I wanted to become a marine biologist as a kid. When I realized I lacked scientific and mathematical aptitude, I turned to reefkeeping instead. And I can tell you my Clownfish would be too sad to see me leave and study the bigger ocean.
Hey it's definitely not for everyone, being a marine biologist is definitely way harder than it seems! Reefkeeping honestly sounds just as exciting and I love your connection to your Clownfish hahaha. I've been considering getting into it myself!
I've always wanted to pursue marine photography as a career. The ocean has always mystified me. I've seen how beautiful it is and also i know how terrifying and unpredictable it is, and i want to experience it myself.
Luckily, marine photography is something you can always start yourself! All you need is a camera 😜. But i agree, it’s people like Paul Nicklen that started my love for marine biology and the incredible things you can do in this field.
:) Glad you share a love of the ocean. For me there’s really no other way to cultivate an intimate relationship with the ocean than to take care of a small piece of it on a daily basis. That’s why I have decided to become a reef tank hobbyist. You may swim with fish and ocean animals while diving or snorkeling or doing research on them up close, but none is as magical as having them live for years, even decades under none other than your own care and regard for their environment. I am deeply upset that there are activist groups trying to end the saltwater hobby. If possible I would only buy Captive bred fish and corals (which unfortunately is far from a reality currently, save for a select number of species), but ending the saltwater hobby altogether would mean losing a vital source of inspiration for future generations in their appreciation of God’s design when He created the oceans of the world. Not to mention with the rate that our coral reefs are dying due to global warming, some species may only exist in captivity as a result of captive breeding efforts a few decades down the line. We may even assist marine biologists by growing corals and raising fish to give back to the oceans (of course we’ll keep some to ourselves in our tanks :)). We can be the staunchest allies of marine biologists and I really believe that even the marine biologist experience is not complete without getting into the hobby side of things. :) My deepest disrespect for these brain dead conservation groups and the politicians who back them unconditionally. If they really think they can act in the better interests of these beautiful and amazing marine animals, they should prove that by taking care of a reef tank. I bet 90% of them will think it’s too difficult after only a week. If they have not personally experienced what it takes to maintain such fragile ecosystems yet try to attack the people who can AKA us, they’re in no position to do what’s “best” for these animals. Same with their attitude towards cats and dogs really. I’d not hesitate to use brutal tactics to crush them if I ever become a governor or even the president. I’d treat them as a modern day KKK, domestic terrorist groups and use every tool in my playbook to track down their leaders one by one and rip their organizational abilities to shreds.
I love the ocean, I’m obsessed with all marine life, my mother and my old science teacher were both going to be marine biologists, and that made me want to be one even more. I’ve been to a marine biology summer camp for multiple years in a row, it’s amazing!!
My 9 year old wants to be a "zoo keeper who works with and trains dolphins ". To encourage her dreams i am having her do research about this. So I am pre watching videos to pass onto her... definitely going to have her watch this and others! Thank you
Why would you support marine mammals in captivity… at least watch seaspiracy on Netflix or like do research on how absolutely horrible that is for them.
What is Marine Snow? | Underwater Snowfall | Thoughtctrl DO watch full video in the link given below ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aEQxXDA7_D0.html
@@serenity9926 I graduated in Marine Bio, don't worry throught my entire 4 year course we never swam. I can swim however life jackets are a thing. so do not worry.
I’m currently a freshman in college studying marine sciences with a concentration in marine biology. I’ve wanted to be one since I was really young but didn’t know what to do for a career. Very recently, I decided to try for vet school after I graduate so I can hopefully become a marine veterinarian!
@Elyana Fowler so basically there are loads of science/sea animals books like the science of ocean and animal encyclopedia which they will give you a basic understanding or there are websites like seneca which will help you with biology and when your about 14 or if you are that age or higher then you can do 6 week trips to like Figi and the website is www.gvi.com which allows you to do courses and its open now. Just enjoying the sea maybe water sports or get maybe some diving in if you can and then at uni study biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics and then just apply for some jobs like im 12 so like i don't probably know everything but this is basically it
Great list! "Marine Biology" is definitely a buzzword which can confuse up-and-coming marine scientists. Clarification on job titles is always helpful! Mahalo!
Getting PADI Open Water Diver certified costs around $200 and involves some classwork, a few pool dives, and a few ocean dives. You need that certification to be able to go on other trips and, once you have that, you can keep going and get more certifications in more specialized areas like cave diving or ice diving, or upgrade your fundamental skills to Advanced Open Water, Rescue, Master Scuba Diver, and even further. It's really cool- you need to try it!
I'm currently an undergraduate student looking to get a masters in marine biology. I've been fascinated with this career for a long time. However, one of the biggest issues I've been worried about in pursuing this career is the whole independency thing. I've always imagined working with a team in this sort of career, but if that's not how it really works, I'm not sure if its really going to suit me since I'm really used to following instructions, a set plan, a schedule, or someone else's orders. My biggest drive in marine biology is because I want to research sharks, specifically. I want to be in the field with them, tag them, study their ecology, follow their patterns, etc.
hahaha, the only thing I'm good at is drawing but I hecking love the ocean- its my safe spot and so interesting. I have no idea what to do in life but this really clears things up, thanks!
It´is the most useful video that I have found by far!! I am a marine biology student in Peru and I'm looking for opportunities or jobs, I think I'm on time. I don't want a single job for the rest of my life! All the love from Peru. PD: Sorry for my bad English skills hehe
Thank you for this video I've been interested in marine biology since I was 7 and have kept with it you opened my eyes to many different occupations I could choose between
These are just a few. Marine Biology is a giant field, and every day I am learning of the evermore jobs that are available. Such as working on Oil rigs, marine biologists are also used in the navy, government law and regulation, medicine, photography and film. Even construction and business development to name a few more
I’m interested in studying marine biology however I’m concerned that I will be unable to find a well paying job that allows me to actually use my knowledge. Do you think the lack of job opportunity outweighs the worth in going to school for marine biology?
Thanks so much, this video was very helpful. I will be a Senior in High School this year and this past year have really been considering going into Marine Biology. I am currently interning at an aquarium and I love the experience. Yet I am still deciding exactly what career I would like to go towards, so these videos are extremely helpful for me.
I’m very thankful for this video I’ve been doing a lot of research even tho I’m only 13 and I still have A LOT of time to Decide but I think I’ve chosen one that would suit me
Omg this is amazing I'm picking my GCSEs next year and was thinking of jobs this seems amazing!!! Only thing is I live in the uk and my family is rlly broke hope I can still do it tho!! Xxxx
I'm currently having the *worst* identity crisis ever. I always wanted to be a marine biologist, I really love science but I'm not very good at math or chemistry.. still on 11th grade but very nervous about what I'm going to do after high school..
I'm in the tail end of my 3rd year of my bachelor's, and people are beginning to ask me what career I'll have, what my plan for grad school is, where I'm going to live and work (my uni is ~4500km away from home), etc. Honestly I didn't think I'd get this far cuz I *sucked* at math and chem in both high school and my 1st year so I'm lowkey freaking out lol
Congratulations on making it so far! It just goes to show that you can always improve when you’re passionate about something. I’m curious on how you’re doing now career/school wise?
Oh my gosh me too!!! Although I’m only 12 I have been in love with sharks for a long time and my passion for sharks actually came from shark movies that make sharks out to be a scary species believe it or not. The more I saw sharks as monsters the more I wanted to prove people who think they are wrong!
@@magggmae Yes! I’m just scared I won’t be good enough to pursue that since science and math are my worst subjects. But I’m really pushing myself to learn and study Biology chemistry physics geography and mathematics.
Why did you give up becoming a veterinarian? I just graduated earlier this year, but I've been thinking for a while now about going back to school to study to become a marine veterinarian because working with marine animals has always been a dream
I gave up becoming a marine veterinarian because I realized I really wasn't all that interested in animal health and medicine. I'm far more interested in ecology and environmental advocacy. Although you can definitely incorporate both of these into the life of a marine veterinary position, I didn't want those interests to come second to the primary role of animal health. The road is TOUGH for marine veterinarians, but the persistent and dedicated do succeed! Also, once you actually receive your DVM, you can do all kinds of things! Even if you don't end up finding a position to work with aquatic animals. One of the great benefits of pursuing veterinary science is that DVMs will always have a job.
@@oceanscholar You're reply was very insightful, thank you. I have a lot of thinking ahead in terms of what I'd like to do in the future, but one things for sure is that I want to work with marine life. Appreciate the work you're doing educating and informing people about marine bio as well as the careers around it :)
After graduating from with my bachelors in marketing, I thought whether or not I made the right choice. Part of me believes I made the wrong choice and should’ve gone with something involved around my interest, sea life. Looking at it now, I don’t have the scientific or mathematical knowledge to succeed in that field. But my love for sea life pushed me to be a Fishing RU-vidr. Now my knowledge from my marketing degree is helping me to improve my channel. Hoping for the best.👍🙏
I thought that I wanted to study food engineering because it involves science. But when I found out about marine biology, I think that I may change my career path.
hey! I’m 14 and I’ve been surtified in diving since I was 10. I got surtified in Belize, and I’ve been really interested in marine biology. I’m also going on a diving trip in January in Honduras acually!
I’ve been interest in Marine Veterinarian since 9th grade of high school. About to transfer to university to get masters then PHD. It’s a hard study but going to be my dream.
I've been wanting to be a marine biologist since I was 5 and I still want to be one I will go to college for it and hopefully I will become one it sounds so interesting
U are adorable. I wanted to be a marine biologist BUT I could not get past math class in college and I also have anxiety and depression and depression that keeps me from living a life with holding down a job
My main goal is dolphin trainer, I've always loved and felt a connection to dolphins, i recently swam with them in the Florida Keys! (Thats when i finally decided to make it my career!)
That's great Cecelia! Dolphins provided me with one of the most resonating experiences I've ever had swimming with them in the wild in Honduras. They deserve more awareness and protection.
Bit of disclaimer, if you actually end up going for marine Biology with a focus on marine mammals, it's is most likely that you're gonna end up being anti training/captivity and against sea world institutions. Has hapoened to a lot of people I know, mostly because of how cruel things like dolphin training can be.
Hey fellow Ocean explorer :) We're also doing a web series on the bizarre behaviors, amazing animals and fantastic features on our shores. Great to see others making content in this space! Keep it up!
Hi there! I am currently an AS student and am aspiring to become a Marine Biologist. Before getting admitted into uni I wanted to learn more about the field and take up extracurricular activities related to marine bio. Now, the problem is there are no aquariums or zoos nearby where I live where I could look for volunteering opportunities. Currently, I am just doing a Coursera Course on Large Marine Ecosystems. What kind of further ONLINE activities can I part take in and what other resources are available which will help me out in the long run? (other topics I am particularly interested in - ocean conservation and plastic pollution)
If you can, keep taking online courses; watch documentaries, RU-vid videos, etc. You can also add in books or textbooks if a certain topic interests you. See if you can join or volunteer in an organization that lets you do online work for them. You could even start something in your local area, whether it's advocacy, education, policies or mini projects. Best of luck.
Thank you for this video. I am currently in 8th grade looking forward to learning chemistry, biology and marine biology. But besides that point, thanks for this vid because i was looking for help to get a head start on finding jobs and this helped. But one question, can i be a labratory assistant and a aquatic veterinarian at the same time?
I went to Florida State University! I made a video about this titled "Life as a Marine Biology Major" if you were interested. I've been attempting to create a video about top programs for marine biology, but realized it's quite a complex subject! I'll likely post one eventually once I've done enough research.
Amazing and super helpful video! I’m really interested in the data processing part of the research technician position. Roughly what does the salary and work schedule look like?
Our fish store has a aquatic veterinarian Any fish or coral this isn’t doing too well you can bring it back for no charge and they will help it get better
Of course! I’m glad you found this information useful! Back when I was an early undergrad I wish I knew more about the hundreds of different job opportunities out there for someone interested in marine science.
Hey been trying to get more info of what exactly does a marine biologist does and what it is and this video helped me a lot because now I know that there is multiple choices for me to do but my question is what is the most common career people usually persue?
I'm glad you found it useful! I'm not entirely sure what the most common career out of these would be, but I would think that one of the most common and popular career options of the ones I mentioned would be a school teacher!
I know I wanna be a surgeon but I also want to live my life a little because I enjoy the ocean...which major will allow me to swim with sea life the most in college???
This is very useful to me because I want a job in which I can have fun with animals and then when my brother was watching a movie, O heard about maine biology
Loved the video. But i wanna know whether i will get a job as a marine biologist after pursuing Msc in marine biology?? Or I'll have to complete my specialisation course in the same?
I'm from Sri Lanka. And I want be a Marien Biologist .Therefore what I do for achieve it and enter to Ocean University .Also I complicated my G.C.E. A/L in Sri Lanka. Please give me help for it.And your video is amazing ❤❤
im DYING to study something related to the ocean ive been obsessed with it since i was little after watching octonauts and Spongebob and jaws 🥹🥹 i love biology and literally anything related to marine life 🐳🦈
Me too I have been lost for a while as to what I want to do but I really feel this is for me, I love fish, the ocean, the mystery of it and the fact there are always new species to be discovered!
I wish I could tell you I have a number but I definitely don’t have one! The role “marine scientist” is so broad and encompasses so many roles at so many different types of organizations. Some work 50+ hours a week and some work way less. It does seem however that for smaller organizations in developing countries without a whole lot of regulation on overtime, that those types of jobs tend to push closer to 50+. Although, some people don’t mind that because they love the lifestyle.
Are the job opportunities for marine biology good or you have to get a PhD to get the good jobs because when I was a kid I always wanted to take care of sea animals. But, now I don’t know. I’m trying to protect my financial state for the future and I’m not the type to take risk just because it’s my dream.
I don’t know how much this helps, but from what I gather a PhD means that you will be leading the research projects, a master degree means you will usually be a leader within the project, and a bachelors degree can get you to be the worker within the project (salaries vary depending on degree, job, and location) I know it is a very competitive field with more people competing for jobs than jobs. If you are truly passionate, I’m confidant you’ll find a field that’s right for you. Hope this helped a little!
I've always like studying about different animals in the ocean, but never got the chance to actually do Hands on like seeing dolphins and holding other animals
Thank you so much! Do you have college suggestions for someone looking to do Wildlife and Fisheries? I’m in the middle of Nebraska, not too fantastic for marine biology
I'm not entirely certain what I might suggest for Wildlife & Fisheries, but I would do a search for the top programs for biology and environmental science!
Hi There! Huge fan great vid but.. I have a question and I really need an answer because I want to become a marine biologist but want to work in the ocean which one do you recommend for me?
I was always intrested in zoology and marine biology but had to get my graduation in computer science Fuck i hate it. Wish i could switch the profession no matter how dangerous ocean would be. I always had a dream of swimming with bowhead whales.
Hey sir I have a question I want to get into marine biology but I'm still nit sure where I want to do marine research and their making us pick career paths next year any advice?
what gcses would i have to get and what a-levels would i need to take a get to be able to get into a university that does marine biology, do i need 9 or can i still be a marine biologist with 6 and 7s im 14 and just started my gcses and idk what i need to be able to peruse marine biology
You might be surprised to know some marine biologists don't ever step foot in the water! Many marine biologists work strictly from their computer or the lab.
Hey Eli, how could I I get in touch with you ? I awfully need an honest advice in this field I am oceanography student, 27 yo, fond of diving, i am licensed CMAS DIVE MASTER, BUT i have many obstacles. Waiting your response
I’m 13 and want to become a marine biologist who is like diving or finding new species it’s just because I love the ocean it feels like my home I swim a lot (I’m an regional swimming middle-sex region)and I’m good at science do you have any idea for what I should do
If the goal is to eventually study animal science/behavior, math isn't usually a HUGE portion of the career, except for statistics. Statistics are incredibly important for animal science and something you should definitely work hard to understand!
Hi I’m 14 and when I was at the beach I decided I want want to be a marine biologist So this video helped me a lot to decide what I want to be in marine biologie thank you ⁉️🥳😇✌️❤️🎀🙏🎊
