I am not a karate practitioner, but my best advice would be to go visit all the martial arts schools in your area and see which one seems to offer the best curriculum, service, and most welcoming atmosphere. Of course, in most cases with combinations it's not the first strike that will land. The opponent will block, which will create an opening for the other strikes. No technique is perfect, there is always a way to counter, so it comes down to which opponent has the best skills.
