It's the hymn of the reformation. It's based on Psalm 46 and this, the 9/11 attacks, was definately a time of tremendous trouble and Psalm 46 says "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble..."
God's word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes who fear it, for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wretched away, they cannot win the day. The Kingdom's ours forever!
One of the most powerful hymns (if not the most powerful) in the Christian world, composed by Martin Luther, sung in a Catholic cathedral for a service in remembrance of 9/11 with 5 presidents in attendance, simply wow.
It's so beautiful seeing American presidents (Republicans and Democrats) united together singing this wonderful and marvelously anthem, wrote by the own Martin Luther. I see this how a great form of America appreciates his Protestant heritage and culture. I'm a Brazilian Protestant, but I love the United States of America and your Protestant heritage and this video made my heart so happy and merry. God bless America! God bless all world Protestants! Glory to God in the highs, and peace on earth among the men who love him! A Mighty fortress is our God ❤ 💕💖
A mighty Fortress is our God A Bulwark never failing Our Helper He amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe His craft and power are great And armed with cruel and hate On earth is not his equal Did we in our own strength confide Our striving would be losing We're not the right Man on our side The Man of God's own choosing Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He Lord Sabaoth His Name From age to age, the same And He must win the battle That word above all earthly powers No, thanks to them, abideth The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through Him who with us sideth Let goods and kindred go This mortal life also The body they may kill God's truth abideth still His Kingdom is forever
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (February 22), I played this for Sunday School Assembly. I did so for 2 reasons: Today is The First Sunday in Lent and our Sunday School Lesson today was from Ephesians 6: 10-20.
Well, this is an Episcopal (Anglican) Cathedral, not of Roman Catholic. For Lutheranism, even all the Scandinavian Lutheran churches are maintaining historical episcopate since Reformation, together with Masses, vestments, smoke and bells, etc. And I don't think there are any problems for Martin Luther about the church building called "cathedral" also.
@@bwilliamleo7872 Actually, the Roman Catholics have taken to singing many beautiful Anglican hymns at services. Although many beautiful pieces of service music were written for the RC church, hymnody disappeared in the 18th and 19th centuries in favor of Gregorian chant. They are back to hymn singing. A nice change I think!
To think of all who came back to God through the 9/11 incident , now this country turned it's back on The Lord again... A shame , Revive This Nation Lord
A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing: Our helper He, amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work his woe; His craft and power are great, And armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth is his name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle. And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim,- We tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, For lo! His doom is sure,- One little word shall fell him. That word above all earthly powers- No thanks to them-abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also: The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still, His kingdom is for ever.
Thank You for posting tho off by a few seconds This Hymn of all time is still most cherished by Christians around the Globe. To all who believe in HIM no more needs to be said To those who doubt HIM, pity and prayers As for me and mine we will serve the Lord Pax+
John Sluder you’re a complete moron. Schumer and others of Jewish faith can be seen singing. Scripture says everything is possible w God. Live in true brotherhood and worry about yourself not anyone else.
That was heartbreaking. I think he said "I can't sing" His pain is so visceral and tells the story of that horrendous day. We will never forget. God bless these families who lost their loved ones and God Bless America
Psalm 46 King James Version 46 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah
they are singing the old words here, I learned this under both the early "A Bulwark never Failing" and the more commonly used "A Sword and Shield Victorious" lyrics (the latter of which are sourced to the Green Covet Lutheran Book of Worship hymnal.).
This Hodge translation is horrible. It's a shame most protestants use it, even though hodge was a Unitarian. It's difficult to call his wording "older" though a as the translations that Lutherans use are closer to the original German--which is older than Hodge's mess.
Back when people could come together and sing “A Mighty Fortress” as a candle in a tunnel of darkness. There was no “woke or cancel culture”to raise an objection to the singing of this wonderful Martin Luther hymn. We need to get to back to an America that embraces these words of Martin Luther, even though there are plenty of people who would object. The answer lies in the voices heard at the polls in 2022 and 2024.
I love this old fashioned hymn very well and I’m a strong conservative Biblical Christian that’s neutral on politics and everything this world have to offer at the moment. However, I stand strongly with what the Bible have to say till Christ returns and takes us born again Christians with him in the clouds aka the rapture. Jesus Christ is Lord forevermore and God bless conservative Christian USA 🇺🇸 along with our conservative Christian worldview as well.
I only wish the video matched the audio. Not much fixing that from my VCR recording of it that day. Sadly, I've searched everywhere for the actual recording of this mass and there is NOTHING out there.

A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; he breaks the cruel oppressor's rod and wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might he arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal. [No strength of ours could match his might! We would he lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is he! Christ Jesus mighty Lord, God's only Son, adored, he holds the field victorious.] Though hoardes of devils fill the land all threat'ning to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; they cannot overpow'r us. Let this world's tyrant rage, in battle we'll engage! His might is doomed to fail, God's judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him. God's word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The Kingdom's ours forever. --a far more accurate translation of Luther's hymn. I'm really quite surprised that Episcopalians use the butchered version rendered by Hedge. Lutherans never use his translation!
wow, look at all those masons gathering together in that medieval pagan church. notice the huge picture of Ichthus or Christos symbolically coming out of the womb of "the great mother". This 15th century ritual is a battle cry for a holy war within Christiandom itself. no one in that audience even knows the words to the song they are singing, lol.
This is an Anglican cathedral, btw. Not Roman Catholic. Though I doubt there's any objection to the hymn among Roman Catholics--i just hope they would use a better translation like the Lutherans do.
@@Juan-qu4oj I have heard it sung in Catholic, Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, and others. It’s a great song. Some people complained that Luther used beer drinking songs as a base for his music. Luther said it wasn’t right for the devil to have all the best songs
Matthew 17:11. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elijah truly shall FIRST COME, and RESTORE all things. God has fulfilled the above scripture in THIS DAY. God stated in His word that God would send a prophet in the “Last days” to “Restore” the original understanding of the word of God, which the Apostles had. We are now living in the last days, God has kept His word and sent that prophet, thereby “Restoring” His word to His Bride. God has raised the dead on FIVE occasions through His chosen vessel. God was photographed SIX times, (Veiled in the form of the Pillar of Fire) with His prophet. God`s chosen vessel was William Marrion Branham. Judgement is coming to America, do you wonder why ? One Sunday morning in June, 1933, God gave seven major continuous visions to His prophet William Marrion Branham (Fulfilling Malachi 4:5 + Matthew 17:11 + Revelation 10:7 and other scriptures) Five of the seven continuous visions, have already come to pass. SEVENTH VISION. “The last and seventh vision was wherein I heard a most terrible explosion. As I turned to look I saw nothing but debris, craters, and smoke all over the land of America.” Judgement is coming to America, do you wonder why ? Check out William Branham, God`s “Vindicated Prophet” for the End Time. God raised the dead FIVE times through this ministry. The GREAT PILLAR OF FIRE was photographed SIX times with His Prophet. One “True Prophet” when there are many “False Prophets.” These and other “Prophetical scriptures” fulfilled: Malachi 4:5. Matthew 17:11. Revelation 10:7. Revelation 3:14. Revelation 1:16 - 20. Revelation 2:1. Revelation 3:1. Visit: www.end-time-message.org/home
Why is Chuck Schumer there… he’s a Jew. And get a load of all the Jews in the audience standing with straight face is not even singing or being respectful.
