the news media coverage. Thanks to these 911 stories, I know a lot more names but most importantly, I now know their stories. It's important to me to remember and never forget the people of 911.

Same here. I knew nobody who was affected, and only heard a few stories here and there. I have now listened to dozens of stories and learn something new with every story, things I just never thought of. I am really very grateful for these stories being available now, and how that day affected people from every walk of life. It’s so important for the rest of the world to learn about the people who perished, were injured, and are affected by the horrors to this day. Thank you!

Thank you for articulating your continued grief. I was living in Japan on September 11. My 14 year old brother was a freshman in high school. By January he was in a medically induced coma. For no understandable reason, my beautiful brother died on February 22, 2002. At the time, I felt like he had given up on the world because of 9/11. Now I just think of all those things I never got to experience with him... his high school graduation, college, marriage, children. I think of who he would have become. His death fractured our family in many ways. In my mind, 9/11 and Scotty's death are forever entwined. God bless you and yours Anthoula.

For some, actually quite a lot of people, talking about it is the way to grieve. Hugs to her and her family and friends. When my fiance died from a drunk driver I got through it by talking about it, for years, even did presentations in college about it. What she and others are doing is spreading awareness and even the message of kindness and living for today.

Here where I live in Louisiana I remember leaving the house that evening after spending the day watching this on television. I lived then in a country area of North Louisiana and to get into town we had to drive about 30 miles. There was very little traffic on the highway. It was still daylight but as I got to the city I saw the Airforce Base entrance had concrete barricades confining entrance onto the base to one narrow lane just wide enough for nothing larger than a pickup truck to drive through. The streets were like in a small country town after dark. No more than half a dozen cars were out in every part of the city. And at least a third of those were law enforcement. I went to my usual hangout, walked in and there were about three dozen people all silent. No music or anyone shooting pool or darts. One man bought a bottle of Kentucky bourbon from the bar owner at what had been the owners cost. It was passed around and we all sipped as though paying respect to a dead loved one. And in fact a loved one had died. The innocence of even the roughest old bikers in there that night died. Till that day there was one small spark of blissful ignorance we had been allowed to hold on to. A nice little dream we all shared. That was the day that woke us up. I do remember. I will remember. I shall never forget that day. The day I got grown. 🇺🇸

@@sidneyh11 Hello Becky. You may not wish to respond to this but I'm going to say it anyway. When I wrote the comment you responded to, my country and the world weren't having to deal with the murder of countless innocent people from numerous countries who are dead because the murderer joe biden left them to die. As far as I'm concerned there's not one democrat on the planet that's of the human species. They're even less than animals. The nearest comparison I can make is to the botfly maggot. And as frosting on their cake the maggot joe biden gave its communist, socialist, marxist, Nazi, democrat party the lives of 13 of our brave and honorable young Marines. Many are saying the sorry old idiot has shamed America. Well I'm not ashamed. I'm mad as hell. There are many other things I have crowded into my brain-box now but I won't dump them on you. I'll simply say thank you for the kind words and God bless.

I am HORRIFIED that anyone would mess with the heads of victim’s families by giving them false hope. What sick person would report finding a wallet of someone lost in the tragedy? That makes me angry that some people were so disgustingly insensitive. She’s a beautiful woman. I am so sorry for her loss. As a fellow New Yorker, I remember the tragedy and aftermath very clearly. I equate everything in my own life as being before 9/11 or after 9/11. I fortunately didn’t lose anyone that I was close to, but I do know several people who suffered because they lost close relatives, or spouses or their friends. Our lives were in total upheaval. I lost my job. After 9/11 i I was not sure of what to do next, or where to turn. I ended up leaving NYC in November and spent the winter out on the West coast just to get away from it all. The aftermath here in the city was totally overwhelming and traumatizing. The fires were still burning at Ground Zero even months later. The air quality was toxically dangerous. Everyone had a 9/11 cough. Mine went away as soon as I got out to California. That was a relief but it was also disturbing. Almost everyone in the NYC area was coughing and hacking as if we were all smokers with 3 pack a day habits for a long time after September 11th, 2001. Even though the officials declared that the air was safe, it was obvious that we all should not have been coughing for so long . All of us were affected to varying degrees. It did bring residents of NYC closer together in solidarity and it is something that has been hard to get over and fully understand. I don’t know that I will ever fully recover from 9/11 and it’s been 21 years now. My heart goes out to this lovely woman who lost 2 brothers in such close succession. Wishing her and her family all the best. John was almost exactly my age and I can tell that he was a really wonderful guy who will continue to remain with them in spirit forever.

Aw, hon. I'm so sorry for your loss. I've watched several 9/11 stories videos, but there is something about your video that touched me in a very special and very different way. It was hard to pinpoint at first, but then I realized what made your video stand out to me. It was the love. The love when you spoke about your brother and the uncertainty you and your family felt about whether your brother was ok. It was like the love you all have not only for your brother, but, for each other, just look on a life of its own in the video. How beautiful is that? How beautiful to know that, no matter WHAT happens, to know you have your family there with this whole circle of love who are there for you and will be there for you. That doesn't exist in every family. It certainly didn't and doesn't in mine. I have my daughter, and I was close to my mother who has passed on, but, much of the rest of my family has literally been the family from hell. Just constant backstabbing, jealousy, undermining and every other negative emotion you can hold for a family member for as long as I can remember. I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story. Please hug your family members for me. God bless. 💕

That Monday night worked overtime at the metropolitan museum of art, it poured down rain. Tuesday morning was a cloudless day and as I drove across the George Washington Bridge seeing the first tower with smoke pouring out I thought how will they put out that fire? Got to the building where I was rebuilding an elevator and immediately went out on the roof at which point both buildings were burning. When the first building collapsed seeing the dust cloud I thought great their putting the fire out. Then the dust somewhat cleared and the towers were gone. In the following weeks there was a comradary in the city that will probably never happen again. God bless you and your family

My prayers are with you and your family. It is remarkable that all of our lives have been impacted by such a cowardly act. It really is inconceivable that one would be willing to hurt innocent people and children like that. There is a special place that these bastards will have in the afterlife and it sure ain’t with virgins.

Your brother’s soul isn’t tied to the WTC. He’s somewhere, flying free as a bird. I’m not a religious person at all, having buried our second son, who left us after only 39 days. But I don’t need a God to believe in. I believe in love, in freedom, in joy; living each day qs if it were the last we might experience . Those terrorists took so much from people, but they gifted us the knowledge that life is finite, is precious, is to be lived to the full. That knowledge is priceless,as it was bought by so many special people, paying the ultimate price. We all have a duty to live as fully and as kindly as we possibly can.❤

Anthoula, I have watched countless 9/11 stories, and yours is one of the most heartfelt and meaningful. And few of the stories I've heard have been so relatable to me as yours. I lost my brother Rob at too young of an age, as well (not on 9/11, but to a brain bleed in his case, not long after 9/11) so i can relate to this kind of loss. My brother, too, was, 31 when he passed!!! When it got to that part and you said his age, I got the chills, because I was already in the process of writing this comment! One thing I will remind you is that they are still alive on the other side watching over us, hoping we'll make them proud by living our lives to the fullest in their honor and memory, and never forget them. As we say: this life is but a vapor. And it goes by so quickly. It won't be long 'til we see our bothers again, Anthoula! Make him proud and be exactly you. Continue to not only share your story but to share about him with friends, family and everyone around you and keep his memory alive. I, too, have taken on my brother Rob's personality traits. I was much more uptight and insecure when he was alive, and he was the "badass" in the family. I've become a lot more laid back and confident, because of him. And I believe it's because he's watching over me and living through me in my heart, so to speak. I know my brother Rob is always with me. I see signs of that all the time. And I know I WILL see him again. I just wanted to write and tell you that John is always with you and you WILL DEFINITELY see him again. May God bless and be close with you, John and your family.

In all these stories someone calls someone and says “turn on the television”. Very few laptops, no tablets, smartphones, Twitter, texting, WhatsApp, Instagram. So news was word of mouth or cell phone. Thank goodness we never saw livestream deaths and suffering from inside the towers or planes. Yet we thought we were in a new era after 1996 with the more accessible Internet which still in 2001 was incredibly basic. Life WAS simpler then and felt different

I am Italian and married a Greek American. I converted to Greek Orthodox when we married almost 35 years ago. Our beautiful Church St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church was destroyed that day as the towers came down it shook the foundation and leveled our beautiful church over a hundred years old . Im so so sorry about your brother John . Our Faith is what keeps us going. John is at rest and with Jesus and you will see him again when Jesus comes again and judges us all. Thank God for FAMILY and FAITH AND THE BELIEF IN THE RESSURECTION . I lost my kid brother suddenly when he was 22 yrs old. We were so close and niow its 26 yrs later and I agree with you its harder . I can't imagine that pain of not having the body or the experience of a public death . John is with you sweetheart and you will be reunited with him ❤. MAY JOHNS MEMORY BE ETERNAL ❤

It feels like yesterday. It was 2pm our time in South Africa & when I saw what was happening on tv I thought it was a horror movie. Until today it brings immense pain to think that such deranged evil could shatter so many innocent lives forever. Am so deeply heartbroken for all of you even though no ties but may all those beautiful souls RIP forever 😢💔🙏😭🙏

It's interesting, I can TOTALLY relate to her -- I lived in Brooklyn, worked (at the time) in the Greenwich Village & Upper West Side areas, and also was in grad school down in the Greenwich Village/Washington Square Park neighborhood as well. And I really NEVER frequented downtown or right by the WTC anyhow. Although, the Subway line I'd ride passed RIGHT UNDER the towers. So, when she talks about: "What's happening to my city? What's happening in the world?" I DEFINITELY went through that on 9/11 ALL DAY LONG. I could see the smoke from where I was out in Brooklyn, and it was UTTERLY SURREAL. A childhood friend of mine (who had since moved from Brooklyn out to Staten Island) worked for Merrill Lynch across the street from the WTC, and it was a HUGE whoosh of relief when I finally got to talk to her.
